Three-month-old male Wistar rats exposed intermittently (5 days weekly, 6 hr/day) to furfuryl alcohol vapor at 1 (25 ppm), 2 (50 ppm), or 4 mumol/liter (100 ppm) for 4 to 16 weeks were lighter than controls at the end of the experiment at the two higher concentration levels. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a severe inflammatory disorder associated with metabolic reprogramming and mitochondrial dysfunction. A 3-year-old Labrador retriever was presented to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy. While performing a pre-operative epidural, thiopental was inadvertently administered into the epidural space. Carboxylate substituents added to the salicylate ring increase the effectiveness of a variety of aspirins and diaspirins in acylating hemoglobin. Even more effective are a series of monoesters of dicarboxylate derivatives. Bis(5-carbomethoxysalicyl)fumarate and -succinate at 5 mM concentrations modify approximately 100% of the hemoglobin in solution and should alter the aggregation behavior of sickle hemoglobin.

Biochemical, electron microscopic observations in muscle and liver of an infant dying at 20 months of age of a mitochondrial myopathy are described. Biochemical analysis of tissues revealed low levels of free, esterified and total carnitine and marked decrease of succinic-dehydrogenase activity while cytochrome c-oxidase was normal. The dynamics of avirulant lac+KCP- hybrids Sh. flexneri multiplication was investigated in minimal medium in the presence of some tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates (fumarate, succinate, malate) and pyruvate. It was established that in spite of the loss of virulence in the rate of the multiplication of the hybrid strains, in comparison with that of the virulent recipient strains of Sh. flexneri, considerable differences were not observed.

Cytochemical tuberculin-associated shifts along with their prognostic evaluation were studied in 30 patients with silicosis and silicotuberculosis with intrathoracic adenopathy. The study revealed that a decrease of alkaline phosphatase activity of neutrophils, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase lymphocytes could serve as an early indicator of tuberculosis process in the pulmonary tissue and intrathoracic lymph nodes.

The administration of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds produced inhibition of the activity of succinic dehydrogenase, adenosine triphosphatase and acid phosphattase accompanied by cellular degeneration with complete absence of spermatocytes in the testis of rabbits. The biochemical and histological changes were more marked in the animals treated with the trivalent chromium than those exposed to hexavalent chromium and were progressive with the duration of exposure.
