The differences in the pharmacokinetics of cefotaxime, moxalactam, and CPW 86-363, a new expanded-spectrum cephalosporin, were studied in healthy rabbits and in rabbits infected intravenously with Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pharmacokinetic analysis of concentration-time courses in the sera of infected animals according to a two compartment-model evidenced a clear decrease of drug fractions in the central compartment but enhanced drug fractions in the peripheral compartment. The effects of chronic alcohol feeding on thiamin status are controversial; both adverse and beneficial effects have been reported. In order to study these effects, rats and baboons were pair-fed liquid diets containing thiamin in excess of dietary requirements and either ethanol (rats 36%, baboons 50% of total calories) or the identical diet with ethanol substituted isocalorically by carbohydrate. In the rat, chronic alcohol feeding for up to 6 months had no effects on tissue thiamin measured by transketolase assay, thiamin pyrophosphate effect, or bioassay with Ochromonas danica. Shuttle box

Three cephalosporin derivatives were prepared from 1,4-dihydro-4-oxypyridine-1-acetic acid. These were the 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) derivative and the compounds with 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-thiol and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrazole-5-thiol at C-3 of the cephalosporin nucleus. The antibacterial activity of the 7-ACA derivative was comparable to cephalothin, and that of the other two derivatives was comparable to cefazolin. The 7-ACA derivative, compared to cephalothin, was significantly less metabolized, was less protein bound, and had a longer half life.

Oxytetracycline concentration of bile was determined after systemic and regional (intraportal) infusions. A single dose of 3.60 mg/kg of oxytetracycline was infused into the brachial vein of 8 dogs and into the portal vein of 9 dogs in 120 minutes. Bile samples taken at 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes showed that the liver excretes into the bile higher concentrations of oxytetracycline in the case of intraportal infusion. The results suggest that treatment of inflammatory diseases of bacterial origin of the biliary tree might be more effective when the antibiotic is applied in intraportal infusion

We compared results with three commercial folate radioassay kits [Bio-Rad, New England Nuclear (NEN), and RIA Products] with those by microbiological assay for more than 200 samples of human serum and whole blood. When fed to vitamin A-deficient rats, 5,6-monoepoxy-3-dehydroretinal was converted into 5,6-monoepoxy-3-dehydrovitamin A and stored in the liver. 3. It was demonstrated that the rat possesses the necessary enzymes for the reduction and oxidation of 5,6-monoepoxy-3-dehydroretinal to the corresponding alcohol and acid respectively. 4. The biological potency of the epoxy-3-dehydroretinal by the rat-growth assay (determined by USP XIV procedure) was 1.07% of that of vitamin A.
