A combination of the K-L and S-P approaches for treating acetabular posterior wall factures accompanied by femoral head fractures with open reduction and internal fixation.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, acetabular posterior wall fracture combined with femoral head fracture is rare. However, with the increasing number of engineering and traffic accidents, such fractures, have increased significantly in recent years. This paper aims to explore the clinical efficiency of the Kocher-Langenbeck (K-L) and Smith-Petersen (S-P) combined approaches for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of acetabular posterior wall fractures accompanied by femoral head fractures (Pipkin type IV fractures). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 8 patients who underw

Treatment of Distal Radius Fractures in Women Older than 80 Years: A Preliminary Report of Functional and Radiographic Outcomes after Open Reduction and Internal Fixation.

Background  Distal radius fractures are one of the most common fractures seen in the elderly. The management of distal radius fractures in the elderly, especially patients older than 80 years, has not been well defined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate operative treatment of distal radius fractures in patients older than 80 years to determine functional outcomes and complication rates. Materials and Methods  A retrospective review was performed to identify patients 80 years or older who were treated for a distal radius fracture with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Medical

Number of screws in the articular segment of distal humerus AO/OTA C-type fractures treated with open reduction internal fixation is associated with complication rate.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of distal humerus fractures can lead to numerous complications. Data suggest that the number of screws in the distal (articular) segment may be associated with complication rate. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between a number of screws in the distal segment and complication rate for surgical treatment of distal humerus fractures. We hypothesize that the number of screws in the articular segment of distal humerus AO/OTA C-type fractures treated with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) will be inversely proportional to the complicat

S-Type Posterolateral Approach for Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Pronation External Rotation Ankle Fractures: Improved Visualisation of the Posterior Joint and the Lateral Malleolus.

Pronation external rotation (PER) fractures are unstable ankle fractures that require anatomically stable fixation. However, due to the long distance between the fibula and the posterior malleolus in PER IV, existing approaches may make it difficult for the fixation of the associated posterior joint and the lateral malleolus. We describe an S-type posterolateral approach for the open reduction and internal fixation of posterior malleolar fractures with an associated lateral malleolar fracture in PER IV.

Stress fractures of the medial malleolus in the professional soccer player demonstrate excellent outcomes when treated with open reduction internal fixation and arthroscopic spur debridement.

PURPOSE: Despite a debilitating effect on athletic performance and an incidence of up to 4% of all stress fractures, there have been only 31 documented cases of medial malleolus stress fractures (MMSF) to our knowledge in the literature. The largest series to date is presented in this study, of 16 professional soccer players undergoing uniform operative treatment. The authors attempt to justify their preferred treatment of MMSFs in the professional soccer player, with an emphasis on patient satisfaction, clinical and radiographic union, and return to high level sport. The authors aim to prove

Stable Fixation and Immediate Weight-Bearing After Combined Retrograde Intramedullary Nailing and Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Noncomminuted Distal Interprosthetic Femur Fractures.

With an aging population, treatment of interprosthetic femur fractures continues to pose a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. Retrograde intramedullary nailing combined with open reduction internal fixation using a tissue-preserving plating technique was used in our series of 9 patients with noncomminuted, distal femur fractures. No interfragmentary screws, cables, cerclage wires, or supplemental bone grafts of any type were used. Each patient initiated weight-bearing as tolerated after operative intervention. Every fracture healed at an average of 20 weeks (range 18-24 weeks). Use of a lat

Complications following open reduction and internal fixation versus external fixation in treating unstable distal radius fractures: Grading the evidence through a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The common fixation techniques for unstable distal radius fractures include open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plates and closed reduction and external fixation (EF). There is controversy over the choice of surgical approach in treating unstable distal radius fractures. HYPOTHESIS: This meta-analysis was performed to compare complication rates in patients treated with ORIF or EF for unstable distal radius fractures and to develop GRADE (grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation)-based recommendations for using the procedures to treat unstabl

How bone quality may influence intraoperative and early postoperative problems after angular stable open reduction-internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures.

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of the deltoid tuberosity index (DTI), a simple radiographic tool has become available to measure bone mineral density of the proximal humerus. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of local bone mineral density on the early failure rate after angular stable open reduction-internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures (PHFs). METHODS: We retrospectively followed up all patients treated with angular stable implants for PHFs from 2007 to 2014. The fractures were classified according to Neer, and the DTI, metaphyseal head extension (MHE), medial hi

Open reduction and fixation of displaced lateral clavicle fractures using the Minimally Invasive Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction (MINAR®) technique: a case series review.

BACKGROUND: Lateral end of clavicle fractures can be a challenge, with a 20% to 30% non-union rate if treated non-operatively. Several operative options exist, each having their own merits and some having potential disadvantages. The Minimally Invasive Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction (MINAR®) (Storz, Tutlingen, Germany) set uses an Orthocord (Depuy Synthes Mitek, Leeds, UK) suture and two Flip Tacks (Storz) via a transclavicular-coracoid approach to reconstruct the coracoclavicular ligaments. METHODS: Referrals were made to two senior surgeons at separate institutions regarding Robinso

Outcome after open reduction and angular stable internal fixation for supra-intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus: preliminary results with the LCP distal humerus system.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal humerus are complex injuries that can be effectively treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The new LCP distal humerus system allows angular stable fixation of these complex fractures with anatomically preshaped plates. The aim of the study was to evaluate operative reposition, fracture healing, and pain, function and patient satisfaction after open reduction with an angular stable fixation. METHODS: Fourteen patients with a mean age of 55.2 years (21-83) were treated with open reduction and angular stable internal fixation. Two patient

Complications and Mortality of Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures Around Cementless Femoral Stems: A Mid- to Long- Term Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: The optimal treatment strategy for periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) around cementless femoral stems remains controversial, particularly for fractures in which stem stability is difficult to determine preoperatively. While revision arthroplasty is often recommended for unstable stems, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) continues to be widely used in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate mid- to long-term clinical outcomes, complications, and mortality of ORIF for PFFs around cementless stems. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients who unde

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Versus Total Elbow Arthroplasty for Intra-articular Distal Humerus Fractures in Patients 65 Years or Older: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Distal humerus fractures (DHF) in the elderly pose a challenge due to osteoporotic bone, comminution, and potential for poor functional recovery. Surgical management typically involves open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). However, inconsistent findings across studies have led to uncertainty regarding which intervention optimizes outcomes, underscoring the need for a rigorous meta-analysis to guide clinical decision making. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for
