Science, pseudoscience, and the frontline practitioner: the vaccination/autism debate.

This article demonstrates how misinformation concerning autism and vaccinations was created and suggests that social workers may be perfectly poised to challenge pseudoscience interpretations. Utilizing social network theory, this article illustrates how erroneous research, mass media, and public opinion led to a decreased use of vaccinations in the United States and a seven-fold increase in measles outbreaks. It traces the dissemination of spurious research results and demonstrates how information was transmitted via a system of social network nodes and community ties. This article encourages

Climate, Toxic Exposures and Work: Linking the Amazon, Africa, and Southern Europe through a COP30 Dialogue.

Climate change, toxic pollution, and social inequities are converging to create new risks for workers and communities, particularly in the Global South. Yet occupational and environmental health research and policy still tend to address these stressors in isolation, not considering their interactions. To synthesize the main messages of the COP30 side event, "Amazon and Heat: Community-First Climate-Environment-Health Action from the Amazon Basin to Africa and Europe", presented in the context of the LIMA2025 Conference on Occupational Medicine, and to propose a framework for integrated climate

Association of Work Patterns and Periodontitis Prevalence in Korean Adults Aged 50 Years or Older: A Nationwide Representative Study.

This study analyzed the relationship between the work pattern and the prevalence of periodontitis. We analyzed the data of 3320 adults (1779 men, 1543 women) aged 51-80 years from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). The work pattern was divided into two groups (regular and irregular). The periodontal status was assessed using the community periodontal index. We observed a statistically significant difference in the association between work patterns and prevalence of periodontitis in Korean women aged over 50 years. For female workers with irregular work pat

Prevalence of hypertension and associated factors among sanitation workers: a community based cross-sectional survey in five urban regions of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Sanitation workers represent a marginalized occupational group in Nepal often exposed to unsafe working conditions, physically demanding tasks, and occupational hazards. Despite their vulnerability, national surveys such as the Nepal Demographic Health Survey and the STEPwise Approach to surveillance, largely overlook this population. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors among sanitation workers of Nepal. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in five urban regions of Nepal. A total of 790 sanitation workers were

Exploring mistreatment of women during childbirth in a peri-urban setting in Kenya: experiences and perceptions of women and healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: In Kenya, indirectly caused maternal deaths form a significant portion of all maternal deaths within the health system. Many of these deaths are avoidable and occur during delivery and labor. Poor quality health service has been a recurring concern among women in Kenya, with women reporting interactions with healthcare workers that are often demeaning and abusive. This paper explores the experiences and perceptions of both female patients and healthcare workers regarding mistreatment during childbirth. This study aims to provide recommendations on how dignified care can be made the

Barriers and opportunities in developing community-based maternal and child health surveillance: A mixed methods study in Depok, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive health surveillance for vulnerable populations, particularly mothers and children, is essential beyond traditional surveys. It may help address gaps in identifying issues occurring outside health facilities or linked to social stigma. METHODS: This embedded mixed-methods study aimed to identify factors contributing to an effective community-based surveillance system for maternal and child health. Quantitative data on knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and stigma were collected through interviewer-assisted questionnaires in 300 households. Qualitative insights into ba

Rationale and design of a cluster randomized trial of a multifaceted intervention in people with hypertension: The Heart Outcomes Prevention and Evaluation 4 (HOPE-4) Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death throughout the world, with the majority of deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Despite clear evidence for the benefits of blood pressure reduction and availability of safe and low-cost medications, most individuals are either unaware of their condition or not adequately treated. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate whether a community-based, multifaceted intervention package primarily provided by nonphysician health workers can improve long-term cardiovascular risk in people with hypert

A mixed-methods quasi-experimental evaluation of a mobile health application and quality of care in the integrated community case management program in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The use of mobile health (mHealth) technology to improve quality of care (QoC) has increased over the last decade; limited evidence exists to espouse mHealth as a decision support tool, especially at the community level. This study presents evaluation findings of using a mobile application for integrated community case management (iCCM) by Malawi's health surveillance assistants (HSAs) in four pilot districts to deliver lifesaving services for children. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study design compared adherence to iCCM guidelines between HSAs using mobile application (n = 137)

Urinary schistosomiasis: options for control within endemic rural communities: a case study in south-west Nigeria.

A preliminary investigation was conducted into factors that may bring about control of morbidity due to endemic urinary schistosomiasis in rural communities. A Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices and Beliefs (KAPB) study was conducted among primary schoolchildren (those with more than four years elementary education) in Ogbagba village, Osun State, Nigeria, from October 1990 to December 1993, to ascertain their understanding of urinary schistosomiasis. The study further assessed the potential of subjective haematuria, i.e. asking children with haematuria in the recent past to so indicate, in detec

Occupational and Environmental Hazards of Correctional Settings: A Scoping Literature Review From ACOEM's Presidential Task Force on Correctional Institutions.

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining healthful, safe, and productive work environments for workers in correctional settings is a matter of deep consequence to the workers themselves, the institutions they serve, the incarcerated individuals with whom they share space, and inevitably, to our wider community. We hypothesized that an examination of the academic literature would reveal opportunities for an improved approach to research in these settings. METHODS: We performed a scoping literature review using search terms related to the occupational and environmental health of workers in correctional environme

Acceptability and feasibility of using non-specialist health workers to deliver mental health care: stakeholder perceptions from the PRIME district sites in Ethiopia, India, Nepal, South Africa, and Uganda.

Three-quarters of the global mental health burden exists in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet the lack of mental health services in resource-poor settings is striking. Task-sharing (also, task-shifting), where mental health care is provided by non-specialists, has been proposed to improve access to mental health care in LMICs. This multi-site qualitative study investigates the acceptability and feasibility of task-sharing mental health care in LMICs by examining perceptions of primary care service providers (physicians, nurses, and community health workers), community members, and …
