Paper to Pixels: Enhancing Unilateral Neglect Assessment Using the New Computer Vision-Based Tool CANDO.

Background/Objectives: The main aim of this article is to introduce a novel tool that allows the automatic scoring of many of the subtests from the conventional subpart of the Behavioural Inattention Test (BIT) and its German adaptation, the Neglect Test (NET). BIT and NET are standard test batteries used in the diagnosis of neglect. Our article has two parts. First, we examine the shortcomings of manual scoring, and secondly, we introduce our computer vision tool and evaluate its diagnostic validity and efficacy. Methods: In Part 1, diagnostic consistency was examined across raters with varyi

Case Report: Optic neuritis as the initial presentation of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi infection, and typically manifested as fever, eschar, lymphadenopathy, rash, and other flu-like signs. Ocular involvement was not uncommon, and mostly occurred at post-fever or recovery stage in scrub typhus cases. We hereby report a case of scrub typhus presenting as unilateral optic neuritis (ON). A 56-year-old man going wild fishing nearly every day complained of a blurred vision and an inferior visual field defect in the right eye two or three days after an insect-bite like shin induration in his left leg. He was dia

Vision screening of older drivers for preventing road traffic injuries and fatalities.

BACKGROUND: Demographic data in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand suggest a rapid growth in the number of persons over the age of 65 years as the baby boomer generation passes retirement age. As older adults make up an increasing proportion of the population, they are an important consideration when designing future evidence-based traffic safety policies, particularly those that lead to restrictions or cessation of driving. Research has shown that cessation of driving among older drivers can lead to negative emotional consequences such as depression and loss of independenc

Perimetric Outcomes of Melbourne Rapid Field Perimetry in Patients With Glaucoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PRCIS: Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF) had shorter test durations than HFA, high agreement with HFA global indices, modest bias in MD and PSD measurements, and comparable concordance and repeatability. MRF had poorer reliability indices, while maintaining good diagnostic performance. PURPOSE: The Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) is the most widely used perimeter in glaucoma, but its cost and low portability limit its use in resource-constrained settings. Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF) is a low-cost, tablet-based perimeter system that enables at-home and low-resource testing. Despite growing evidence

Assessment and Rehabilitation of Post-Stroke Visual Field Impairments: Current Approaches and Emerging Technologies.

BackgroundVisual field defect following stroke can severely impair activities of daily living, such as visual exploration, reading, and mobility - significantly reducing quality of life. While neuroplasticity enables partial visual recovery in the first few months after stroke, the potential for recovery diminishes over time. Therefore, timely identification and treatment of visual field defects is critical.ObjectiveThis narrative review explores traditional methods and emerging technologies in visual assessment and rehabilitation. We examine traditional visual field screening methods, includi

Safety and efficacy of a laser refractive procedure in eyes with previous keratoplasty: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Post-keratoplasty (KP) patients' visual acuity can be severely limited by ametropia. Irregular astigmatisms are frequently encountered in these patients and is commonly associated with high degrees of hyperopia or myopia. This systematic review investigates the safety and efficacy of laser refractive surgery for post KP vision correction. 31 studies with 683 participants (732 eyes) enrolled in this review. Mean astigmatism improved significantly (mean difference [MD] = -2.70, 95% CI, -3.13 to -2.28, P < .0001). As well as Mean spherical equivalent (MD = -3.35, 95% CI, -3.92 to -2.78, P < .0001

Optimizing Refractive Outcomes of SMILE: Artificial Intelligence versus Conventional State-of-the-Art Nomograms.

PURPOSE: AI (artificial intelligence)-based methodologies have become established tools for researchers and physicians in the entire field of ophthalmology. However, the potential of AI to optimize the refractive outcome of keratorefractive surgery by means of machine learning (ML)-based nomograms has not been exhausted yet. In this study, we wanted to comprehensively compare state-of-the-art conventional nomograms for Small-Incision-Lenticule-Extraction (SMILE) with a novel ML-based nomogram regarding both their spherical and astigmatic predictability. METHODS: A total of 1,342 eyes were ana

Clinical applications of personalising the neural components of visual image quality metrics for individual eyes.

PURPOSE: Eyecare is evolving increasingly personalised corrections and increasingly personalised evaluations of corrections on-eye. This report describes individualising optical and neural components of the VSX (visual Strehl) metric and evaluates personalisation using two clinical applications. (1) Better understanding visual experience: While VSX tracks visual performance in typical eyes, non-individualised metrics underestimated visual performance in highly aberrated eyes - could this be understood by personalising metrics? (2) Metric-optimised objective spherocylindrical refractions in typ

Comparison of unifocal, flicker, and multifocal pupil perimetry methods in healthy adults.

To this day, the most popular method of choice for testing visual field defects (VFDs) is subjective standard automated perimetry. However, a need has arisen for an objective, and less time-consuming method. Pupil perimetry (PP), which uses pupil responses to onsets of bright stimuli as indications of visual sensitivity, fulfills these requirements. It is currently unclear which PP method most accurately detects VFDs. Hence, the purpose of this study is to compare three PP methods for measuring pupil responsiveness. Unifocal (UPP), flicker (FPP), and multifocal PP (MPP) were compared by monocu
