Injectable self-healing alginate/PEG hydrogels cross-linked via thiol-Michael addition bonds for hemostasis and wound healing.

In this study, an alginate/PEG hydrogel was developed via a thiol-Michael addition reaction between oxidized quinone of catechols on dopamine-grafted sodium alginate (SA-DA) and sulfhydryl groups of 4-arm polyethylene glycol tetra-thiol (4-arm PEG-SH) under mildly basic conditions. Through the formation of thiol-terminated catechol groups, the accompanying oxidized catechols are reduced, significantly strengthening the internal network structure of the hydrogel and improving tissue adhesion. Meanwhile, the hydrogels have excellent self-healing properties due to the dynamic non-covalent bonds b

Injectable, stable, and biodegradable hydrogel with platelet-rich plasma induced by l-serine and sodium alginate for effective treatment of intrauterine adhesions.

The combination of pharmacological and physical barrier therapy is a highly promising strategy for treating intrauterine adhesions (IUAs), but there lacks a suitable scaffold that integrates good injectability, proper mechanical stability and degradability, excellent biocompatibility, and non-toxic, non-rejection therapeutic agents. To address this, a novel injectable, degradable hydrogel composed of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), sodium alginate (SA), and l-serine, and loaded with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) (referred to as PSL-PRP) is developed for treating IUAs. l-Serine induces r

Glycine/alginate-based piezoelectric film consisting of a single, monolithic β-glycine spherulite towards flexible and biodegradable force sensor.

Development of piezoelectric biomaterials with high piezoelectric performance, while possessing excellent flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability still remains a great challenge. Herein, a flexible, biocompatible and biodegradable piezoelectric β-glycine-alginate-glycerol (Gly-Alg-Glycerol) film with excellent in vitro and in vivo sensing performance was developed. Remarkably, a single, monolithic β-glycine spherulite, instead of more commonly observed multiple spherulites, was formed in alginate matrix, thereby resulting in outstanding piezoelectric property, including high piezoe

High Tensile, Antibacterial, and Conductive Hydrogel Sensor with Multiple Cross-Linked Networks Based on PVA/Sodium Alginate/Zinc Oxide.

Hydrogel sensors have attracted a lot of attention due to their great significance for biosensors and human detection, especially their antibacterial properties when in direct contact with the human body. However, it is challenging to improve mechanical and antibacterial performance simultaneously. In this study, by using ultrasonic dispersion technology to attach zinc oxide to cellulose and adding sodium alginate, a multiple cross-linking network is generated, which effectively solves this problem. The proposed poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate/zinc oxide/hydrogel sensor exhibits not only e

Degree of sulfation of freeze-dried calcium alginate sulfate scaffolds dramatically influence healing rate of full-thickness diabetic wounds.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic and non-healing wound in all age categories with a high prevalence and mortality in the world. An ideal wound dressing for DFU should possess the ability of adsorbing high contents of exudate and actively promote wound healing. Here, we introduced the calcium alginate sulfate as a new biomaterial appropriate for use in wound dressing to promote the healing of full-thickness ulcers in a diabetic mouse model. In this regard, alginate sulfate (Alg-S) solutions with different degrees of substitution (DS) of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.9 were synthesized, freeze-dried, cr

Tetramethylpyrazine-loaded liposomes surrounded by hydrogel based on sodium alginate and chitosan as a multifunctional drug delivery System for treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) has low bioavailability due to its fast metabolism and short half-life, which is not conducive to transdermal treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Therefore, in this study, TMP was encapsulated into liposomes (Lip) by film dispersion method, and then the surface of Lip was modified by sodium alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CS). The tetramethylpyrazine-loaded liposomes in sodium alginate chitosan hydrogel called T-Lip-AC hydrogel. In vitro experiments, we found that T-Lip-AC hydrogel not only had the antibacterial effect of CS, but also enhanced the anti-inflammatory and

Does Gold-Silver Core-Shell Nanostructure with Alginate Coating Induce Apoptosis in Human Lymphoblastic Tumoral (Jurkat) Cell Line?

BACKGROUND: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is known as an aggressive malignant disease resulting from the neoplastic alteration of T precursor cells. Although treatment with stringent chemotherapy regimens has achieved an 80% cure rate in children, it has been associated with lower success rates in adult treatment. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) have a toxic effect on human breast cancer cells, human glioblastoma U251 cells, and chronic myeloid leukemia cells in vitro. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ag nanostructures (Ag-NSs) on Jurkat cells' viability and apoptosis.

Cold plasma treatment with alginate oligosaccharide improves the digestive stability and bioavailability of nutrient-delivered particles: An in vitro INFOGEST gastrointestinal study.

