Eyes with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) have typical features in the morphology of the anterior segment of the eye. We carried out an investigation to ascertain whether there are also differences in the posterior segment. Using 15 degrees color stereo optic disc photographs, 55 eyes with chronic open-angle glaucoma and pseudoexfoliation and 398 eyes with primary chronic open-angle glaucoma without PEX were examined morphometrically. There were no significant differences in: (1) quantitative parameters, such as the size and form of the optic disc, optic cup, neuroretinal rim, peripapillary scleral ri

Optic nerve injury triggered retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death and optic nerve atrophy lead to visual loss. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are stromal cells, capable of proliferating and differentiating into different types of tissues. This aims of this study is to investigate the role of BMSCs transfected with angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) in optic nerve injury induced by hyperoxia in a neonatal mice model. Ang-1 overexpression vector was constructed and used to transfect BMSCs. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect Ang-1 expression in BMSCs

BACKGROUND: The stiffness of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is of interest in cases such as hallux rigidus and apropulsive gait. Subjective rating of joint mobility as 'hypermobile, normal, or stiff' is an unreliable method. Previous instruments for the assessment of first MTPJ stiffness can be too hard and uncomfortable for test subjects. Recently, a new device using a load cell and optical fiber with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors was developed to provide a comfortable means of clinical foot assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the test-retest reliability of this FBG-load

One of the diagnostic tool for clinical evaluation and disease diagnosis is a pulse waveform analysis. High fidelity radial artery pulse waveforms have been investigated in clinical research to compute central aortic pressure, which has been demonstrated to be predictive of cardiovascular diseases. The radial artery must be inspected from several angles in order to obtain the best pulse waveform for estimate and diagnosis. In this study, we present the design and experimental testing of an optical sensor based on Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). A 3D printed device along with the FBG is used to mea

OBJECTIVE: We used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to document the time course of retrograde neuronal degeneration following indirect optic nerve injury.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients diagnosed with unilateral indirect traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). Patients with total or near-total optic atrophy were included. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological examinations, including OCT imaging, within 1 day and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, and 48 weeks after trauma.
RESULTS: The mean thicknesses of the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and macular retin

The lamina cribrosa (LC) is believed to be the site of injury to retinal ganglion cell axons in glaucoma. The ability to visualise this structure has the potential to help increase our understanding of the disease and be useful in the early detection of glaucoma. While for many years the research on the LC was essentially dependent on histology and modelling, a number of recent advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) have dramatically improved the ability to visualise the LC, such that it is now possible to image the LC in vivo in humans and animals. In this review, we highlight recent

This article presents a corrosion resistant, maneuverable, and intrinsically safe fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based temperature optical sensor. Temperature monitoring is a critical activity for the oil and gas industry. It typically involves acquiring the desired parameters in a hazardous and corrosive environment. The use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was proposed as a means of simultaneously isolating the optical fiber from the corrosive environment and avoiding undesirable mechanical tensions on the FBGs. The presented sensor head is based on multiple FBGs inscribed in a lengthy single mo

We report a miniature, lightweight fiber-coupled confocal fluorescence microscope that incorporates an electrowetting variable focus lens to provide axial scanning for full three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Lateral scanning is accomplished by coupling our device to a laser-scanning confocal microscope through a coherent imaging fiber-bundle. The optical components of the device are combined in a custom 3D-printed adapter with an assembled weight of <2 g that can be mounted onto the head of a mouse. Confocal sectioning provides an axial resolution of ∼12 μm and an axial scan range of ∼80 μm. T

Recently developed neuroimaging techniques such as diffusion tensor (DT) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, functional MR imaging (fMRI), and MR spectroscopy can be used to evaluate the microstructural integrity of white-matter fibers and the functional activity of gray matter. They have been widely employed to investigate various diseases of the central nervous system, and they can be useful tools for assessing the integrity and functional connections of the visual pathways and areas that play key roles in glaucoma. In vivo degeneration of the optic nerves can be noninvasively demonstrated by D

A new complex method for treating partial atrophies of the optic nerve unites surgical, physiotherapeutic, and drug effects. One electrode is attached directly to the anterior segment of the optic nerve by a collagen infusion system and the other is fixed at the back of the neck. The involved optic nerve is exposed to sinusoidal modulated currents in the rectified mode, permitting direct drug electrophoresis in parallel with electric stimulation of nerve fibers. The efficiency of the method is two times higher than of standard treatment.

Escalation is a propagated wave phenomenon readily observable in chick skeletal muscle fibers growing in culture. It occurs in fibers bathed in methylxanthines, halothane, or quinine, at concentrations associated with twitch potentiation. From the results of a variety of experiments, an explanation of the phenomenon is proposed. Cation requirements suggest that a wave may be initiated in conjunction with a spontaneous calcium influx or calcium spike; and drug concentration, temperature, and extracellular potassium effects support the theory that wave propagation occurs by calcium-induced calci

The juxtapapillary diameters of the superior temporal and inferior temporal retinal artery and vein have been shown to be significantly smaller in glaucomatous eyes than in normal eyes. They had been measured in 473 eyes of 281 patients with chronic primary open-angle glaucoma and in 275 eyes of 173 normal subjects. In the current study the vessel diameters were correlated with intra- and parapapillary morphometric data and visual field indices. Only one eye per patient and subject was taken for statistical analysis. The retinal vessel calibers were significantly (P less than 0.001) correlated

A 30-year-old man had an acute onset of orthostatic lightheadedness, sweating disturbance, paroxysmal cough and loss of potency. These symptoms reached the peak in two weeks, and then remitted very slowly. He was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation when he was 39 years old. Neurological examinations revealed right Horner's syndrome, dry skin and impotence, but neither motor nor sensory system was impaired. No abnormalities were found on routine examinations of the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, motor and sensory nerve velocities, computed tomography and electroencephalography. On s

Spectral emission/absorption-based sensors are commonly used to monitor explosives, narcotics, and other restricted materials in high-security zones such as airports. Monitoring a broad range of spectral wavelengths with high spectral resolution would increase the repertoire of chemicals that can be monitored. However, a portable unit will have limitations in meeting these requirements. Optical fibers can be employed for collecting and transmitting spectral signals from portable sensor heads (PSHs) to a sensitive central spectral analyzer. However, simultaneous detection by sensors in multiple…

Axial myopia is characterized by a panoply of morphological, clinical and histological, features in association with longer axial length. It includes changes in the region peripheral to the optic nerve head (reduction in the density of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and retinal thinning); in the optic nerve head region in moderately myopic eyes (shift of Bruch's membrane (BM) opening typically in the temporal/inferior direction, leading to a secondary BM overhang into the nasal intrapapillary compartment, BM absence in the temporal parapapillary region ("gamma zone")

Fluorescence-based biomedical diagnostics such as cancers and advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) face important challenges, primarily the weak fluorescence emission and optical attenuation in highly scattering and absorbing biological tissues. We aim to develop an attachable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lens for an optical fiber probe that can detect low-intensity collagen-linked fluorescence (CLF) due to the AGE formation, despite high melanin concentration, and provide a non-invasive AGE detection system irrespective of skin color. We employed a Y-shaped multimode fiber-optic (MMFO) probe-

Image guidance plays a central role in minimally invasive fetal surgery such as photocoagulation of inter-twin placental anastomosing vessels to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Fetoscopic guidance provides insufficient sensitivity for imaging the vasculature that lies beneath the fetal placental surface due to strong light scattering in biological tissues. Incomplete photocoagulation of anastamoses is associated with postoperative complications and higher perinatal mortality. In this study, we investigated the use of multi-spectral photoacoustic (PA) imaging for better visualiz
