Visual evoked potentials in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy complicated by ocular hypertension and suspect glaucoma or dysthyroid optic neuropathy.

The study compared visual evoked potentials of patients with uncomplicated Graves' ophthalmopathy, patients with ophthalmopathy and elevated intraocular pressure or suspect glaucoma, and patients with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical potential for the visual evoked potentials (VEP) in the differential diagnosis among the groups. The VEPs were obtained from 43 subjects with endocrine ophthalmopathy. Group I included patients with uncomplicated ophthalmopathy (30 eyes); group II included patients with ophthalmopathy, intraocular pressure > o

Dorsal and ventral stream sensitivity in normal development and hemiplegia.

Form and motion coherence thresholds can provide comparable measures of global visual processing in the ventral and dorsal streams respectively. Normal development of thresholds was tested in 360 normally developing children aged 4-11 and in normal adults. The two tasks showed similar developmental trends, with some greater variability and a slight delay in motion coherence compared to form coherence performance, in reaching adult levels. To examine the proposal of dorsal stream vulnerability related to specific developmental disorders, we compared 24 children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy wi

Comparative studies on pattern VECP between patients with ischemic optic neuropathy and optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether and how VECPs are useful in differentiating ION from ON. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 27 patients with non-arteritic ION and 69 patients with ON using pattern visually evoked cortical potentials (PVECPs) to 3 rev/sec stimulation (transient) and 12 rev/sec stimulation (steady-state). RESULTS: In patients with ION, non-recordable responses were found in 25% of those with transient VECP and in 74% of those with steady-state VECP. In ON patients, non-recordable responses were found in 34% of those with transient VECP and in 64% of those with steady-state VECP.

Retinotopic organization in human visual cortex and the spatial precision of functional MRI.

A method of using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure retinotopic organization within human cortex is described. The method is based on a visual stimulus that creates a traveling wave of neural activity within retinotopically organized visual areas. We measured the fMRI signal caused by this stimulus in visual cortex and represented the results on images of the flattened cortical sheet. We used the method to locate visual areas and to evaluate the spatial precision of fMRI. Specifically, we: (i) identified the borders between several retinotopically organized visual areas i

Dissociation of damage to spatial and luminance channels in early Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy manifested by the visual evoked potential.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited disorder characterised by the acute or subacute loss of central vision, leading to severe optic atrophy. The occurrence of a demyelinating disease such as multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported mainly in females with the mitochondrial DNA 11778 mutation. They had a poor visual outcome. To investigate the damage to the optic nerve in an early stage of LHON as compared with optic neuritis (ON), including MS, we examined patients by testing their pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) and flash VEP (FVEP). The mean amplitude

Perimetric motion thresholds are elevated in glaucoma suspects and glaucoma patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a clinically feasible perimetric motion test utilizing random-dot kinematograms could identify glaucomatous visual field defects. Using a staircase procedure, an automated perimetric motion test and a larger foveally presented target were given to normal (n = 30), glaucoma suspects (n = 31) and primary open-angle glaucoma patients (n = 19). Motion thresholds at specific locations throughout the whole visual field were significantly elevated in glaucoma patients (P < or = 0.001). Perimetric motion testing identified 84.2% of the primary open-angle g

The dynamic contribution of the high-level visual cortex to imagery and perception.

Mental imagery and visual perception rely on the same content-dependent brain areas in the high-level visual cortex (HVC). However, little is known about dynamic mechanisms in these areas during imagery and perception. Here we disentangled local and inter-regional dynamic mechanisms underlying imagery and perception in the HVC and the hippocampus (HC), a key region for memory retrieval during imagery. Nineteen healthy participants watched or imagined a familiar scene or face during fMRI acquisition. The neural code for familiar landmarks and faces was distributed across the HVC and the HC, alt

Simultanagnosia: when a rose is not red.

Abstract Information regarding object identity ("what") and spatial location ("where/how to") is largely segregated in visual processing. Under most circumstances, however, object identity and location are linked. We report data from a simultanagnosic patient (K.E.) with bilateral posterior parietal infarcts who was unable to "see" more than one object in an array despite relatively preserved object processing and normal preattentive processing. K.E. also demonstrated a finding that has not, to our knowledge, been reported: He was unable to report more than one attribute of a single object. Fo

Gender differences in hemispheric asymmetry for face processing.

BACKGROUND: Current cognitive neuroscience models predict a right-hemispheric dominance for face processing in humans. However, neuroimaging and electromagnetic data in the literature provide conflicting evidence of a right-sided brain asymmetry for decoding the structural properties of faces. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether this inconsistency might be due to gender differences in hemispheric asymmetry. RESULTS: In this study, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 40 healthy, strictly right-handed individuals (20 women and 20 men) while they observed infa

Perceptual asymmetry for chimeric stimuli in children with early unilateral brain damage.

The present study used a chimeric stimuli task to assess the magnitude of the left-hemispace bias in children with congenital unilateral brain damage (n = 46) as compared to typically developing matched controls (n = 46). As would be expected, controls exhibited a significant left-hemispace bias. In the presence of left hemisphere (LH) damage, the left-hemispace preference was found to be present, but attenuated, whereas right hemisphere (RH) damage resulted in a less lateralized process. Examination of lesion severity revealed that large lesions in the RH were associated with a reversal of th

Color-semantic congruency boosts distractor resistance in visual working memory: an alpha-band oscillation perspective.

