Early versus delayed weight-bearing after open reduction and internal fixation for vancouver type-B periprosthetic femoral fractures: A multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The timing of postoperative weight-bearing after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for periprosthetic femoral fractures (PPFs) is unclear. Although early weight-bearing is widely encouraged after many lower extremity fractures, its safety in PPFs remains uncertain. This study compared outcomes between early and delayed full weight-bearing after ORIF for Vancouver type B PPFs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 125 patients aged ≥60 years who underwent ORIF for Vancouver type B1-B3 PPFs at 18 affiliated hospitals between 2010 and 2022. We excluded those with follow-up <

Preoperative-to-Postoperative Radiological Outcomes Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation With Volar Locking Plate in Adult Distal Radius Fractures: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background and aim Distal radius fractures (DFRs) are among the most common orthopedic injuries, particularly in elderly and postmenopausal women due to osteoporosis and low-energy trauma, such as falls on an outstretched hand. Restoration of anatomical alignment is essential for optimal functional outcomes, as residual deformity can lead to stiffness, reduced grip strength, malunion, and early degenerative changes. With evolving treatment strategies, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using volar locking plates has become a preferred modality due to its biomechanical stability and fa

Effectiveness of intramedullary nailing vs. locked plating (open reduction and internal fixation) in adult displaced proximal humerus fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are becoming more common, especially among older adults, and often require surgical management. Two widely used surgical techniques are intramedullary nailing (IMN) and locking plate fixation (open reduction and internal fixation), yet there is ongoing debate regarding their comparative effectiveness. This study aims to systematically evaluate and compare functional, clinical, and complication-related outcomes of IMN and plating for adult patients with displaced PHFs. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with

Double Reverse Traction-Assisted Versus Traditional Freehand Closed Reduction With Hexapod External Fixator in Treating Open Tibial Shaft Fractures: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: Open tibial shaft fractures (OTSFs) pose significant therapeutic challenges due to high-energy trauma, extensive soft tissue damage, and contamination risks, complicating fracture stabilization and increasing infection rates. Conventional freehand closed reduction often requires multiple attempts, exacerbating soft tissue injury and radiation exposure. To address these limitations, this study evaluates a double reverse traction-assisted technique, hypothesizing that it could improve reduction accuracy and reduce complications in OTSFs managed with hexapod external fixators (HEFs).

Acute open reduction and internal fixation versus nonoperative treatment of scapular spine fractures after reverse shoulder arthroplasty: a propensity score-matched study.

BACKGROUND: Scapular spine fractures occur in 1%-11% of cases after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). While nonoperative management has been recommended, poor clinical outcomes have been reported for Levy type II-III fractures. The literature on surgical management mostly includes open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for established nonunions with mixed results. Currently, little evidence exists on acute ORIF of displaced scapular spine fractures after RSA. Therefore, the purpose of this propensity score (PS)-matched study was to compare acute ORIF (<6 weeks) with nonoperative manage

Arthroscopic fixation versus open reduction and internal fixation for displaced tibial side posterior cruciate ligament avulsion fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The reported incidence of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury ranges from 3 to 23 % of all knee injuries. Several injury patterns of the PCL have been described, including intra-substance, femoral detachment, and tibial avulsion, of which the last two are more common. Displaced PCL avulsion injury from the tibial side requires surgical fixation; however, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the optimal surgical approach for the fixation of these injuries. PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the outcomes and complications of arthroscop

Effectiveness of open reduction internal fixation versus revision arthroplasty around Vancouver type B2 periprosthetic femoral fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: When orthopedic surgeons encounter periprosthetic femoral fractures after hip arthroplasty, the task they face becomes challenging. Controversy continues to surround the fixation of Vancouver type B2 fractures in particular. The most discussed and successful method is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) versus femoral stem revision arthroplasty (RA). Therefore, this article discusses both methods in order to compare the indications for both approaches. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science (from January 1, 2006, to July 30, 20

Total Elbow Arthroplasty Versus Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Distal Humerus Fractures: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis of 30-Day Postoperative Complications.

