Characteristics, treatment patterns, and residual cardiovascular risk of patients with a first acute myocardial infarction: A nationwide population-based cohort study in Norway.

There are few nationwide descriptive studies of longitudinal drug use and residual cardiovascular risk in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) in contemporary clinical practice. The objectives of this work were to describe characteristics and longitudinal cardiovascular drug use of patients with a first acute MI in Norway, and to quantify residual risks of cardiovascular events and death. Using nationwide health registries in Norway, we identified 43 750 adults with a first MI (2010 to 2015) and ≥1 prescription for antiplatelet medication. We described cardiovascular medication post-MI and

Polymorphisms of IL-4 and IL-4R are associated to some demographic characteristics of differentiated thyroid cancer patients but are not determinants of risk in the Brazilian population.

BACKGROUND: IL-4 is known to present abnormal expression in thyroid tumors and SNPs in the IL-4 and its receptor IL-4R genes are associated to risk and mortality of various types of cancer. METHODS: In order to evaluate their role in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), we investigated genetic frequencies of two IL-4 promoter SNPs (rs2070874 C>T, rs2243250 C>T) and four non-synonymous SNPs of the IL-4R gene (rs1805010 A>G, rs1805012 C>T, rs1805013 C>T, rs1801275 A>G) in 300 DTC patients matched to 300 controls. All patients were managed according to current guidelines and followed-up for a pe

Baseline characteristics of the study population in the Diabetes Atherosclerosis Intervention Study (DAIS). World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Study of Atherosclerosis in Diabetes.

The Diabetes Atherosclerosis Intervention Study (DAIS) is the first study designed a priori to determine whether correcting dyslipoproteinemia in type II diabetes will alter coronary atherosclerosis. It is a multinational randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial using micronized fenofibrate. Its primary end point is a change in the average mean segment diameter determined on coronary angiograms taken at the beginning and end of the treatment period. This study describes the population baseline characteristics. Four hundred eighteen individuals (305 men and 113 women) were randomized;

Leaf litter characteristic of low-income urban blocks improves population performance of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

Mosquito larvae feed on microbes growing on decomposing organic matter, which in cities is often limited to a finite amount of allochthonous leaf litter in artificial container habitats. Curiously, field surveys in US cities consistently document a mismatch between blocks with the greatest mosquito infestations and blocks where their plant resources are most plentiful, with variation shaped by socioeconomic factors. We gathered leaves characteristic of socioeconomically diverse blocks in Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, DC, to create lab mesocosms for two common mosquito species, Aedes alb
