Pityriasis rotunda. A clinical study in Jordan: experience of 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rotunda is a rare skin disease characterized by the presence of multiple, round or oval, sharply demarcated hyperpigmented scaly patches. It has been described in Japan, South Africa, and in some other countries. The cause of pityriasis rotunda is usually idiopathic but may be associated with certain internal malignancy or systemic diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe this rare entity in Jordan in a retrospective study during the last 10 years. Jordan, as a Middle Eastern country, had no previous reports about this rare disease. In addition, the int…

Secukinumab emerges as a rapidly effective therapy for pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Refractory pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) often is treated off-label with the same biologic therapies that are approved for the treatment of psoriasis, most commonly tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α antagonists and ustekinumab; however, the IL-17A antagonist secukinumab also has shown efficacy in the treatment of PRP. We report 2 new cases of severe refractory PRP that responded rapidly to treatment with secukinumab.

MGL_3741 gene contributes to pathogenicity of Malassezia globosa in pityriasis versicolor.

Dihydroxyacid dehydratase (DHAD) is a key enzyme in biosynthetic pathway of isoleucine and valine. This pathway is absent in human but exists in various organisms such as fungi. Using RNA-seq analysis in this study, we identified MGL_3741gene which encodes DHAD protein in Malassezia globosa (M. globosa). Furthermore, we found that mentioned gene is homologous to the Ustilago maydis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus fumigatus ILV3P. For understanding the probable role of this gene in pathogenicity of M. globosa, we applied Real-time PCR to investigate the differenti

Ustekinumab as an alternative treatment option for chronic pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is an exceptionally rare, chronic inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology. Patients classically present with small, follicular keratosis and salmon-colored plaques that begin at the head and neck and slowly progress to widespread erythroderma including the palms and soles. It is difficult to distinguish PRP from other inflammatory dermatoses; however, features that help aid in the diagnosis include 'islands' of spared skin, orangish hue and typical findings on biopsy. There are no specific guidelines on therapy and treatment options include corticosteroids, v…

Pityriasis Lichenoides in Childhood: Review of Clinical Presentation and Treatment Options.

Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) is a skin condition of unclear etiology that occurs not uncommonly in childhood. It is often classified into the acute form, pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA), and the chronic form, pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC). We performed a comprehensive review of the English-language literature using the PubMed database of all cases of childhood PL reported from 1962 to 2014 and summarized the epidemiology, clinical features, treatment options, and prognosis of this condition in children. The proposed etiologies are discussed, including its associati…

Multiple recurrences in pityriasis rosea - a case report with review of the literature.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common benign cutaneous disorder of children and young adults. The etiology of this condition is still unknown. Despite the common occurrence, second episode of PR is noted only in 1-3% of the cases. Multiple recurrences (three or more episodes) are extremely uncommon and to the best of our knowledge, only few patients have been reported in the literature. Due to the benign nature of the disease, these recurrences may be either underestimated or unreported. Till date, there are no predisposing factors identified for the occurrence of these multiple episodes. We repor…

[Labor epidural analgesia for a woman with a pityriasis versicolor in the lumbar region].

Epidural analgesia is usually contraindicated in case of infection at the site of needle insertion. Tinea versicolor is a benign superficial cutaneous fungal infection caused by the proliferation of a skin commensal yeast of low pathogenicity. We report the case of a pregnant woman with a tinea versicolor in the lumbar region, who benefited from a labor epidural analgesia, realised with reinforced antiseptic measures. No neurological or infectious complication occurred.

Prevalence of different Malassezia species in pityriasis versicolor in central India.

BACKGROUND: In the last 10 years, different studies have shown interesting geographical variations in the prevalence of different Malassezia species in pityriasis versicolor. AIM: Identification of Malassezia species isolated from patients with pityriasis versicolor. METHODS: In 100 patients with pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia species were identified by culture in Sabouraud's dextrose agar containing cycloheximide with olive oil overlay and modified Dixon agar and by doing biochemical tests (catalase reaction, assimilation of glycine, and Tween utilisation tests). RESULTS: In 10 patients…

Penicillin and vitamin A as possible therapeutic agents in pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare skin disorder with versatile clinical presentations. A 62-year-old Caucasian woman with progressive erythroderma and classic adult (type I) PRP is presented. Treatment with systemic steroids and methotrexate produced no improvement. Clinical remission was achieved after systemic therapy with penicillin (both intravenous and intramuscular) and vitamin A. The therapy of PRP is reviewed, focusing on a possible infectious genesis of PRP as well as the role of antibiotics in its management.

Detection of human herpesvirus 8 in the skin of patients with pityriasis rosea.

Pityriasis rosea is an acute self-limiting dermatosis with clinical and epidemiological features that suggest viral involvement. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between pityriasis rosea and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8). Lesional skin tissue was obtained from 34 Kaposi's sarcoma-negative, immunocompetent patients with typical acute phase pityriasis rosea. Nested polymerase chain reaction with specific primer for HHV-8 DNA sequences was performed and all positive results were confirmed by sequencing. Seven out of 34 lesional skin specimens (20.5%) were found to be …
