Very few epidemiologic data on reflux oesophagitis are available. To estimate the incidence of reflux oesophagitis, all reports (n = 6733) of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed in patients aged > or = 16 years and living in a defined catchment area of 226,776 inhabitants were examined during a 2-year period. The incidence of reflux oesophagitis was calculated to be 120 per 100,000 inhabitants, and most of the incident cases (88%) were uncomplicated oesophagitis with single or multiple erosions. This article reviews and analyzes studies on the utilization of care and patterns of care in psychiatric care organizations with a defined catchment area responsibility. Eight studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Thirty-six children with new-onset local tuberculosis were followed up to assess its causes and the ways of its detection. The predominant form of primary tuberculosis was that of inthrathoracic lymph nodes. Six examinees had complicated tuberculosis, the latter being attended by circumscribed lymphogenic semination in 5 of them and by the bronchopulmonary syndrome in one. Examination of 400 workers in Bratsk aluminium plant proved respiratory diseases formation to be influenced by both occupational factors and various toxic chemicals that are released into atmosphere by other industrial polluters. Structure of respiratory diseases is represented mainly by diffuse pneumoconiosis caused by toxic and dust factors. Prophylaxis of those diseases should be aimed not only to better work conditions, but also to specify measures improving regional ecologic situation.
