Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are growing in prevalence. Ultrasound (US) is increasingly used for managing MSK conditions due to its low cost and ability to provide real-time image guidance during therapeutic interventions. As MSK US becomes more widespread, familiarity and comfort with US-guided interventions will become increasingly important. This article focuses on general concepts regarding therapeutic US-guided injections of corticosteroids and platelet-rich plasma and highlights several of the US-guided procedures commonly performed, involving the pelvis and lower extremity.

After traumatic amputation of the distal half of the leg, a replantation was carried out using microsurgical technique in a 24-year-old lumber mill worker. He returned to his job after 1 year, and 6 years after the accident he had good function and satisfactory sensibility in the sole of his foot. The case shows that even a lower limb replantation may give useful results under favourable conditions.

An isolated fracture of the middle and lower third of the tibia occurred with marked regularity in a large number of camel-racing jockeys. The mechanism of this fracture was analysed. It was concluded that the compression-rotation of the leg below the knee between the trunks of adjacent racing camels produced this injury, but the sparing of the fibula could not be explained. Simple measures are described such that the incidence of these and other injuries sustained by the jockeys can be markedly reduced.

Authors review nation-wide hospital data of amputees over two years in order to make comparison with similar data gathered about 20 years ago. Data were provided by the National Medical Records Centre and processed by own developed programmes. The quality level of data validity is slightly criticised. A pseudolipoma is a benign fatty tumor whose etiology is undetermined but is postulated to be secondary to a tear in Scarpa's fascia resulting in herniation of deeper fat through Scarpa's layer. Provision of soft-tissue coverage for defects in the distal leg and foot is a challenge, especially in patients with multiple injuries and major soft-tissue defects.
