The effect of different angle kappa on higher-order aberrations after small incision lenticule extraction.

This study aimed to compare higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in patients with different angle kappa. This is a retrospective report in which 341 right eyes of 341 patients who were subjected to SMILE, which used coaxially sighted corneal light reflex (CSCLR) as the treatment zone centered, treated by the same experienced surgeon (LHB) for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism, preoperative and postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), angle kappa, total higher-order aberrations (total HOA), spherical aberration (SA), vertical coma (VC), hor

Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy to treat mild myopia.

PURPOSE: To assess the safety and effectiveness of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK) in patients with mild myopia using the Schwind Amaris 750 s Excimer laser system which take corneal epithelium variability in consideration during ablation. METHODS: A prospective case series study of patients with mild myopia with or without astigmatism (spherical equivalent ≤ -3 diopters), who underwent T-PRK as a single-step treatment, was carried out at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Riyadh between May 2017 and January 2018. The main outcomes included postoperative uncorrected dista

Comparison between aberration-free transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy and small incision lenticule extraction for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and aberration-free transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (AF t-PRK) in patients with low to moderate myopic astigmatism, including visual acuity, refractive outcomes, astigmatic vector analysis and corneal aberrometric changes. METHOD: This retrospective comparative case series study involved 110 right eyes of 110 patients who underwent either SMILE (55 eyes) or AF t-PRK (55 eyes). Visual acuity, manifest refractive error and corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were measured and analyzed at ba

Phototherapeutic keratectomy.

Phototherapeutic keratectomy is an excimer laser-based surgical procedure widely performed by corneal surgeons for treating anterior corneal stromal pathologies. Phototherapeutic keratectomy helps by ablating the corneal stroma, thereby improving corneal clarity and smoothening the surface. Transient discomfort and induced hyperopia from corneal flattening are the immediate postoperative concerns. The long-term course is often marked by the recurrence of original corneal pathology and corneal haze formation. Phototherapeutic keratectomy, however, allows for repeat stromal ablation for managing

Successful treatment with 308-nm monochromatic excimer light and subsequent tacrolimus 0.03% ointment in refractory plasma cell cheilitis.

Plasma cell cheilitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that presents with erythema, erosions, ulcers and occasional nodules within the mucosa, including the lips. It is histopathologically characterized by dense plasma cell infiltration in the lamina propria of the mucous membranes. Several treatments for plasma cell cheilitis have been reported, including topical steroids, topical antibiotics or topical tacrolimus. However, 308-nm monochromatic excimer light (MEL) has never been reported as a treatment option, while it was reported to be very effective in treating erosive oral lichen planus.

A review of corneal melting following kerato-refractive surgery.

Corneal melting is a rare complication that may occur following a number of different types of surgery. Keratolysis may lead to scarring, irregular astigmatism, photophobia and decreased vision. This article reviews the incidence, pathophysiology and treatment of this condition in kerato-refractive surgery.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia treatment options.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a rare dermatologic disease that causes scarring and hair loss and is increasing in prevalence worldwide. FFA patients typically present with hair loss in the frontal scalp region and eyebrows which may be associated with sensations of itching or burning. FFA is a clinically distinct variant of lichen planopilaris (LPP) that affects predominantly postmenopausal women, although men and premenopausal women may also be affected. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary to prevent definitive scarring and permanent hair loss. Data from retrospective stu

Effective spherical aberration of the cornea as a quantitative descriptor in corneal topography.

Following excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy and other refractive surgical procedures, complaints of halos, glare, and monocular diplopia are common. These procedures increase the asphericity of the cornea, which may cause the optical distortions. We used ray tracing techniques to estimate the longitudinal monochromatic aberration of the cornea from the measured corneal topography (effective spherical aberration) in 15 normal eyes with varying degrees of astigmatism and in ten eyes after photorefractive keratectomy. Best spherical corrected visual acuity in the astigmatic eyes was highl

DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, paired-eye, single-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive eligible patients were randomized to undergo SMILE and LASIK in either eye at a single tertiary referral eye center. METHODS: Patients were treated in each eye using the VisuMax (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) 500-kHz femtosecond laser system. Excimer ablation was subsequently performed using the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser (Alcon Laboratories, Inc,

Changes in posterior corneal elevation and associated factors following small incision lenticule extraction in patients with high myopia and thin cornea: a prospective randomized clinical study.

To investigate the safety and efficacy of SMILE in patients with high myopia and analyzed the factors influencing corneal posterior elevation variation (PCE). This was a prospective, comparative, randomized, clinical study. Patients with a corneal thickness < 530 μm at the thinnest point of the right eye with a spherical equivalent (SE) ≤-3.00D (group A: ≤-3.00D, >-6.00D; group B: ≤-6.00D, >-10.00D) who underwent SMILE surgery between January 1, 2020, and May 31, 2021 were randomly selected. We compared the difference in postoperative vertex PCE between the two groups and assessed the correlat

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyze myopic regression after corneal refractive surgery (CRS) in civilian pilots and to explore the factors that may cause long-term myopic regression. METHODS: We included civilian pilots who had undergone CRS to correct their myopia and who had at least 5 years of follow-up. We collected retrospective data and completed eye examinations and a questionnaire to assess their eye habits. RESULTS: A total of 236 eyes were evaluated in this study. 211 eyes had Intrastromal ablations (167 eyes had laser in situ keratomileusis, LASIK, 44 eyes had sma

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the possible topographic and surgical risk factors for high postoperative residual astigmatism in patients who undergo small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery and have different myopia degrees. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, and patients who underwent SMILE surgery were enrolled. A total of 80 and 150 eyes from 40 to 75 individuals, respectively, were selected as the low myopia and high myopia groups. The demographic data, visual acuity, refraction, topographic parameters and surgical settings were recorded. Multiple linear regression

The Impact of Corneal Epithelial Thickening and Inhomogeneity on Corneal Aberrations After Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.

PURPOSE: To investigate the corneal epithelial remodeling profile after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), the correlated explanatory variables, and its potential impact on corneal higher order aberrations (HOAs). METHODS: This single-center study prospectively evaluated 75 right eyes of 75 patients scheduled for SMILE. An anterior segment optical coherence tomography device was used to automatically obtain central 6-mm corneal epithelial thickness (ET), total corneal HOAs, and individual Zernike components before and after surgery. The ET inhomogeneity over the central 3- and 6-mm