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is an established surgical procedure for distal humeral fractures; however, total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) has become an increasingly popular alternative for elderly patients with these injuries. Using a large sample of recent patient data, this study compares the rates of short-term complications between ORIF and TEA and evaluates complication risk factors. METHODS: Patients who underwent primary TEA or ORIF from 2012 to 2021 were identified by Current Procedural Terminology codes in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical

Analysis of Effect of Melatonin on Postoperative Sensory Nerve Recovery Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Anterior Mandible Fractures: A Prospective Randomized Control Trial.

INTRODUCTION: HbA1c is a biochemical marker to evaluate hyperglycemia status in past 2-3 months. HbA1c ≥ 6.5% is diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus according to the American Diabetes Association. Recent studies suggest that anemia alters HbA1c levels, but results are conflicting. This study was planned to understand utility of HbA1c in relation to hemoglobin (Hb) for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and also to understand if HbA1c can be used as a screening modality for diagnosis of GDM in countries with higher anemia prevalence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observatio

Outcomes of distal femoral fractures treated with minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis versus open reduction internal fixation with combined locking plate and interfragmentary screws.

PURPOSE: Fractures of the distal femur remain challenging to treat, and numerous fixation methods are designed to promote stability and fracture healing. Locking plate constructs have recently become the mainstream fixation method, but debate exists on whether to use locking plates alone or to augment them with interfragmentary screws. This article compares outcomes of distal femur fractures treated with a single locking plate alone versus those treated with a locking plate and interfragmentary screws. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 57 patients treated for distal femur fractures from 20

Open reduction and internal fixation in a one-stage anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery for the treatment of tibial plateau fractures: A case report and literature review.

Treatment of tibial plateau fractures associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries can be challenging. Maintaining the joint surface and axis are two main principles for the management of patients with tibial plateau fractures. Herein, we describe a patient with tibial plateau fracture of Schatzker type VI associated with complete ACL rupture. Although in a two-stage reconstruction surgery for treatment of its rupture seem to be accepted by most orthopaedic surgeons in cases of ACL injuries, we treated our patient with ORIF in a one-stage ACL reconstruction surgery. Open reduction and internal fixation of humeral shaft fractures versus conservative treatment with a functional brace: a study protocol of a randomised controlled trial embedded in a cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures represent 1%-3% of all fractures and 20% of humeral fractures in adults. The treatment of these fractures is mainly conservative and operative treatment is usually reserved for specific circumstances. To date, no randomised controlled trial (RCT) has compared operative treatment of humeral shaft fractures with conservative treatment. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct an RCT to compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of surgical and conservative treatment of humeral shaft fractures. After providing informed consent, 80 patients from 18 years o

Axillary nerve lesions after open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures through an extended lateral deltoid-split approach: electrophysiological findings.

BACKGROUND: Axillary nerve injuries after shoulder surgery are rare. In most studies, the frequency of injury is usually determined using clinical examinations, but results from intraoperative neuromonitoring studies have revealed higher than expected rates. Few studies have investigated this topic. Our aim was to determine the frequency of axillary nerve lesions after open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures by using electrophysiological assessments and to provide a review of the relevant literature. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 76 consecutive p

Open reduction and internal fixation of osteoporotic acetabular fractures through the ilio-inguinal approach: use of buttress plates to control medial displacement of the quadrilateral surface.

The number of acetabular fractures in the geriatric population requiring open reduction and internal fixation is increasing. Fractures with medial or anterior displacement are the most frequent types, and via the ilio-inguinal approach buttress plates have proved helpful to maintain the quadrilateral surface or medial acetabular wall. Seven to ten hole 3.5 mm reconstruction plates may be used as buttress plates, placed underneath the usual pelvic brim plate. This retrospective study presents our results with this technique in 13 patients at a minimum follow-up of 12 months (average, 31 months)
