Two-body wear resistance and fatigue survival of new Y-TZP and ATZ ceramics made with a new slip-casting method.

BACKGROUND: Dental zirconium oxide restorations are milled from pre-sintered blocks or disks which are produced either with high isostatic pressure (HIP) or, simpler, a slurry technique. The objective was to perform a fatigue test and an in vitro wear simulation of two ceramics, yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramic and a hybrid zirconium oxide-aluminum oxide ceramic, (ATZ) both produced either the classical way using high isostatic pressure (HIP, control) or with a slurry technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten discs/group were subjected to a cyclic biaxial fatigue

Probing lubricated sliding wear properties of HDPE/UHMWPE hybrid bionanocomposite.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and its derivatives have been clinically used as an acetabular liner material in total hip joint replacement (THR) over last six decades. Despite significant efforts, the longevity of UHMWPE implants is still impaired due to their compromised tribological performance, leading to osteolysis and aseptic loosening. The present study aims to critically evaluate and analyze the tribological performance, of the next generation acetabular liner material, that is, a chemically modified graphene oxide (GO) reinforced HDPE/UHMWPE (HU) bionanocomposite (H

Fabrication and in vitro study of 3D novel porous hydroxyapatite/polyether ether ketone surface nanocomposite.

The unique characteristics of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) including low elastic modulus, high mechanical strength, and biocompatibility have made it an attractive alternative for the metallic biomaterials. However, its bioinert property is always the main concern, which could lead to poor osseointegration and subsequent clinical failure of the implant. Changing the surface structure to porous structure and mixing it with bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) are the common methods, which could be used to enhance the properties of the PEEK-based implants. In this study, friction stir processing was u

Deep Subwavelength Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Silicon as a Novel Multifunctional Biosensing Platform.

Strong light localization inside the nanoscale gaps provides remarkable opportunities for creation of various medical and biosensing platforms stimulating an active search for inexpensive and easily scalable fabrication at a sub-100 nm resolution. In this paper, self-organized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) with the shortest ever reported periodicity of 70 ± 10 nm were directly imprinted on the crystalline Si wafer upon its direct femtosecond-laser ablation in isopropanol. Appearance of such a nanoscale morphology was explained by the formation of a periodic topography on t

Distribution of microcrack surface density in the human otic capsule.

BACKGROUND: The bony otic capsule is comprised of highly mineralized and dense compact bone. It is rarely remodelled and degenerative changes, therefore, accumulate around the inner ear. It is also a predilection site for the pathological remodelling seen in otosclerosis. Morphometric studies have documented increased numbers of dead osteocytes and microcracks in the human otic capsule. Microcracks may disrupt the lacuno-canalicular network and cause osteocyte apoptosis ultimately breaking up the perilabyrinthine bone signalling pathways and dynamics. This may be important to understand the pa

Surface Treatment and Implant Bone Interface: A Systematic Literature Review.

In the present scenario, dental implants have proven to be a very reliable and popular treatment option for partial and completely edentulous arches. The biological, chemical, local, clinician, and implant related factors determine sequence of bone turnover that eventually enhances the success of implant therapy. The positioning of implant is followed by an inflammatory process that results in de novo bone formation and deposition on the implant surface. Pure titanium is commercially the prime material of choice for an implant. The implant surface can be chemically altered by a change in manuf

Antigen down format photoelectrochemical analysis supported by fullerene functionalized Sn3O4.

Herein, a smart competitive-type photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on an antigen-down (Ag-down) format for procalcitonin (PCT) detection is proposed. A fullerene sensitized flower-like Sn3O4 nano-structure is used as the photoactive platform, and FeS2 is labeled on the secondary antibody as a signal adjusting element. The sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity and great stability.

Comprehensive Insight into the Protein-Surface Biomolecular Interactions on a Smart Material: Complex Formation between Poly(N-vinyl Caprolactam) and Heme Protein.

Proteins are naturally occurring biopolymers that exhibit a wide range of functional applications. Meticulous knowledge about biomolecular interactions between polymeric biomaterials and body fluids or proteins is essential for designing biospecific surfaces and understanding protein-polymer interactions beyond existing limitations. In this regard, we studied the comparative effect of heme proteins such as cytochrome c, myoglobin, and hemoglobin on the phase behavior of poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) aqueous solution and demonstrated various biomolecular interactions in the polymer-protein c

Microfabricated porous layer open tubular (PLOT) column.

Development of micro gas chromatography (μGC) is aimed at rapid and in situ analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for environmental protection, industrial monitoring, and toxicology. However, due to the lack of appropriate microcolumns and associated stationary phases, current μGC is unable to separate highly volatile chemicals such as methane, methanol, and formaldehyde, which are of great interest for their high toxicity and carcinogenicity. This inability has significantly limited μGC field applicability. To address this deficiency, this paper reports the development and characteriz

Influence of environmental conditions in bovine bone ablation by ultrafast laser.

Ultrafast lasers are promising tools for surgical applications requiring precise tissue cutting. Shallow ablation depth and slow rate as well as collateral damage are common barriers limiting the use of laser in clinical applications. Localized cooling with water and/or air jet is known to reduce collateral thermal damage. We studied the influence of environmental conditions including air, compressed air flow, still water and water jet on ablation depth, ablation rate and surface morphology on bovine bone samples with an 800 nm femtosecond laser. At 15 J/cm2 , no thermal effect was observed by

Surface Roughness and Substrate Stiffness Synergize To Drive Cellular Mechanoresponse.

Material surface topographic features have been shown to be crucial for tissue regeneration and surface treatment of implanted devices. Many biomaterials were investigated with respect to the response of cells on surface roughness. However, some conclusions even conflicted with each other due to the unclear interplay of surface topographic features and substrate elastic features as well as the lack of mechanistic studies. Herein, wide-scale surface roughness gradient hydrogels, integrating the surface roughness from nanoscale to microscale with controllable stiffness, were developed via soft l
