Pneumocystis and Histoplasma infections in wild animals from the Amazon region of Brazil.

Routine examination of tissues from wild forest rodents from Amapá, north Brazil, revealed Pneumocystis carinii in lung smears from a newly captured Oryzomys capito (Cricetidae). Acute, fatal infections with this parasite are also recorded in a number of captive "coatimundis", Nasua narica (Carnivora: Procyonidae) and a sloth, Bradypus tridactylus (Edentata). Pneumocystis was also encountered in lung smears from a newly captured and apparently healthy sloth, Choloepus didactylus. The presence of infection in newly captured animals leads us to believe that the fatal, fulminating pneumocystosis

[Animal bite injuries caused by domestic and wild animals: retrospective analysis and development of a prognostic score].

BACKGROUND: The current guidelines on injuries caused by animal bites recommend surgical debridement and antibiotic treatment. Bite wounds generally lead to high-risk infections due to deep skin lesions. However, bite wounds may differ dramatically in terms of depth and involvement of different anatomic structures. A prognostic classification regarding depth or severity is only available for facial injuries in paediatric patients, provided by Lackmann's score. In this study, we assessed prognostic factors and developed a prospective score for general animal bite injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS

Using wild-animal tracking for detecting and managing disease outbreaks.

Zoonotic diseases increasingly threaten human and wildlife populations, driving a global rise in mass-mortality outbreaks, including the ongoing avian influenza panzootic in wildlife and zoonotic spillovers such as the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in humans. We introduce a new general framework for detecting and managing pathogen outbreaks using animal movement and sensory biologging data to enhance early outbreak detection, provide near-real-time updates on sentinel host health and mortality, and reveal infection-induced behavioral changes. Integrating past and near-real-time biologging wit

Interactions between reproductive biology and microbiomes in wild animal species.

Many parts of the animal body harbor microbial communities, known as animal-associated microbiomes, that affect the regulation of physiological functions. Studies in human and animal models have demonstrated that the reproductive biology and such microbiomes also interact. However, this concept is poorly studied in wild animal species and little is known about the implications to fertility, parental/offspring health, and survival in natural habitats. The objective of this review is to (1) specify the interactions between animals' reproductive biology, including reproductive signaling, pregnanc

Types of pesticides involved in domestic and wild animal poisoning in Italy.

Data obtained from samples of poisoned domestic and wild animals sent for toxicological evaluation during the period between 2005 and 2014 have been analyzed. Among the 4606 tested samples, the majority of which were collected in the northern regions of Italy, 2006 (43.55%) were found positive for pesticides. Analytical detections were performed via solvent extraction followed by separation and chromatographic characterization and all the methods applied for the toxicological investigations were developed by IZSLER. Insecticides, mainly represented by acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (carbamate

Neurovirulence of wild and laboratory Junin virus strains in animal hosts.

The neurovirulence of Candid #1 and XJCL3 laboratory strains and CbalV4454 and CbaFHA5069 wild strains of Junin virus was studied in albino mice, guinea pigs, and a South American wild rodent, Calomys musculinus, of different ages inoculated by the intracerebral route. Infectivity in brain and organs, lethality, and neuropathological lesions were determined. The laboratory and wild strains showed similar neurovirulence only in 2-day-old mice. The neurovirulence of laboratory strains decreased with the age of the animal, and the Candid #1 strain affected only 2-day-old mice. In guinea pigs, the

An emerging public health problem: acquired carbapenemase-producing microorganisms are present in food-producing animals, their environment, companion animals and wild birds.

Worldwide, the emergence and global spread of microorganisms with acquired carbapenemases is of great concern. The reservoirs for such organisms are increasing, not only in hospitals, but also in the community and environment. A new and important development is the presence of such organisms in livestock, companion animals and wildlife. During the last three years, carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. (VIM-1 producers) and Acinetobacter spp. (producing OXA-23 and NDM-1) in livestock animals (poultry, cattle and swine) and their environment have been reported. In addition,

Survey of parasitic fauna data from wild animals through coproparasitological diagnosis in Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The proximity between people and their domestic animals with wild animal populations can result in the spread of diseases with a significant impact on public health. Infection by parasites in wildlife is considered an important bioindicator of the current state of ecosystems, and studying the epidemiology of these infections is essential for a better understanding of natural foci. However, research on parasites in southern Brazil, especially in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), is considered incipient. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the parasitic fauna of wild animals in the

Molecular Epidemiology of Leptospira Serogroup Pomona Infections Among Wild and Domestic Animals in Spain.

Strains of Leptospira serogroup Pomona are known to cause widespread animal infections in many parts of the world. Forty-three isolates retrieved from domestic animals and wild small mammals suggest that serogroup Pomona is epidemiologically relevant in Spain. This is supported by the high prevalence of serovar Pomona antibodies in livestock and wild animals. In this study, the strains were serologically and genetically characterized in an attempt to elucidate their epidemiology. Serological typing was based on the microscopic agglutination test but molecular typing involved species-specific p

Evaluating the risk of pathogen transmission from wild animals to domestic pigs in Australia.

Wild animals contribute to endemic infection in livestock as well as the introduction, reintroduction and maintenance of pathogens. The source of introduction of endemic diseases to a piggery is often unknown and the extent of wildlife contribution to such local spread is largely unexplored. The aim of the current study was to quantitatively assess the probability of domestic pigs being exposed to different pathogens from wild animals commonly found around commercial piggeries in Australia. Specifically, this study aims to quantify the probability of exposure to the pathogens Escherichia coli,

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. I. Oestrus ovis in sheep.

Separate groups of 3 oestrid-free lambs were exposed to infestation on irrigated pasture for periods of approximalely 33 days each over30 months, and on dry-land pasture for approxomately 42 days over a period of 18 months. With some exceptions, the lambs slaughtered from October-June were found to be infested with Oestrus ovis while, with one exception, those slaughtered from July-September were free. A minimum of 4 sheeps' heads, obtained weekly over 24 months from the Pretoria Municipal Abattoir, was examined for infestation. Of a total of 542 heads examined, 73,4% were infested, having a m

Morphological and molecular characterization of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) isolated from wild animals undergoing rehabilitation.

Ticks are major global ectoparasites and vectors of zoonotic pathogens affecting wildlife conservation and public health. Wild animals can harbor ticks in their natural habitats or acquire them during rehabilitation, playing a critical role in the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases. This study aimed to morphologically and molecularly characterize ticks collected from wild animals at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Antioquia, Colombia. Between 2023 and 2024, 245 ticks were incidentally collected from diverse wildlife hosts. Morphological identification was performed on 193 specimens, and m

Prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Australian wild birds, native wildlife, livestock and domestic animals.

The ESKAPE pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, poses a serious threat to medical, veterinary, and agricultural practices globally, and thus has been declared a “Priority Pathogen” by the World Health Organisation. Understanding P. aeruginosa prevalence in wild bird populations, livestock, and domestic animals is vital for evaluating potential infection reservoirs. In this study, we screened 1,669 DNA samples obtained between 2010 and 2023 from healthy and diseased wild birds (n = 1,101), domestic animals (n = 269), livestock (n = 133), kangaroos (n = 39), and koalas (n = 127) from Southeast Quee