To improve the stability and bioavailability of the delivered hydrophobic nutrients, the zein-based delivery system was modified by alginate oligosaccharide (AOS), cold plasma (CP) treatments, and synergistically. The digestive behavior of each was investigated in an INFOGEST static in vitro digestion model. The results showed that AOS and CP treatments and their synergistic effects improved the dispersion and stability of the delivery system, leading to a more concentrated particle size distribution and higher particle surface charge. Both CP treatments and AOS increased the release rate of C

Enhanced ileum function in weaned piglets via Laminaria digitata and alginate lyase dietary inclusion: A combined proteomics and metabolomics analysis.

Laminaria digitata, a brown seaweed with prebiotic properties, can potentially enhance the resilience of weaned piglets to nutritional distress. However, their cell wall polysaccharides elude digestion by monogastric animals' endogenous enzymes. In vitro studies suggest alginate lyase's ability to degrade such polysaccharides. This study aimed to assess the impact of a 10% dietary inclusion of L. digitata and alginate lyase supplementation on the ileum proteome and metabolome, adopting a hypothesis-generating approach. Findings indicated that control piglets escalated glucose usage as an enter

Strong infiltrative HHC36 antimicrobial peptide/silver nanoparticles-loaded carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate hydrogel for acne vulgaris therapy.

Acne is a common chronic skin inflammatory disease closely related toCutibacterium acnes(C. acnes), which affects the life quality of patients worldwide, especially adolescents and young adults. However, the physical barrier of the skin makes drugs difficult to infiltrate effectively into infected site, causing acne hard to cure and easy to recur. Herein, we developed an antibacterial skin dressing with strong infiltration of antibacterial agents which can co-delivery small-molecular antimicrobial agents through stratum corneum deeply into dermis, achieving high antimicrobial efficacy. The ant

Alginate hydrogels containing different concentrations of magnesium-containing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres for bone tissue engineering.

The easy loss of crosslinking ions in alginate can result in structural collapse and loss of its characteristics as a bone scaffold. A novel injectable tissue engineering scaffold containing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres and alginate was fabricated to improve alginate's physiochemical and biological properties. MgCO3and MgO were loaded at a 1:1 ratio into PLGA microspheres to form biodegradable PLGA microspheres containing magnesium (PMg). Subsequently, different concentrations of PMg were mixed into a Ca2+suspension and employed as crosslinking agents for an alginate hydro

Alginate-modified surfactants functionalized metal-organic framework-based fluorescent film sensors for detection and adsorption of volatile aldehydes in water.

Volatile aldehydes have an adverse impact on both human health and the environment, therefore, a fast, straightforward, highly accurate detection technique for the simultaneous detection and removal of several aldehydes is eagerly anticipated. Herein, novel APGF@ZIF-8 and APOF@ZIF-8 sensing materials were developed by coating fluorescent alginate-modified surfactants (APGF and APOF) into the ZIF-8 MOFs to produce quite porous fluorescent sensors (SBET up to 1519 m2/g). The detection capacity of the prepared sensors for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde has been examined. Th

Near-Infrared-Enhanced Dual Enzyme-Mimicking Ag-TiO2-x@Alginate Microspheres with Antibactericidal and Oxygeneration Abilities to Treat Periodontitis.

The effective treatment for periodontitis is to completely and sustainedly eradicate the bacterial pathogens from the complex periodontal pockets. Local sustained-release antibiotics as a complementary treatment after scaling and root planning can sustainedly combat bacterial pathogens in the periodontal pockets to help treat the disease, but the increasing concern of bacterial resistance limits its future use. Here, we reported a local antibacterial system based on microsized multifunctional Ag-TiO2-x encapsulated in alginate (ATA) microspheres. We confirmed that ATA displayed strong photothe

Active-intelligent and biodegradable sodium alginate films loaded with Clitoria ternatea anthocyanin-rich extract to preserve and monitor food freshness.

The aim of this study was to develop and characterize sodium alginate films loaded with 10-40 % Clitoria ternatea extract (CTE) and apply to monitoring the quality of milk, pork and shrimp. Films loaded with CTE showed high light barrier capacity and improved tensile strength by 3.8 times over control films. The incorporation of CTE in alginate films improved the thermal stability of the materials due to intermolecular interactions and crosslinking of polymeric networks. The addition of 40 % of CTE generated films with antibacterial action against E. coli. The alginate films showed biodegradab

An Oral Microencapsulated Vaccine Loaded by Sodium Alginate Effectively Enhances Protection Against GCRV Infection in Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella).

Grass carp reovirus (GCRV) is highly infectious and lethal to grass carp, causing huge economic losses to the aquaculture industry annually. Currently, vaccination is the most effective method against viral infections. Among the various vaccination methods, the oral vaccination is an ideal way in aquaculture. However, low protective efficiency is the major problem for oral vaccination owing to some reasons, such as antigen degradation and low immunogenicity. In our study, we screened the antigenic epitopes of GCRV-II and prepared an oral microencapsulated vaccine using sodium alginate (SA) as
