Schizophrenia has been extensively associated with reduced cortical thickness (CT), and its neurodevelopmental origin is increasingly acknowledged. However, the exact timing and extent of alterations occurring in preclinical phases remain unclear. With a high prevalence of psychosis, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic disorder that represents a unique opportunity to examine brain maturation in high-risk individuals. In this study, we quantified trajectories of CT maturation in 22q11DS and examined the association of CT development with the emergence of psychotic symptoms. Lo

BACKGROUND: Early parental death is one of the most stressful childhood life events and may influence subsequent psychological health. We investigated the association between early parental loss and risk of hospitalization for an affective disorder in adulthood.
METHODS: Our nationwide register-based cohort study comprises 1,225,660 people born in Denmark in 1970-1990, of whom 138,893 experienced the death of a parent before the age of 30 years. Follow-up for hospitalization for an affective disorder in the period 1990-2009 yielded 15,261,058 person-years and 19,867 hospitalizations for affec

Suicide by ingestion of barium is exceptionally rare. Adverse health effects depend on the solubility of the barium compound. Severe hypokalemia, which generally occurs within 2 hours after ingestion, is the predominating feature of acute barium toxicity, subsequently leading to adverse effects on muscular activity and cardiac automaticity. We report one case of acute poisoning with barium nitrate, a soluble barium compound. A 75-year-old woman was hospitalized after suicidal ingestion of a burrow mole fumigant containing 12.375 g of barium nitrate. About 1 hour post-ingestion, she was only co

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that alterations of the acute stress reaction are a vulnerability indicator of psychosis. However, more studies are needed that use laboratory stressors and a multimodal assessment of the stress reaction. Furthermore, it needs to be clarified whether alterations of the acute stress reaction result from the chronic stress level.
METHODS: We recruited participants at familial (n = 32) and symptomatic risk (n = 43) for psychosis and a low-risk control group (n = 35). We assessed their chronic stress levels (self-report, hair cortisol

In this article we report the first series of Turkish inpatients with late-onset psychosis, and describe our 9-year experience at the only inpatient geriatric psychiatry department in Turkey. Among 420 patients hospitalized between 1993 and 2002, 27 were psychotic. In this group, eight patients were diagnosed as having late-onset schizophrenia (LOS) and six very-late-onset schizophrenia-like psychosis (VLOSLP). Five patients had early-onset schizophrenia and eight had delusional disorder. Females were more frequently seen in the group with LOS and the group with VLOSLP. Except for one patient

Pattern recognition methods were carried out on a sample of 80 depressed men, assessed by means of 14 items relevant to depressive symptomatology of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. 1985 edition (SCID). A cluster analysis generated two classes, which were described as a vital (n = 35) and a nonvital cluster (n = 45). Vital depressives were characterized by psychomotor disorders, loss of energy, cognitive disturbances, a distinct quality of mood, early morning awakening and nonreactivity (the "vital" symptoms). Our findings support the descriptive validity of the DSM-III melanch

Capgras syndrome is a delusional misidentification syndrome characterized by the recurrent belief that someone, usually a family member, has been replaced by an impostor. Although described over a century ago, its aetiology, clinical features and neuroimaging characteristics remain poorly understood due to its rarity. This study aimed to clarify these aspects through the analysis of a large cohort and to explore its clinical implications and underlying mechanisms. We conducted a retrospective cohort study by reviewing medical records of patients diagnosed with Capgras syndrome at the Mayo Clin

OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of practising clinicians and researchers to the phenomenological distinctions between visual hallucinations and trauma-based, dissociative, visual re-experiencing phenomena seen in psychiatric disease.
CONCLUSIONS: The experience of visual hallucinations is not exclusive to psychotic disorders in psychiatry. Different forms of experiences that resemble visual hallucinations may occur in patients with a trauma background and may potentially affect diagnosis. Given the paucity of literature around the subject, it is imperative that further research aims to chara

This study compared the anti-aggressiveness effects of the atypical anti-psychotic olanzapine with that of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and benzodiazepines (BZD) among patients with heroin dependence submitted to opioid-agonists substitution treatment. Sixty-seven (67) patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for heroin dependence and showed aggressive personality traits, not affected by comorbid schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, accepted to participate in a 12-week prospective, observational trial. Patients were included into two subgroups in relationship with treatment, for th

The diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia and the diagnostic criteria for personality disorders refer to the same dimensions of mental functioning, except for the presence of typical psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions and catatonic behaviours). Since schizophrenia is a psychosis with a predominantly chronic course, with exacerbations and steady course periods, a simultaneous diagnosis of personality disorders, which are also "permanent" in nature, and a significant part of which affect the same areas of mental functioning, in the same patient is at least controversi

