Therapeutic touch applied to primary tumors can increase metastasis. The goal of this project was to determine whether touch applied to metastatic tumors also increases metastasis. We evaluated touch on a mouse model of experimental metastasis using a manual treatment called Lymphatic Pumping Technique (LPT), which increases lymphatic fluid flow and is contraindicated in patients with cancer. Nondegradable glass microspheres (35 mu) were injected into the portal vein for toxicity test in 15 rabbits. In rats of the first generation subjected to transplacental DMBA action with subsequent (at the age of 3 months) induction of persistent estrus, the incidence of tumours significantly increased, particularly, those of the nervous system and the mammary gland. Rats of the second generation with induced persistent estrus and not exposed to DMBA developed neoplasms of the nervous system and kidneys which were not observed in the intact control animals. This fact suggests persistence of DMBA transplacental carcinogenic effect in a series of generations.

The selective deficiency of manganese, copper, zinc and silicon in the diet of animals essentially decreases the content of the corresponding element in the organism tissues and disturbs the activity of some blood metalloenzymes in tumour-carrying animals. The tumour tissue retains the metals under study in higher amounts. When rats are given the diet with copper deficiency, there are no essential changes in the growth of Guerin carcinoma, whereas deficiency of manganese, silicon and particularly in zinc in the animal diet causes an inhibition of its growth. Upon heating at 40 degrees C for 30 minutes, the oxygenation of the tumor tissue significantly improved as compared with control conditions at 35 degrees C. In contradistinction to this, the tumor oxygenation significantly decreased directly after 43 degrees C- hyperthermia. A further temperature rise to 45 degrees C caused the oxygenation to drastically drop due to an almost complete cessation of nutritive blood flow. The changes in tumor oxygenation during hyperthermia seem to be predominatly mediated through changes in tumor blood flow, which showed the same directional changes.

By using no carcinogens, well differentiated teratomas were induced by BALB/c nu/+, +/+ and ICR strain of mice. On the 11th to 18th day of gestation, mice were laparotomized and all fetuses were removed from uterus, leaving placentas in situ and fetal membranes were protruded into peritoneal cavity. Large test programs have been set up to help assess the carcinogenic potential of chemicals introduced into the environment. Most test protocols used in these programs require large numbers of animals and extensive pathologic evaluation of all test and control animals. In this paper we describe modifications to the present pathology protocol which will reduce the pathology workload of the program and make only small changes in the operational character of the screen. The first modification derives from the fact that a tumorigenic effect may be ruled out by looking at the treated animals only.
