BACKGROUND: The nitroxide Tempol (4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) is a stable, free radical that exhibits protection from ionizing radiation damage and from oxidative stress mediated through exposure of cells to superoxide or hydrogen peroxide. Radiation protection has been observed in both in vivo and in vitro models. To understand the mechanism of Tempol-mediated radioprotection better, the production of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations was evaluated. This study analyzed Tempol-mediated radioprotection of human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs).
METHODS: Peripheral

BACKGROUND: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the Bartholin gland is an extremely uncommon gynecologic tumor. Brain metastasis from a malignant gynecologic lesion is rarely encountered and the prognosis for this type of metastasis is quite poor.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a brain metastasis from a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the Bartholin gland that was treated by surgical resection followed by whole-brain radiation therapy and review the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Different treatment options, including resection, stereotactic radiosurgery, and whole-brain radiation

BACKGROUND: Injury to reproductive organs including the uterus is a known complication of ionizing radiation, but the risks to the mother and fetus during subsequent pregnancies are not well defined.
CASE: A young woman with a remote history of whole body irradiation for childhood leukemia had uterine rupture at 17 weeks' gestation. Pathologic examination of the supracervical hysterectomy specimen revealed a posterior-fundal placenta percreta with a diffusely thinned myometrium (1-6 mm). The clinicopathologic findings were consistent with prior radiation injury.
CONCLUSION: Uterine irradiati

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy to the head and neck can lead to severe side effects including xerostomia, caries, and in worst cases to osteoradionecrosis. Dental rehabilitation prior to radiotherapy is strongly recommended to reduce osteoradionecrosis risk, ideally in a dose-dependent manner. However, dentists do not know where high radiation doses are expected and radical tooth extractions continue to be performed. Study aim was to determine the radiation exposure in different dental regions depending on the tumour location to create a decision tree for clinicians.
METHODS: The presen

BACKGROUND: Candida spp. are significant pathogens for hospital-acquired infections. Infections with Candida auris especially have gained increased attention due to their transmissibility and resistance properties, making new decolonization tools necessary. Far-ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation might be a new tool to inactivate Candida spp. independent of their resistance profile. The use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) allows a flexible application of the radiation enabling, for example, the treatment of areas that are not accessible by the use of common antiseptics such as the throat or the mid

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, the organs at risk (OARs) should be carefully determined when performing pancreatic stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). We conducted a simulation study to examine the effect of the stomach size on the radiation dose to the OARs when performing pancreatic SBRT.
METHODS: Twenty-five cases were included in this study. Pancreatic head and body tumors were 2-cm-sized pseudotumors, which were included as gross target volume (GTV) contours. The stomach, pancreas, small intestine, liver, kidneys, and spinal cord were considered as the OARs. The prescription dose f

BACKGROUND: Measures were undertaken at the Cleveland Clinic to reduce radiation exposure to patients and personnel working in the catheterization laboratories. We report our experience with these improved systems over a 7-year period in patients undergoing diagnostic catheterization (DC) and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs).
METHODS: Patients were categorized into preinitiative (2009-2012) and postinitiative (2013-2019) groups in the DC and PCI cohorts. Propensity score matching was done between the pre- and postinitiative groups for both cohorts based on age, sex, body surface are

BACKGROUND: Lumpectomy followed by radiation can lead to severe breast asymmetry. Many surgeons are hesitant to perform traditional mastopexies on irradiated breasts due to increased complication rates. An alternative approach to achieve breast symmetry is presented. This technique consists of free nipple-areola complex (NAC) grafting of the irradiated breast to a higher position and primary closure of the donor site, in an appropriate fashion without undermining, followed by a formal mastopexy of the nonradiated breast.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of free NAC grafting, used as an alt

BACKGROUND: The use and frequency of computed tomography (CT) are increasing day by day in emergency departments (ED). This increases the amount of radiation exposed.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the image quality obtained by ultra-low-dose CT (ULDCT) in patients with suspected wrist fractures in the ED and to investigate whether it is an alternative to standard-dose CT (SDCT).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a study prospectively examining 336 patients who consulted the ED for wrist trauma. After exclusion criteria were applied, the patients were divided into the study and control groups. Then, SDCT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High-dose fractionated radiotherapy is often necessary to achieve long-term tumor control in several types of tumors involving or within close proximity to the brain. There is limited data to guide on optimal constraints to the adjacent nontarget brain. This investigation explored the significance of the three-dimensional (3D) dose distribution of passive scattering proton therapy to the brain with other clinicopathological factors on the development of symptomatic radiation necrosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with head and neck, skull base, or intracranial t

Background: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) of the maxillary sinus is an extremely rare malignancy of the head and neck. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for UPS; however, proximity to vital structures makes it challenging to achieve negative surgical margins. Adjuvant therapy including radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy is generally indicated. Despite advances in multimodality treatment, objective response rates to available therapies and prognosis of metastatic UPS remain dismal. Immunotherapy has become a fourth cornerstone of cancer therapy and checkpoint blockad

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative surveillance protocols after nephrectomy for kidney cancer include periodic computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest and abdomen. A single study exposes the patient to 21 mSv (equivalent to 7-year exposure to natural background radiation). The objective of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that an abbreviated CT protocol restricted to the chest and upper abdomen (i.e., to the level of the intervertebral disk L3-L4) is sufficient for routine postnephrectomy follow-up as it detects most tumor recurrence with lower radiation exposure.
METHODS: We identified…

BACKGROUND: Confirmation of appendicitis in children often requires CT. A focused CT scan that is limited to the lower abdomen/pelvis might help to reduce radiation exposure.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the position of the appendix relative to the umbilicus and derive a height-adjusted threshold for a focused CT that would identify most appendices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of children younger than 18 years who underwent a CT scan for suspected appendicitis. A pediatric radiologist determined the distance from the most cephalad portion of the appendix to the cente

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of UltraBLOX™ radiation attenuating hand cream during lengthy cardiac catheterization procedures in children.
BACKGROUND: The hands of interventional cardiologists receive high doses of radiation due to their proximity to the X-ray beam. Radiation attenuating gloves have about a 26% attenuation rate, but reduce dexterity and tactile sensation. The UltraBLOX™ cream is a new FDA-approved X-ray attenuating cream that can be applied to the operator's hands for radio-protection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Xerostomia (dry mouth) is one of the serious complications of head and neck irradiation and has a strong influence on a patient's activities of daily living. MR sialography with salivary secretion stimulation provides additional functional information (salivary secretion reserve) and may contribute to the evaluation of the severity of xerostomia and predict the risk of developing a radiation-induced xerostomia. This aim of the study was to analyze MR sialography as an objective tool to evaluate radiation-induced salivary injury.
