Minimum number of spermatozoa required for normal fertility after deep intrauterine insemination in non-sedated sows.

A fibreoptic endoscope procedure for non-surgical deep intrauterine insemination in non-sedated sows has been reported. However, the endoscope is an expensive and fragile instrument, and is unsuitable for use under field conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum number of spermatozoa required to maintain optimal fertility using a flexible catheter (1.8 m in length, 4 mm in diameter) for deep intrauterine insemination in 2-6 parity non-sedated sows. Crossbred sows were treated with eCG 24 h after weaning and with hCG 72 h later to induce oestrus. Deep intrauterine inseminat

The effect of body position, sedation, and thoracic bandaging on functional residual capacity in healthy deep-chested dogs.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of body position, chest wrap, and sedation on functional residual capacity (FRC) in 6 healthy dogs. Functional residual capacity was determined by helium dilution (re-breathing) whilst in different clinically relevant conditions. These conditions included the standing (sternal) and lateral positions in unsedated dogs and then again both standing and lateral following chest bandaging, and sedation with acepromazine, IV and butorphanol, IV. The mean FRC at each measurement point was determined, as was the change in FRC (delta FRC) from one

Early Deep Sedation Practices Worsened During the Pandemic Among Adult Patients Without COVID-19: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence that patients with COVID-19 were treated with sustained deep sedation during the pandemic. However, it is unknown whether such guideline-discordant care had spillover effects to patients without COVID-19. RESEARCH QUESTION: Did patterns of early deep sedation change during the pandemic for patients on mechanical ventilation without COVID-19? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We used electronic health record data from 4,237 patients who were intubated without COVID-19. We compared sedation practices in the first 48 h after intubation across prepandemic (Febru…

Effect of moderate versus deep sedation on recovery following outpatient gastroscopy in older patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although gastrointestinal endoscopy with sedation is increasingly performed in older patients, the optimal level of sedation remains open to debate. In this study, our objective was to compare the effects of moderate sedation (MS) and deep sedation (DS) on recovery following outpatient gastroscopy in elderly patients. METHODS: In this randomized, partially blinded, controlled trial, we randomly divided 270 patients older than 60 years who were scheduled for elective outpatient gastroscopy into the MS or DS group based on the Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation (MO…

Prospective randomized evaluation of transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring during complex electrophysiological procedures under deep sedation: the TRACES trial.

BACKGROUND: The field of interventional electrophysiology is rapidly growing. For safe and efficient procedures sedation is needed for patient comfort and immobility. However, sedative and analgesic agents can induce respiratory depression, risking hypercapnia, hypoxia, and hypotension. This study evaluates the impact of adding transcutaneous carbon-dioxide (CO2) monitoring to standard monitoring practices in electrophysiological procedures under deep sedation. METHODS: This prospective, randomized study at Ulm University Heart Center included 726 patients undergoing treatment under deep seda…