According to the latest estimates, there are around 24.6 million cocaine users worldwide, and it is estimated that around a quarter of the population worldwide has used cocaine at some point in their lifetime. It follows that such widespread consumption represents a major risk for public health. Long-term use of cocaine, in addition to being related to many cerebral and cardiovascular diseases, is increasingly associated with a higher incidence of psychomotor symptoms and neurodegenerative disorders. In recent years, numerous studies have shown an increased risk of antipsychotic-induced extrap

Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 0.2-2% of the population worldwide. Often striking without warning in the late teens or early twenties, its symptoms include auditory and visual hallucinations, psychotic outbreaks, bizarre or disordered thinking, depression and social withdrawal. To combat the disease, new antipsychotic drugs are emerging; these atypical neuroleptics target dopamine and serotonin pathways in the brain, offering increased therapeutic efficacy with fewer side effects. Despite their moderate success in controlling some patients' symptoms,

Over the last 10 years or so in Europe, there has been a development of the "ecstasy" phenomenon, which is the symbol of "recreational" drugs in general. Users, either alone or in private parties, are on the increase. The phenomenon is most frequent in England and in the Netherlands, with an estimated incidence of 13-18% amongst the 18-25 years old, which may reach 52% in "exposed populations", such as individuals who go to "techno" night clubs. In France, the prevalence is uncertain, but estimated at least 5% of males between 18 and 23 years old. Several substance, with more or less the same

A psychological study, which included personality testing (BDI, MMPI, RO, TAT), was performed on 42 patients with clinical symptoms of chronic prostatitis. The patients were characterized by prolonged symptoms and poor response to treatment by general practitioners. Some degree of psychic difficulty was revealed in 80% of the patients, and signs of severe psychic disturbance in 20 to 50%. The outstanding psychic symptoms were anxiety, depression, affect-lability, weak masculine identity and other sexual disorders, and even psychotic features. This pattern of psychic disorders corresponds with

PURPOSE AND METHODS: In order to assess the specifics of practical use of the ICD-10 Diagnostic Guidelines by Russian psychiatrists, official national statistics on the prevalence of a number of mental disorders in Russia in 2019 were compared with the results of meta-analyses of international epidemiological studies of these disorders. In addition, a number of items in the online psychiatrists' survey, relating to the diagnosis of schizophrenia, were analysed; 807 Russian psychiatrists took part in the online survey.
RESULTS: Analysis of national statistics showed that domestic clinicians di

During the postpartum and menopausal periods of women's lives, there is a well-established and significant drop of circulating estrogens. This may be the reason why both these periods are associated with an increased risk for onset or exacerbation of psychiatric disorders. Whether symptoms are mainly affective or mainly psychotic, these disorders are frequently treated with antipsychotic medications, which calls for an examination of the relationship between hormone replacement and antipsychotic agents at these time periods. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize what is known about

IMPORTANCE: Established nosology identifies schizoaffective disorder as a distinct category with boundaries separating it from mood disorders with psychosis and from schizophrenia. Alternative models argue for a single boundary distinguishing mood disorders with psychosis from schizophrenia (kraepelinian dichotomy) or a continuous spectrum from affective to nonaffective psychosis.
OBJECTIVE: To identify natural boundaries within psychotic disorders by evaluating associations between symptom course and long-term outcome.

OBJECTIVE: We explored the subjective effects associated with olanzapine, risperidone and older antipsychotics.
METHOD: We conducted a content analysis of an Internet database of comments about prescribed medications.
RESULTS: We analysed 223 comments on risperidone, 170 on olanzapine and 46 relating to three older antipsychotics. The predominant subjective effects produced by all drugs consisted of sedation, cognitive impairment and emotional flattening or indifference. Connections appeared between these effects and Parkinsonian-like symptoms with the older drugs, sexual impairment with ris

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Consistent with diathesis-stress models, psychosis research has focused on genetic moderation of adverse environmental exposures. In contrast, the Differential Susceptibility (DS) model suggests that the same genetic variants that increase risk-inducing effects of adverse experiences also enhance beneficial effects from positive experiences. This study examined whether individuals with high genetic susceptibility to the environment showed differential psychotic-like and affective reactivity in response to positive and negative events in daily life.

Psychiatry lags in adopting etiological approaches to diagnosis, prognosis, and outcome prediction compared to the rest of medicine. Etiological factors such as childhood trauma (CHT), substance use (SU), and socioeconomic status (SES) significantly affect psychotic disorder symptoms. This study applied an agnostic clustering approach to identify exposome clusters "Exposotypes (ETs)" and examine their relationship with clinical, cognitive, and functional outcomes. Using data from individuals with psychotic disorders (n=1,350), and controls (n=623), we assessed the relationship between the expo
