Crossmodal benefits to vocal emotion perception in cochlear implant users.

Speech comprehension counts as a benchmark outcome of cochlear implants (CIs)-disregarding the communicative importance of efficient integration of audiovisual (AV) socio-emotional information. We investigated effects of time-synchronized facial information on vocal emotion recognition (VER). In Experiment 1, 26 CI users and normal-hearing (NH) individuals classified emotions for auditory-only, AV congruent, or AV incongruent utterances. In Experiment 2, we compared crossmodal effects between groups with adaptive testing, calibrating auditory difficulty via voice morphs from emotional caricatu

Cochlear Implant in Patients with Intralabyrinthine Schwannoma without Tumor Removal.

(1) Background: Schwannomas of the vestibulocochlear nerve are benign, slow-growing tumors, arising from the Schwann cells. When they originate from neural elements within the vestibule or cochlea, they are defined as intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILSs). Cochlear implant (CI) has been reported as a feasible solution for hearing restoration in these patients. (2) Methods: Two patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) due to sudden sensorineural hearing loss and ipsilateral tinnitus were the cases. MRI detected an ILS. CI was positioned using a standard round window approach without tumor remov

A Spectrum of Intraoperative and Postoperative Complications of Cochlear Implants: A Critical Review.

A cochlear implant is a neuroprosthetic, electrical device that is developed for the treatment of patients who have sensory hearing loss. It directly stimulates the hearing nerve by bypassing the injured or damaged sensory receptors, the hair cells. This implant is directly placed in the inner ear. It is an electronic device which is proved to be very useful in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. This implant consists of a speech processor (externally present), which takes up the sound; transforms it into digital signals, and then internal components take it to convert it into electrical

Cochlear Implant in Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere Syndrome Patient.

The Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome or the riboflavin transporter deficiency syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder initially reported by Brown in 1894, by Vialetto in 1936, and by Van Laere in 1966. The syndrome has been described in more than 100 patients since then. Hearing loss is the most common symptom of the syndrome, as most individuals have it through the development of the disease. Although there is a variation between the onset of hearing loss and the other possible symptoms, hearing loss usually begins in early childhood. Nevertheless, there are some cases describing hearing lo

Development and Characterization of a Micromagnetic Alternative to Cochlear Implant Electrode Arrays.

To stimulate the auditory nerve, cochlear implants directly inject electrical current into surrounding tissue via an implanted electrode array. While many cochlear implant users achieve strong speech perception scores, there remains significant variability. Since cochlear implant electrode arrays are surrounded by a conductive fluid, perilymph, a spread of excitation occurs. The functionality of the cochlea is spatially dependent, and a wider area of excitation negatively affects the hearing of the user. Importantly, magnetic fields are unaffected by the material properties of biological compo

Stress in Parents of School-Age Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

Parents of children with cochlear implants (CIs) face unique challenges in caring for their child, potentially fostering parental stress. Most studies of stress in parents of CI users do not examine stress specific to having a deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) child. This study compares general and condition-specific stress (via the Family Stress Scale) in 31 parents of CI users (8-16 years) to previously published samples of DHH children, and it examines child- and CI-related factors associated with parental stress. Parents of modern-day CI users reported significantly lower stress than parents

[The value of genetic diagnosis of deafness in evaluating the prognosis of cochlear implantation].

Congenital deafness is known as the most common birth defect, and most sufferers from it manifest sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), with hereditary factors responsible for approximately 60% of the cases of deafness. At present, cochlear implantation (CI) is regarded as the most mature and effective solution to treating severe and extremely severe SNHL. However, the outcome of implantation varies due to different genetic factors. With whole genome sequencing advancing, more deafness mutant genes and their types have been identified, which is conducive to clarifying the efficacy of CI in the pa…

Calibrated Ling Sounds Test for Cochlear Implant fitting in children.

The Implanted children audiometric evaluation inaccuracies may lead to an extended period of the time to achieve proper cochlear implant (CI) electric stimulation. In this work we hypothesized that the relationship between implanted patient hearing thresholds estimation based on the Electrical Cochlear Response (ECR) and detection thresholds to Ling Sounds intensity calibrated according to higher energy spectral component allow electrical current stimulation adjustment of intracochlear electrodes. ECR is an objective test which is performed while patient is asleep and using the CI in everyday

Hearing and speech benefits of cochlear implantation in children: A review of the literature.

Cochlear implantation is a safe and reliable treatment for children with severe to profound hearing loss. The primary benefit of these medical devices in children is the acquisition of hearing, which promotes development of spoken language. The present paper reviews published literature demonstrating predictive effects of a number of factors on acquisition of hearing development and speech recognition. Of the many variables that contribute to an individual child's development after implantation, age at implantation, the presence of medical comorbidities, social determinants of health, and the …

Electrophysiological assessment of temporal envelope processing in cochlear implant users.

Cochlear-implant (CI) users rely on temporal envelope modulations (TEMs) to understand speech, and clinical outcomes depend on the accuracy with which these TEMs are encoded by the electrically-stimulated neural ensembles. Non-invasive EEG measures of this encoding could help clinicians identify and disable electrodes that evoke poor neural responses so as to improve CI outcomes. However, recording EEG during CI stimulation reveals huge stimulation artifacts that are up to orders of magnitude larger than the neural response. Here we used a custom-built EEG system having an exceptionally high s
