Classification of eating disturbance in children and adolescents: proposed changes for the DSM-V.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods of neural development and physical growth. The malnutrition and related medical complications resulting from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and eating disorder not otherwise specified may have more severe and potentially more protracted consequences during youth than during other age periods. The consensus opinion of an international workgroup of experts on the diagnosis and treatment of child and adolescent eating disorders is that (a) lower and more developmentally sensitive thresholds of symptom severity (e

Vascular endothelial growth factor and the eye: biochemical mechanisms of action and implications for novel therapies.

Ophthalmic complications arising from pathologic intraocular neovascularization are responsible for the majority of visual loss in most developed countries. Among the many disorders associated with intraocular neovascularization are retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. These conditions are the leading causes of blindness among infants, those of working age and the elderly, respectively. For nearly half a century the clinical findings associated with these conditions have suggested that the action of growth factors may play a pivotal role in the

Understanding the Spatial Predictors of Malnutrition Among 0-2 Years Children in India Using Path Analysis.

Background: Despite several programs and policies to turn down the burden of malnutrition in the country, the rank of India in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) is 102 among 117 countries, which indicates a serious hunger situation. It is essential to design more specific interventions by focusing on the key determinants that may directly or indirectly influence malnutrition in India. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Family and Health Survey-4 (NFHS) (2015-16), we developed a structural equation model to find the direct, indirect, and total effect of various determinants on stunting, wast

Research Priorities on the Relationship between Wasting and Stunting.

BACKGROUND: Wasting and stunting are global public health problems that frequently co-exist. However, they are usually separated in terms of policy, guidance, programming and financing. Though both wasting and stunting are manifestations of undernutrition caused by disease and poor diet, there are critical gaps in our understanding of the physiological relationship between them, and how interventions for one may affect the other. The aim of this exercise was to establish research priorities in the relationships between wasting and stunting to guide future research investments. METHODS AND FIN

Craniofacial dysmorphology in syndromes associated with abnormal physical growth.

Nine syndromes associated with varying patterns of abnormal physical growth were selected to study quantitative craniofacial dysmorphology with cephalometric analysis. A schematic diagram was developed in which a hexagon measures the neurocranium and facial skeletal size and form. This hexagon offers the possibility of quantitative dysmorphic roentgencephalometry to study the effects of various growth disorders on the craniofacial complex.

[Placental production of growth factors and its value in the prediction of neonatal cerebral lesions].

The placental production of growth factors (epidermal growth factors (EGF) and placental growth factor (PGF)) was studied in females with complicated pregnancy. Analysis of the findings permitted calculation of an EGF/PGF ratio. This ratio was correlated with the babies' health status at birth and during neonatality. The clinical application of the EGF/PGF ratio makes it possible to predict neurological disorders in infants, to optimize therapeutic measures, to form groups at high risk for cerebral lesions, and to perform their timely correction.

Growth hormone release in response to human pancreatic tumor growth hormone-releasing hormone-40 in children with short stature.

Forty children with short stature were evaluated for GH reserve after pharmacological tests and after a single iv injection of human pancreatic tumor GH-releasing hormone [hpGRH-40). These children were grouped into four diagnostic categories: 1) idiopathic GH deficiency (n = 10); 2) organic hypopituitarism (n = 7); 3) intrauterine growth retardation (n = 5); and 4) constitutional delay of growth and/or familial short stature (n = 18), by standard clinical criteria and physiological and pharmacological tests of GH reserve. Venous blood was sampled for GH concentrations on 2 consecutive days: o

Effects of nutrition and gestational alcohol consumption on fetal growth and development.

Fetal alcohol exposure can lead to a range of developmental disorders, including impaired fetal growth and development of multiple organ systems. These disorders are grouped under the term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Adequate nutrition and a conducive intrauterine environment are essential for healthy fetal development. Nutrient deficiencies resulting from inadequate maternal nutrient ingestion may be compounded by alcohol-induced altered nutrient metabolism, placental clearance, and malabsorption. Alcohol-induced alteration of the intrauterine environment is the main source of d

[Dental malocclusion in children: warning signs].

WARNING SIGNS. Dental malocclusions are common, and can be dental, skeletal and/or functional. Detecting these pathologies earlier is a signal to remove these causing factors, and act in favor of an harmonious growth of the jaws and the face. The dental alert signs include abnormalities of shapes, numbers, positions and eruption delay. Arch length discrepancy is due to a problem of teeth positions on the arch, resulting in overlaps or in interdental spaces. Dento-skeletal abnormalities are also to be analysed in the three space dimensions: the sagittal direction looks for a jaw too much projec

Growth hormone therapy in children with partial growth hormone deficiency. Are we treating the right patients?

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children with short stature, whose height is below -2SD for the population norm, is based on the assessment of growth hormone (GH) peaks in stimulation tests. However, cut-off values for GH secretion are arbitrary and vary in different centres. Indications for recombinant GH therapy remain disputable in children with GH concentrations between 5 and 10 ng/ml (pGHD). AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of our study was to assess the effects of rhGH therapy in children with transient pGHD deficiency compared to untreated children with idiopathi

Neuron-specific Mafb knockout causes growth retardation accompanied by an impaired growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor I axis.

Mammalian postnatal growth is regulated primarily by the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) axis. MafB is a basic leucine zipper (bZip) transcription factor that has pleiotropic functions. Although MafB plays a critical role in fetal brain development, such as in guidance for hindbrain segmentation, its postnatal role in neurons remains to be elucidated. To investigate this, we used neuron-specific Mafb conditional knockout (cKO) mice. In addition to an approximately 50% neonatal viability, the Mafb cKO mice exhibited growth retardation without apparent signs of low energ

Standardization of Growth Hormone and Insulin-like Growth Factor-I Measurements.

Measurement of the levels of growth hormone (GH) and its related factor insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of GH deficiency (GHD) and conditions related to excess GH such as acromegaly and pituitary gigantism. Measurement of GH levels is also used as an indicator of hypothalamic-pituitary function. Because of the marked variability in GH measurements among kits, the Study Committee for GH and Its Related Factors of The Foundation for Growth Science, Japan standardized GH values measured with various commercially available GH assay kits in Japan. Growth and growth hormone: An overview.

Growth is a good indicator of a child's health. Growth disturbances, including short stature or growth failure, could be indications of illnesses such as chronic disease, nutritional deficits, celiac disease or hormonal abnormalities. Therefore, a careful assessment of the various requirements for normal growth needs to be done by history, physical examination, and screening laboratory tests. More details will be reviewed about the GH-IGF axis, its abnormalities with special emphasis on GH deficiency, its diagnosis and treatment. GH treatment indications in the US will be reviewed and a few on

Short stature and pubertal delay in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are shorter than their healthy peers. The introduction of corticosteroid (CS) has beneficial effects on muscle function but slows growth further and is associated with pubertal delay. In contrast to CS usage in most children and adolescents, weaning glucocorticoid is not a key objective of management in DMD. As the outlook for these young people improves, one of the main challenges is to reduce or offset the detrimental effects of CS on growth and development. This is a review of the aetiology and prevalence of short stature and delayed puberty i
