OBJECTIVE: To compare the bonding efficacy of one-step versus two-step calcium fluoride (CaF₂) nanoparticle deposition and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The null hypotheses tested are as follows: 1) Nanoparticles deposited via the one-step strategy are less uniformly distributed than those deposited via the two-step strategy; 2) The one-step strategy does not release more confined water compared to the two-step strategy; 3) The one-step strategy is inferior to the two-step strategy in enhancing dentin bonding durability.
METHODS: A stable amorphous calcium fluoride (ACF) precursor s

OBJECTIVE: The functional monomer 10-MDP has been considered as one of the best performing functional monomers for dental adhesives. Different adhesives containing 10-MDP are commercially available, among which many so-called 'universal' adhesives. We hypothesize that the quality of the functional monomer 10-MDP in terms of purity may affect bonding performance.
METHODS: We therefore characterized three different 10-MDP versions (10-MDP_KN provided by Kuraray Noritake; 10-MDP_PCM provided by PCM; 10-MDP_DMI provided by DMI) using NMR, and analyzed their ability to form 10-MDP_Ca salts on dent

Many dental practitioners do not use adhesive bridges because of concerns over high failure rates. Techniques for these restorations should be based on the fundamental principles of bridge design which require rigid, accurately fitting frameworks and careful control of the occlusion. The abutments generally require little if any tooth preparation. Greater security will result from more extensive coverage of abutment teeth: the routine use of relative axial tooth movement is a predictable method for creating the space that this approach requires.

BACKGROUND: Severe periodontal furcation invasion has long been a treatment dilemma for the clinician. Many techniques have been advocated in the treatment of multi-rooted posterior teeth ranging from conventional scaling and root planing (SRP), apically positioned flaps, root amputations, root resections, tunnel procedures, guided tissue regeneration, and restorations. The keys to success depend on the clinician's ability to access the furcation to remove local factors and create an environment that enhances the patient's own hygiene efforts. Long-term success in treating teeth with furcation

OBJECTIVE: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is widely used as an effective pulp-capping material. However, limited scientific evidence is available regarding the optimal restorative material to be placed over MTA. Additionally, the influence of MTA's highly alkaline environment on adjacent restorative materials remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the endurance of various restorative materials, namely a conventional glass-ionomer (GI), a resin-modified glass-ionomer (RMGI), and a UDMA- and BisGMA-based composite, under water and alkaline conditions, and to examine the interfacial char

Several reports have indicated that resin bond strengths to noncarious sclerotic cervical dentine are lower than bonds made to normal dentine. This is thought to be due to tubule occlusion by mineral salts, preventing resin tag formation. The purpose of this review was to critically examine what is known about the structure of this type of dentine. Recent transmission electron microscopy revealed that in addition to occlusion of the tubules by mineral crystals, many parts of wedge-shaped cervical lesions contain a hypermineralised surface that resists the etching action of both self-etching pr

OBJECTIVES: Restorative materials are constantly subjected to thermal challenges in the oral environment. Such challenges, if significant, can have unfavorable effects on the margins of restorations in terms of the seal between the material and the tooth structure. This study aimed to assess the Coefficient of Dimensional Change (CDC) of tooth-colored restorative materials.
METHODS: Five cylindrical specimens (6 mm x 4 mm) were made (using a stainless steel mold) of each of the following: the compomers Dyract AP (Dentsply), or F2000 Compomer (3M); a resin composite, Z100 MP (3M); a resin-modi

Limited information is available about chemical bonding of cobalt-chromium alloys for resin-retained fixed partial dentures. This study evaluated the effect of acidic primers on the bonding of luting agents joined to a cobalt-chromium alloy. Disk alloy specimens were bonded with eight combinations of five primers and two luting agents. Shear bond strengths were determined before and after thermocycling. The effect of priming on bond strength varied among the combinations of primer and luting agent. In particular, after thermocycling three groups demonstrated greater bond strengths than the oth
