BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that ischemic coronary disease (ICD) associated potassium loss could be due to modifications of potassium permeability. We investigated whether a positive family history of ICD can influence this parameter. Stable isotopic tracers of calcium have been used to characterize the absorption of dietary calcium and the subsequent distribution of this element through the body. For a group of 7 healthy children, ages 4-14, and 7 children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), types I, III and IV, ages 6-17, there were no detectable differences in the fractional absorption of dietary calcium, 0.29+/-0.11 and 0.28+/-0.16, respectively. We have developed a guinea pig model of iron overload toxicity. Animals were administered intraperitoneal iron dextran 3 times a week to achieve total body iron load of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g Fe/kg body weight in less than 30 days. In the present study the acute effect of intravenous aluminum chloride (1 mg/kg) on choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities of rats was investigated. The urinary excretion of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), which is an effective chelating agent for lead, was determined after the oral administration of 10 mg DMSA/kg to six normal young men. Simultaneous assay of blood lead (Pb-B) and red cell lead (Pb-Rbc) in 123 samples from 104 urban and suburban students, ages 10-18, shows the ratio of concentration (Pb-Rbc)/(Pb-B) to increase as the hematocrit decreases.
