alpha2 adrenoceptors are involved in the regulation of the gripping-induced immobility episodes in taiep rats.

In 1989 Holmgren et al. (Holmgren et al. 1989 Lab Anim Sci 39:226-228) described a new mutant rat that developed a progressive motor disturb … evelop immobility episodes (IEs) characterized by a cortical desynchronization, associated with the theta rhythm in the hippocampus and changes of the nucal electromyogram (EMG), whose pattern is like rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. These rats also show an altered sleep pattern with an equal REM sleep distribution. This study analyzed therole of alpha(2) adren …

Melatonin treatment of winter depression following total sleep deprivation: waking EEG and mood correlates.

Patients with winter depression (seasonal affective disorder (SAD)) commonly complain of sleepiness. Sleepiness can be objectively measured by spectral analysis of the waking electroencephalogram (EEG) in the 1-10 Hz band. The waking EEG was measured every 3 h in 16 female SAD patients and 13 age-matched control women throughout a total sleep deprivation of 30 h. Melatonin (or placebo) under double-blind conditions was administered subsequently (0.5 mg at 1700 h for 6 days), appropriately timed to phase advance circadian rhythms, followed by reassessment in the laboratory for 12 h. The increas

EEG reactivity correlates with neuropsychological test scores in Down's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down's syndrome patients express a neurodegenerative disorder and mental retardation. We studied the reactivity of EEG and its correlation with neuropsychological test score in Down's syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 32 patients with Down's syndrome and 31 controls for blocking of occipital EEG activity. The temporo-occipital EEG with eyes open (EO) was compared with resting EEG with eyes closed (EC), (EC/EO ratio). RESULTS: Both Down patients and controls showed significant diminution of alpha, beta and theta activity and decrease of EEG frequency with EO. However, t

Avoiding the pitfalls of EEG interpretation in childhood epilepsy.

The accurate interpretation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) of infants and children being evaluated for suspected epilepsy is based on the appreciation of normal and expected age-dependent characteristics, an awareness of the significance of both epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and the correlation of epileptiform abnormalities with clinical findings. Avoiding the pitfalls of pediatric EEG interpretation include the recognition of such normal EEG features in wakefulness as posterior slow waves of youth, mu rhythm, and lambda waves. In addition, the understanding of age-dependent c

Stress and sleep: Novel insights into stress-related sleep disorders from EEG features to neural circuitry.

Sleep disorders and stress-related psychiatric conditions exhibit a high degree of comorbidity. Epidemiological patterns suggest that sleep … (EEG) features including sleep spindles and slow-wave activity as well as rapid eye movement (REM) theta rhythms. We integrate findings from human and animal studies to elucidate how acute and chronic stress differentially remodel these oscillatory patterns. The analysis extends to the underlying neural circuitry. It explores how dysregulation in stress-respo …

Effects of visual stimulation on local field potentials in the midbrain medial longitudinal fasciculus nucleus of Cyprinus carpio.

A bio-robot is a hybrid system wherein human-implemented intervention signals delivered through dedicated control techniques modulate the behaviour of a host living organism. Delivering targeted stimulation to specific brain regions of an organism can induce virtual sensory perceptions analogous to those evoked by natural stimuli, thereby eliciting targeted motor behaviours. This strategy constitutes a pivotal control mechanism for bio-robots. Observations of locomotor behaviour in fish following local brain ablation revealed that neurons in the Nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (N

Comparative Electrocorticographic Signatures of S‑Ketamine and Racemic Ketamine in the Rat Visual Cortex Across Temporal Phases.

Ketamine enantiomers differ neurophysiologically, yet their specific influence on sensory cortical oscillations remains unclear. Characterizing the electrophysiological signatures of S-ketamine (KS) versus racemic ketamine (KSR) in the visual cortexa region highly sensitive to NMDA blockadecan improve understanding of enantiomer-specific neural modulation and anesthetic depth. This study compared the temporal dynamics of cortical oscillations induced by KS and KSR in rat visual cortices during dissociative anesthesia. Adult Wistar rats received KS (50 mg/kg), KSR (50 mg/kg), or saline. Visua

Exploring altered oscillatory activity in the anterior cingulate cortex after nerve injury: Insights into mechanisms of neuropathic allodynia.

