Desmoplastic (sclerotic) nevus: an underrecognized entity that resembles dermatofibroma and desmoplastic melanoma.

Desmoplastic (sclerotic) nevus, a benign melanocytic neoplasm characterized by predominantly spindle-shaped nevus cells within a fibrotic stroma, can be confused with fibrous lesions and other melanocytic proliferations, including desmoplastic melanoma. We compared the histologic and immunohistochemical features of 16 desmoplastic nevi, nine desmoplastic melanomas, four hypopigmented blue nevi, and six dermatofibromas. The similarities between desmoplastic nevi and dermatofibromas included epidermal hyperplasia (12 of 16), presence of keloidal collagen (15 of 16), hypercellularity (16 of 16), …

Linear sebaceous nevus syndrome: report of a patient with unusual associated abnormalities.

A 9-year-old girl was diagnosed as having a linear sebaceous nevus syndrome (LSNS). The nevus sebaceus was located on the face, and the girl also had nevoid hypertrichosis on the neck, sensorineural deafness, partial anodontia, blocked tear ducts, labiopalatoschisis, and an area of micropolygyria in the left encephalic (cerebral) hemisphere. Electroencephalographic alterations were detected, but they were not accompanied by a history of seizures; furthermore, the child was not mentally retarded. This phenotypic pattern of LSNS is unusual for the rarity of associated abnormalities.

A mutation in the mucosal keratin K4 is associated with oral white sponge nevus.

White sponge nevus (WSN) is a benign autosomal dominant disorder which affects non-cornifying stratified squamous epithelia (MIM 193900) (ref. 1). Phenotypically it presents as white 'spongy' plaques (oral leukokeratoses), most commonly in the mouth but also reported in the esophagus and anogenital mucosa. Histologically, the plaques show evidence of hyperproliferation, acanthosis and tonofilament aggregation. These types of pathogenic changes are characteristic of many of the epidermal keratin disorders. Keratins are expressed in pairs by epithelial cells in a tissue and cell specific manner.…

Benign pigmented tumor with combined features of seborrheic keratosis and compound nevus.

A thirty-six-year-old woman with an unusual benign pigmented tumor of the ankle is presented. Histopathology of the tumor showed combined features of a seborrheic keratosis and a compound nevus. Combined pigmented tumors should be included in the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions.

Diffuse iris nevus in oculodermal melanocytosis: a light and electron microscopic study.

We studied by light and electron microscopy the diffuse iris nevus of an eye in a 16-year-old patient with oculodermal melanocytosis and choroidal malignant melanoma. The nevus cells in the anterior border layer of the iris appeared to be poorly differentiated, showing moderate infolding of the nuclear membrane with heterochromatin clumping, watery cytoplasm, abundant mitochondria, fine filaments, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and numerous pinocytotic vesicles. Small scattered immature melanosomes and occasional giant melanosomes were observed in these cells. Deep in the iris stroma, however, n…

A case of solitary mastocytoma suggesting a divided form of mast cell nevus.

The case of a 10-week-old boy with a solitary mastocytoma is reported. The lesion, noticed at birth, was located in an area extending from the dorsum of the left hand to the proximal phalanx of the ring and little fingers. It appeared as a coin-sized, flattened dome-shaped, round tumor with occasional blistering. The web between the two fingers was free of cutaneous changes. The diagnosis was confirmed by the histological characteristics: a densely mastocytic infiltration into the dermis. The present case of solitary mastocytoma, referred to as "mast cell nevus", is unique because of its previ…

Pigmentary regression in a giant nevocellular nevus: a case report and a review of the subject.

A giant congenital nevocytic nevus (CNN) on the trunk was followed in a patient from age three months to 23-years-old. During that time the nevus underwent pigmentary regression leaving 2-3 mm lentigines without any evidence of vitiligo or halo formation around the giant CNN. Histopathologically, nevus cells remained in the dermis.

Benign and malignant cellular blue nevus. A clinicopathological study of 30 cases.

The clinical and pathological features of 29 cellular blue nevi (CBN) and one malignant cellular blue nevus from our hospital files were reviewed. Although the sacrococcygeal region/buttock was the commonest single site, the majority of CBN occurred on the limb peripheries. Two-thirds of patients were under the age of 40 years. Follow-up of a mean of 7 years did not reveal any evidence of malignancy. Four histological subtypes were recognized: mixed biphasic, alveolar, fascicular or neuronevoid, and atypical varieties. One case developed a benign nodal metastasis. In one case, malignancy arose…

Resolution of prepubertal male gynecomastia following removal of a giant pigmented nevus.

A male infant is reported in whom substantial gynecomastia resolved following removal of a giant pigmented nevus. Endocrinological studies were normal. It is postulated that the nevus contributed to the development of gynecomastia. Surgeons should be aware of a possible relationship between these two seemingly unrelated conditions when making evaluation and management decisions.

Clinicopathological Spectrum of Nevus Lipomatosus Superficialis: Insights From a Single-Center Study.

INTRODUCTION: Nevus lipomatosus superficialis (NLS) is a rare benign cutaneous hamartoma characterized by mature adipose tissue in the dermis. Clinically, it appears as soft, skin-colored or yellowish papules or nodules. It manifests in classical or solitary form, often misdiagnosed as lipofibroma, acrochordon, or papillomas. NLS is frequently misdiagnosed because its clinical and cytological features overlap with those of subcutaneous lipomatous lesions, while its defining characteristic (ectopic adipocytes within the dermis) is only evident on histopathological examination. This study descri…

Generalized Nevus Lipomatosus Cutaneous Superficialis: A Case Report with Comprehensive Genetic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nevus lipomatosus superficialis (NLS) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma characterized by ectopic adipose tissue in the dermis. Its genetic basis remains largely unknown. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive clinical, histopathological, and genetic investigation of a 17-year-old female with an exceptionally extensive distribution of lesions (involving trunk, buttocks, lower extremities, and vulva) that was atypical due to the presence of significant pain and recurrent infections. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed on the proband and both parents (trio-WES), and whole genome se…

Flumethasone-salicylic acid cream effectively flattened verrucous epidermal nevus: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of topical compound flumethasone pivalate-salicylic acid cream for verrucous epidermal nevus (VEN), a benign keratinocytic hamartoma with limited current treatment options. METHODS: A 25-year-old male with 20-year VEN (right buttock/lower limb plaques) was treated with the compound cream (0.2 mg flumethasone pivalate + 30 mg salicylic acid/gram) twice daily for over 2 months, followed by 14-week follow-up. RESULTS: Lesions showed progressive thinning, significantly reduced hyperpigmentation, and no adverse events. The Dermatology Life Quality Ind…

[Diagnosis of choroidal nevus following multiple intravitreal anti-VEGF injections (case study)].

This article describes a clinical case of a female patient with choroidal nevus, who was previously diagnosed in another clinic with "subretinal neovascular membrane as a result of central serous chorioretinopathy" and subsequently underwent multiple intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. Based on the analysis of OCT angiography images, the macular changes in this case were interpreted as a polypoidal form of neovascularization in a patient with subfoveolar choroidal nevus.
