Measurement system for gesture characterization during chest physiotherapy act on newborn babies suffering from bronchiolitis.

Despite the lack of studies, chest physiotherapy (CPT) is widely used for newborn babies suffering from bronchiolitis. The limited data regarding this technique is mainly due to the difficulties making in situ measurements during the act. In the presented study, original instrumented gloves were designed and realized to perform measurements on babies during the CPT act. Custom-designed associated electronics and software were specially developed to monitor and record the forces applied by the physiotherapist's hands on the infant's chest and their trajectories. A prospective study, with babies…

Radiographic appearance of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) developing during Bucillamine treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.

Bucillamine, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, can have adverse effects, including lung injury. Development of interstitial pneumonia during treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can pose a difficult differential diagnosis between a direct manifestation of RA and a drug effect. Our review of previous reports suggested bucillamine-induced interstitial pneumonia in the patient described here, visualized by chest radiography and computed tomography based on patchy ground-glass opacities in a peribronchial or peripheral distribution, suggesting the appearance of bronchiolitis…

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis: comparative study of RSV groups A and B infected children.

The grouping characteristics of 29 respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) present in nasopharyngeal cells collected from hospitalized children with bronchiolitis during the 1990 RSV season in Porto Alegre, RS, were analysed. Twenty-two were grouped as belonging to group A and 7 to group B. Cyanosis, oxygen therapy, cough, length of hospitalization and atelectasis were observed to be more frequently found within group B infected children. Other clinical signs and symptoms were similarly found in both groups.

[A case of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia with positive anti Jo-1 antibody preceding polymyositis].

We describe a 58-year-old female with BOOP associated with polymyositis. Four months prior to the appearance of distinctive manifestation of polymyositis, she presented with a two-week history of cough, dyspnea on exertion, and fever. Chest roentgenogram demonstrated bilateral basal infiltrative shadows. The patient was treated with prednisolone, 30 mg/day because of progressive hypoxemia. Open lung biopsy revealed organizing masses of granulation tissue extending from the respiratory bronchioles into the intra-alveolar spaces, which was consistent with BOOP. She developed muscle pain in her l

Continuous Pulse Oximetry Analysis to Predict Outcomes in Young Infants With Bronchiolitis Presenting to the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Predictive analytics using continuously measured vital signs from bedside monitors has improved outcomes in critically ill children. We investigated whether continuous pulse oximetry data collected during emergency department (ED) evaluation can identify infants ≤90 days old with bronchiolitis at low risk of respiratory deterioration. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of infants ≤90 days old with bronchiolitis who presented to a tertiary-care pediatric ED from November 2021 to November 2025. Infants were identified using the ICD-10 code with manual e…

Application of machine learning to predict bronchiolitis severity in children: a single-centre retrospective cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Several severity scores have been developed to assess disease severity in infants with bronchiolitis, but they often lack objectivity and may not reliably reflect clinical outcomes. We performed a single-centre retrospective cohort study including infants younger than 12 months admitted with a clinical diagnosis of bronchiolitis over three epidemic seasons (2021-2024). Cluster analysis was applied to identify groups of infants with similar clinical patterns, which were subsequently mapped to severity levels. A machine learning (ML) model was then trained to predict these severity l…

Nirsevimab prophylaxis on pediatric intensive care hospitalization for severe acute bronchiolitis: a clinical and economic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute viral bronchiolitis is a common cause of admissions to pediatric intensive care units (PICUs), resulting in a significant organizational burden each winter. The recent introduction of generalized neonatal prophylactic therapies using Nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), has significantly reduced consultations and hospitalizations. However, its impact on the medico-economic aspects of the PICU remains poorly defined. METHODS: We analyzed all infants admitted to our unit for severe acute bronchiolitis over six consecutive ep…

Bronchiolitis, Regardless of Its Etiology and Severity, Is Associated With Increased Risk of Asthma: A Population-Based Study.

An association exists between severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-bronchiolitis and a subsequent increased risk of recurrent wheezing (RW) and asthma. However, a causal relationship remains unproven. Using a retrospective population-based cohort study (339 814 children), bronchiolitis during the first 2 years of life (regardless of etiology and severity) was associated with at least a 3-fold increased risk of RW/asthma at 2-4 years and an increased prevalence of asthma at ≥5 years of age. The risk was similar in children with mild bronchiolitis as in those with hospitalized RSV-bronchioli…

Clinical epidemiology and disease burden of bronchiolitis in hospitalized children in China: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis is a common acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) and the most frequent cause of hospitalization of infants and young children with ALRTI. Respiratory syncytial virus is the main pathogen that leads to severe bronchiolitis. The disease burden is relatively high. To date, few descriptions of the clinical epidemiology and disease burden of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis are available. This study reports the general clinical epidemiological characteristics and disease burden of bronchiolitis in hospitalized children in China. METHODS: This study inclu…

Risk Factors for the Development of Post-Infectious Bronchiolitis Obliterans in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO), one of the major complications of respiratory tract infection, is commonly underdiagnosed. To identify the risk groups that may develop PIBO and avoid misdiagnoses, we investigated the risk factors associated with the development of PIBO. We searched PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE databases for studies that included risk factors for the development of PIBO published from inception to 13 June 2022. We limited our search to studies that reported the estimates of odds ratio (OR), hazard ratio (HR), or relative risks for developing PIBO. A fixed-effect…

Integrated associations of nasopharyngeal and serum metabolome with bronchiolitis severity and asthma: A multicenter prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While infant bronchiolitis contributes to substantial acute (eg, severity) and chronic (eg, asthma development) morbidities, its pathobiology remains uncertain. We examined the integrated relationships of local (nasopharyngeal) and systemic (serum) responses with bronchiolitis morbidities. METHODS: In a multicenter prospective cohort study of infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis, we applied a network analysis approach to identify distinct networks (modules)-clusters of densely interconnected metabolites-of the nasopharyngeal and serum metabolome. We examined their individual and…
