Excimer light therapy in childhood segmental vitiligo: Early treatment gives better results.

Segmental vitiligo (SV) is considered to be relatively less responsive form of vitiligo to medical treatment. While excimer light (EL) has shown great promise in treating localized vitiligo especially on face and neck, its efficacy in SV is not reported so commonly. We conducted a retrospective study on patients of childhood SV who had received EL therapy from January 2016 to December 2018 at our institute. Data of all such cases who had received at least 10 doses of EL treatment or achieved complete repigmentation were selected for analysis. Records of 26 children with SV satisfied the select

OBJECTIVES: To report the refractive and visual outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with the thinnest corneal thickness (CCT) of less than 500 µm and evaluate it in terms of safety and efficacy. SETTING: Refractive Surgery Clinic of University of Health Sciences Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: The pre-and-postoperative examinations of all patients with thin corneas (preoperative CCT <500 µm) who underwent the SMILE procedure and had a minimum of 24 months of follow-up records were reviewed from med

Photorefractive keratectomy in eyes with atypical topography.

Laser correction of refractive errors is one of the most effective surgical procedures today. Even so, the selection of patients who will have the outcomes they expect remains a major challenge. Corneal ectasia, a frustrating problem that can occur naturally with diseases such as keratoconus, has also been reported after refractive surgery. This review addresses the issues surrounding the use of surface refractive surgery in patients who may have atypical topography, which is a risk factor for ectasia. At present, available tests for predicting future corneal stability can give false positives

Comparison of Placido-based, rasterstereography, and slit-scan corneal topography systems.

PURPOSE: Elevation-based topography systems have received growing recognition. We compared a Placido-based (EyeSys), a rasterstereography (PAR), and a slit-scan system (Orbscan) for human subjects. METHODS: Measurements were obtained from 221 eyes of 119 human subjects. We made statistical comparisons central curvature, keratometric curvatures, and meridians between the three systems. We also compared the optical pachymetry of the slit-scan system with an ultrasonic device. We analyzed cases of subclinical keratoconus, central island, photorefractive keratectomy for myopia, and hyperopia corr

[Analysis of light scatter changes and relevant factors after laser refractive surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes and relevant factors of forward scatter after Epipolis laser in situ keratomileusis (Epi-LASIK)and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: It was a prospective clinical comparative study. 45 patients (45 eyes) were scheduled for Epi-LASIK and 42 patients (42 eyes) for LASIK. Straylight examinations were performed using the C-Quant straylight meter before and 1, 4, 10 months after surgery. The data was analyzed for statistical significance by one-way ANOVA and the correlation was tested by Pearson's test by using SPSS 13.0 software. RESULTS: The st

Utility of a multipurpose catheter for transvenous extraction of old broken leads: A novel technique for fragile leads.

BACKGROUND: Transvenous lead extraction has been possible since the 1980s. However, complications during lead extraction, such as the distal end fragment of the lead remaining in the myocardium or venous system and injury to the veins or heart, have been reported. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine our method for complete removal of a separated lead, as extraction of long-term implanted devices is difficult using standard methods and may require additional procedures. The removal of leads with inner conductor coil and lead tip separated from outer insulation, conductor coil,

Comparison of clinical outcomes following small incision lenticule extraction performed with the visumax 800 versus visumax 500 femtosecond laser.

This study compared clinical outcomes between small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedures performed with the Visumax 800 and Visumax 500 femtosecond lasers. We compared the clinical outcomes of 100 eyes of 50 patients who underwent SMILE using the Visumax 800 (SMILE Pro group) and 100 eyes of 50 patients who underwent SMILE using the Visumax 500 femtosecond laser (SMILE group). Outcomes were assessed at a 3-month follow-up, including standard visual outcomes, optic zone decentration, and corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs). The mean lenticule creation time was significantly shor

Femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis for the correction of high myopia in Meesmann corneal dystrophy: a case report.

The patient was a 26-year-old woman who had manifest refraction and uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities of -7.00 × -4.50 at 175°, 20/400, and 20/25, respectively, in the right eye, and -3.25 × -5.25 at 179°, 20/200, and 20/25, respectively, in the left eye. In the right and left eyes, the mean corneal thicknesses were 733 and 749 µm, and the maximum epithelial thicknesses were 70 and 68 µm, respectively. Myriads of intraepithelial cysts were observed in the slit-lamp examination. At 30 months after femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (femto-LASIK), the manife

Characteristics of disk halo size and its correlation with lenticule quality in small incision lenticule extraction for moderate to high myopia.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in disk halo size after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and the correlation between halo size and lenticule quality in moderate to high myopia. METHODS: Thirty eyes of 30 consecutive patients (mean age, 24.9 ± 4.5 years; mean spherical equivalent, -6.85 ± 1.18 D) undergoing SMILE were included in this prospective study. Lenticule surface quality was accessed with a scanning electron microscopy by a scoring system. Halo size was measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to exp