While neural oscillations play a critical role in sensory perception, it remains unclear how these rhythms function under conditions of neuropathic allodynia. Recent studies demonstrated that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is associated with the affective-aversive component of pain, and plasticity changes in this region are closely linked to abnormal allodynic sensations. Here, to study the mechanisms of allodynia, we recorded local field potentials (LFPs) in the bilateral ACC of awake-behaving rats and compared the spectral power and center frequency of brain oscillations between healthy

Abnormalities of resting-state EEG in patients with prodromal and overt dementia with Lewy bodies: Relation to clinical symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Here we tested if cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms may differ in sub-groups of patients with prodromal and overt dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) as a function of relevant clinical symptoms. METHODS: We extracted clinical, demographic and rsEEG datasets in matched DLB patients (N = 60) and control Alzheimer's disease (AD, N = 60) and healthy elderly (Nold, N = 60) seniors from our international database. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources. RESULTS: As compared to the Nold group, the DLB and AD groups generally e

Impact of levetiracetam add-on therapy on different EEG occipital frequencies in epileptic patients.

UNLABELLED: The EEG background activity reflects the functional state of the brain. The established sensitivity of EEG to drug intoxication and in particular to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) made that EEG has become useful as an objective measure for monitoring chronic AED therapy and in investigation of cognitive functions. Therapy with classical AEDs has become associated with slowing of EEG background rhythm and the EEG changes correlated to changes on cognitive measures. So far, it has not been tested whether the relatively new AED, levetiracetam (LEV) has a detrimental effect on the EEG back

Randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled pilot trial of theta-band transcranial alternating current stimulation during cognitive training in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive deficits are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and effective treatments remain elusive. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), a non-invasive technique, has shown potential in improving cognitive function across various populations, but further research is needed to investigate its efficacy in AD. In a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled pilot trial, 36 mild AD patients received active or sham theta-tACS (8 Hz, 1.6 mA, 20-min daily) during n-back task for two weeks, followed by a 10-week follow-up. Cognitive assessments and resting-state EEG were analyzed at

Continuous theta-burst stimulation over the right DLPFC modulates central executive network connectivity in depression: exploratory analysis of a randomized clinical trial.

Previous studies suggest that transcranial magnetic stimulation exerts antidepressant effects and is associated with alterations in functional connectivity (FC), but the neural correlates remain unclear. This exploratory sham-controlled trial investigated the effect of continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on FC in major depressive disorder (MDD). Seventy MDD patients were randomized to receive two-week treatment of personalized cTBS or sham stimulation. Resting-state fMRI was performed at baseline and post-treatment. Ultimately, 31 pat

Non-inferiority of intermittent theta burst stimulation over the left V1 vs. classical target for depression: A randomized, double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the visual cortex (VC) has shown antidepressant effects for major depressive disorder (MDD) in sham-controlled trials, but comparisons with rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) are lacking. We aimed to determine the non-inferiority of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) over VC vs DLPFC for MDD. METHODS: Participants randomly received navigated iTBS over the left V1 or the left DLPFC twice daily for 14 days with a 3-month follow-up. The primary outcome was change in Hamilton Depression

Prolonged continuous theta burst stimulation increases motor corticospinal excitability and intracortical inhibition in patients with neuropathic pain: An exploratory, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: A new paradigm for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), referred to as prolonged continuous theta burst stimulation (pcTBS), has recently received attention in the literature because of its advantages over high frequency repetitive TMS (HF-rTMS). Clinical advantages include less time per intervention session and the effects appear to be more robust and reproducible than HF-rTMS to modulate cortical excitability. HF-rTMS targeted at the primary motor cortex (M1) has demonstrated analgesic effects in patients with neuropathic pain but their mechanisms of action are unclear and pc

Increased oscillatory theta activation evoked by violent digital game events.

The authors examined electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillatory responses to two violent events, the player character wounding and killing an opponent character with a gun, in the digital game James Bond 007: NightFire. EEG was recorded from 25 (16 male) right-handed healthy young adults. EEG data were segmented into one 1-s baseline epoch before each event and two 1-s epochs after event onset. Power estimates (microV(2)) were derived with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) for each artefact free event. Both of the studied events evoked increased occipital theta (4-6Hz) responses as compared to t

Inter-brain synchrony during collaborative gaming: an investigation using theta-burst stimulation at the right temporal-parietal junction.

Although hyperscanning experiments have revealed robust inter-brain synchrony (IBS) during social interaction, the specific neural mechanisms through which IBS contributes to collaborative performance remain unclear. While prior studies have provided preliminary causal evidence linking IBS to collaboration, it is unknown whether IBS within specific social-cognitive regions, such as the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), plays a causal role. To address this, the current study employed theta-burst stimulation (TBS) to modulate cortical activity in the rTPJ-a key region of the mentalizing net
