Bacterial nutritional approach to mechanisms of oxygen toxicity.

Gottlieb, Sheldon F. (Union Carbide Corp., Tonawanda, N.Y.). Bacterial nutritional approach to mechanisms of oxygen toxicity. J. Bacteriol. 92:1021-1027. 1966.-Inhibition by oxygen of growth of the bacterium Achromobacter P6 was reversed by amino acid supplements. The reversal of oxygen-induced growth inhibition was not due to the presence of reducing substances in the growth medium. Oxygen primarily exerts a bacteriostatic effect. The oxygen inhibition of growth occurred over a wide pH range. Oxygen inhibition of growth was observed when 1-amino-2-propanol, acetate, lactate, citrate, or gluco

Utility of peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2)/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) ratio and arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2)/FiO2 ratio in the diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome: A comparative study.

Our study determined the reliability of using the ratio of peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) rather than the ratio of arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2) and FiO2 for diagnosing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Pulse oximetry and arterial blood gas analysis were performed to obtain both ratios, respectively, in 70 patients who fulfilled the Berlin definition criteria of ARDS. A detailed history, clinical examination, and relevant evaluation were done. There was a significant correlation between the two ratios. The former had a l

Alpha-Oxygenation of Ketones Using TEMPO Disproportionation.

The alpha-oxygenation of ketones via acid-driven TEMPO disproportionation is reported. This straightforward and robust protocol from simple starting materials exhibits an excellent substrate scope in terms of scaffold substitutions, selectivity, and functional group tolerance, with substrate limitations elucidated and highlighted. Furthermore, the mechanism was probed by way of UV-visible spectroscopy, deuterium scrambling experiments, kinetic isotope effect, and Hammett analysis to illustrate the reaction dynamics.

Fallen-leaf-sensitized biosolar oxygenation of hydrocarbons.

Lignocellulosic wastes are naturally abundant carbon resources but have been underutilized due to their complex structure and recalcitrant nature. They require energy- and water-intensive processes, such as thermal, chemical, and/or mechanical pretreatments, for their valorization. Here, we report a new function of raw tree waste for driving the solar-powered oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and biocatalytic oxyfunctionalization of hydrocarbons. We reveal that various lignocellulosic wastes, such as fallen leaves, waste wood, and wastepaper, can produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using only O2, w

Does gut oxygenation drive colorectal cancer?

In a recent issue of Cell, Spiga et al.1 show that enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis constructs a low-oxygen intestinal niche to fuel pathogen growth through aerobic respiration, promoting tumorigenesis and challenging the view that oxygen is strictly detrimental to obligate anaerobes.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Ethics: A Call for Action.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a relatively novel, intensive medical intervention. It is known to raise important yet unsettled ethical concerns. OVERVIEW: We established the ECMO Ethics Workgroup in 2021 to improve our understanding of these ethical issues and their possible resolutions. This paper explains the methods used to produce our insights and recommendations, which additional papers from the project elaborate on in detail. Initially, over 6 months, the 37 group members described the full range of ethical issues in ECMO care they were familiar with fr

Imaging interface-controlled bulk oxygen spillover.

As one dynamic aspect of catalysis, spillover is known as species diffusion between an active metal and its support1-3, especially in reactions involving hydrogen and oxygen4-8. Spillover confined on the catalyst surface has been investigated extensively9,10; however, it remains unclear whether the bulk catalyst participates in the reactions through non-surface spillover. Here we track the oxygen spillover in Ru/TiO2 catalysts using in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy. Lattice oxygen was found to transport directly from the TiO2 substrate to the supported Ru particles throug

Nonprecious bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen electrode reactions.

The two most crucial reactions in energy storage and conversion systems are oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their sluggish kinetics arise the need for commercially feasible bifunctional electrocatalysts to assist the reaction by improving its kinetics at the same time ensuring durability and also taking cost into account. The fundamentals of the oxygen electrodes are discussed followed by various techniques adopted by researchers to tune the electronic structures of carbon- and transition metal-based nanostructures towards enhanced activity in ORR/

Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers with antioxidant properties.

Hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) are being investigated as therapeutics for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock, when red blood cells (RBCs) are unavailable. Researchers have investigated different techniques to impart antioxidant properties to HBOCs, in order to mitigate oxidative damage observed after hemorrhagic shock resuscitation. In our previous work, we have investigated the coating of Hb with polydopamine (PDA) and have shown that PDA-coated Hb exhibits antioxidant properties while retaining its oxygen transport properties. Since the PDA coating is biodegradable and cell-fr

Condensation in a Membrane Oxygenator Analyzed by Bronchoscopy and Ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mechanism of condensation-related oxygenator dysfunction (CROD) and explore preventive strategies, we directly visualized the interior of a membrane oxygenator using bronchoscopy and ultrasonography and evaluated the effect of external warming. METHODS: The CROD model consisted of a circuit incorporating a membrane oxygenator perfused with water at 3 L/min and supplied with gas (50% O2 in air) at 2 L/min. The hollow fiber bundle was observed bronchoscopically at the outlet surface and ultrasonographically from the lateral aspect. The percentage droplet area was qua

Proton Relaying in Carbenium-Based Oxygen Reduction.

The catalytic reduction of oxygen is at the heart of many energy-related and biological processes. Traditionally mediated by transition metals, metal-free systems have emerged as a powerful alternative. In this study, we describe newly prepared quinoline-carbenium species as catalysts for the two-electron reduction of oxygen and show that the quinoline nitrogen atom, depending on its position, can act as a proton relay, thereby boosting the H2O2 production rate. Kinetic studies, H/D kinetic isotope effect measurements, and cyclic voltammetric investigations support a mechanism that involves in

Oxygen-releasing biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration.

Bone defects often exceed the body's innate self-healing capacity, inevitably disrupting local vascular networks and establishing a severe hypoxic microenvironment. This pathological hypoxia compromises cell survival, suppresses osteogenic differentiation, and ultimately dictates regenerative failure, representing a critical bottleneck in bone tissue engineering. Oxygen-releasing biomaterials (ORBs) have emerged as a transformative strategy to reprogram this hostile microenvironment into an oxygenous and pro-osteogenic niche. To advance this rapidly evolving field, this review provides a compr