Successful memory performance requires maintaining target representations while resisting distractor interference. Although prior event-related potential (ERP) studies linked cognitive resources to distractor resistance by controlling stimulus similarity, how other visual representational properties modulate this resistance remain unclear. Here, we employed ERPs to investigate visual working memory resistance mechanisms during maintenance by manipulating color-semantic congruency, with focus on alpha-band suppression. Distractor presentation elicited enhanced N2 amplitudes and alpha desynchron

Visual working memory is impaired in Alzheimer's disease: evidence from real-world objects and perceptual organization.

The mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain poorly understood. Visual working memory (VWM) is a core cognitive function, and its impairment has been linked to the progression has been identified as a reliable predictor of progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD. Both VWM encoding and maintenance can be enhanced by prior knowledge, i.e., top-down modulation, and by perceptual processing, which operates in a bottom-up manner. Using real-world objects and Kanizsa figures, the present study investigated how top-down and bottom-up processes influence V

Visual imagery deficits in posterior cortical atrophy.

Visual imagery has a close overlapping relationship with visual perception. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome marked by early impairments in visuospatial processing and visual object recognition. We asked whether PCA would therefore also be marked by deficits in visual imagery, tested using objective forced-choice questionnaires, and whether imagery deficits would be selective for certain properties. We recruited four patients with PCA and a patient with integrative visual agnosia due to bilateral occipitotemporal strokes for comparison. We administered a test ba

Facilitated Event-Related Power Modulations during Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) Revealed by Concurrent tACS-MEG.

Non-invasive approaches to modulate oscillatory activity in the brain are increasingly popular in the scientific community. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been shown to modulate neural oscillations in a frequency-specific manner. However, due to a massive stimulation artifact at the targeted frequency, little is known about effects of tACS during stimulation. It remains unclear how the continuous application of tACS affects event-related oscillations during cognitive tasks. Depending on whether tACS influences pre- or post-stimulus oscillations, or both, the endogenous

Edge-Related Activity Is Not Necessary to Explain Orientation Decoding in Human Visual Cortex.

UNLABELLED: Multivariate pattern analysis is a powerful technique; however, a significant theoretical limitation in neuroscience is the ambiguity in interpreting the source of decodable information used by classifiers. This is exemplified by the continued controversy over the source of orientation decoding from fMRI responses in human V1. Recently Carlson (2014) identified a potential source of decodable information by modeling voxel responses based on the Hubel and Wiesel (1972) ice-cube model of visual cortex. The model revealed that activity associated with the edges of gratings covaries wi

Category search speeds up face-selective fMRI responses in a non-hierarchical cortical face network.

The human brain is extremely efficient at detecting faces in complex visual scenes, but the spatio-temporal dynamics of this remarkable ability, and how it is influenced by category-search, remain largely unknown. In the present study, human subjects were shown gradually-emerging images of faces or cars in visual scenes, while neural activity was recorded using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Category search was manipulated by the instruction to indicate the presence of either a face or a car, in different blocks, as soon as an exemplar of the target category was detected in the

Adaptation of the human visual system to the statistics of letters and line configurations.

By adulthood, literate humans have been exposed to millions of visual scenes and pages of text. Does the human visual system become attuned to the statistics of its inputs? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined whether the brain responses to line configurations are proportional to their natural-scene frequency. To further distinguish prior cortical competence from adaptation induced by learning to read, we manipulated whether the selected configurations formed letters and whether they were presented on the horizontal meridian, the familiar location where words usually appear

Memory, visual discrimination performance, and the human hippocampus.

We evaluated recent proposals that the hippocampus supports certain kinds of visual discrimination performance, for example, when spatial processing is required and the stimuli have a high degree of feature overlap. Patients with circumscribed hippocampal lesions tried to discriminate between images of similar faces or images of similar scenes. In one condition, elements of the stimulus display repeated from trial to trial, and in another condition every trial was unique. In the repeated condition for both faces and scenes, controls gradually improved their performance across testing. In the t

Modeling eye movements in visual agnosia with a saliency map approach: bottom-up guidance or top-down strategy?

Two recent papers (Foulsham, Barton, Kingstone, Dewhurst, & Underwood, 2009; Mannan, Kennard, & Husain, 2009) report that neuropsychological patients with a profound object recognition problem (visual agnosic subjects) show differences from healthy observers in the way their eye movements are controlled when looking at images. The interpretation of these papers is that eye movements can be modeled as the selection of points on a saliency map, and that agnosic subjects show an increased reliance on visual saliency, i.e., brightness and contrast in low-level stimulus features. Here we review thi

Poor reading skills may involve a failure to focus attention.

A source localization analysis was carried out to provide brain functional and structural assessments of individuals with poor reading skills. Standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography was used to locate sources of P2 and P3 event-related potential components in normal readers and in poor reader children performing a cued continuous performance task. Cue-elicited P2 sources in the right superior parietal gyrus were smaller in 37 poor readers than in 40 normal readers. Poor readers showed a higher P3 activation in response to a false target in frontal and frontorbital regions
