Combined injuries to the lower limbs.

Several patterns of severe lower limb injuries are presented. They all indicate high energy trauma and affect the immediate care of the patient. The improvement of evacuation systems and resuscitating methods in intensive care create many reconstruction challenges for the orthopaedic surgeon. Awareness of the different combinations which are presented can serve as a tool that may be helpful in these demanding injuries. Guidelines for management of combined injuries are essential to improve the outcome of these life-threatening situations.

The coordinated movement of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex during running: a literature review.

The purpose of this review article is to summarise the literature to date regarding the movement of the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips during running gait. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional studies are analysed to illustrate the apparent coordination in the angular kinematics of each of these segments during running. Knowledge of this coordination is essential in order to facilitate the successful rehabilitation of running injuries to the back, pelvis, hip and thigh.

The effect of Stop X exercises on balance, strength and range of motion of male adolescent football players with dynamic knee valgus.

Dynamic valgus of the lower limb is known as a risk factor associated with improper muscle function for many lower limb injuries, especially knee injuries. Stop X exercises has been designed to enhance spatial orientation, prediction, and attention; increase body stability and movement coordination; and teach the appropriate landing techniques. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Stop X exercises on the balance, strength and range of motion (ROM) of male adolescent football players with dynamic knee valgus (DKV). Thirty football players with DKV were select

Randomised trial of the effects of four weeks of daily stretch on extensibility of hamstring muscles in people with spinal cord injuries.

The aim of this assessor-blind randomised controlled trial was to determine the effect of four weeks of 30 minute stretches each weekday on extensibility of the hamstring muscles in people with recent spinal cord injuries. A consecutive sample of 16 spinal cord-injured patients with no or minimal voluntary motor power in the lower limbs and insufficient hamstring muscle extensibility to enable optimal long sitting were recruited. Subjects' legs were randomly allocated to experimental and control conditions. The hamstring muscles of the experimental leg of each subject were stretched with a 30

Influence of coincident distal radius fracture in patients with hip fracture: single-centre series and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hip and wrist fractures are the most common orthopaedic injuries. Combined hip and distal radius fractures are an important clinical and public health problem, since mobilisation and rehabilitation is challenging and likely to be prolonged in this setting. Few studies have explored the influence of an associated wrist fracture in patients with hip fracture. We present the largest series of patients with concomitant hip and wrist fractures. We perform the first meta-analysis of the literature on patients with concurrent hip and wrist fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this single-

The reliability and validity of a visual analog scale for rating the single leg squat test.

BACKGROUND: The single leg squat test (SLST) is commonly used for visual movement assessment in subjects with lower extremity injuries. While current methods utilize ordinal rating categorization, adopting a visual analog scale (VAS) may offer potential advantages. The study aims to determine the intra-rater, inter-rater reliability, and validity of a visual analog scale (VAS) for rating the single leg squat test (SLST) in subjects with lower extremity injuries. METHODS: 58 subjects with lower extremity injuries participated. Intra-rater reliability was assessed by a physical therapist at 1-w

Core stability measures as risk factors for lower extremity injury in athletes.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Decreased lumbo-pelvic (or core) stability has been suggested to contribute to the etiology of lower extremity injuries, particularly in females. This prospective study compares core stability measures between genders and between athletes who reported an injury during their season versus those who did not. Finally, we looked for one or a combination of these strength measures that could be used to identify athletes at risk for lower extremity injury. METHODS: Before their season, 80 female (mean age = 19.1 +/- 1.37 yr, mean weight 65.1 +/- 10.0 kg) and 60 male (mean age

Transfemoral bone-anchored limb use changes dynamic hip muscle forces during walking.

People with unilateral transfemoral amputation commonly experience pain at the residual limb-socket interface and heightened risk of musculoskeletal overuse injuries. Compensatory movement patterns acutely alleviate pain but can contribute to chronic aberrant muscle function and joint loading. Bone-anchored limbs have been shown to normalize joint loading during walking compared to socket prostheses, but their effects on muscle forces are not well understood. In this study, we compared dynamic hip muscle forces in all three planes of motion during walking before and after transfemoral bone-anc

Leg Joint Stiffness Affects Dynamics of Backward Falling From Standing Height: A Simulation Work.

Falling backward can lead to injuries including hip fracture, back injury, and traumatic brain impact among older adults. A loss of consciousness is associated with falling backward and accounts for about 13% of all falls among older adults. Little is known about the dynamics of backward falls, such as the falling duration, the impact severity, and how the fall dynamics are affected by the biomechanical properties of the lower limb joints, particularly the rotational stiffness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the stiffness of individual leg joints on the dynamics
