Crassostrea virginica is a well-established bivalve species for biomonitoring persistent organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in aquatic environments. Differing biomonitoring methods employing either wild oysters inhabiting sites of interest or naïve cultured oysters deployed to sites for extended periods can be used for site evaluations. However, important differences in total contaminant concentrations accumulated have been observed between the wild and transplanted groups. Furthermore, although rearing cultured triploid oysters is widely popular in commercial fa

The expression of nuclear and mitochondrial genes, as well as their coordinated control, regulates cell proliferation, individual development, and disease in animals. However, the potential coregulation between nuclear and mitochondrial genes is unclear in triploid fishes. The two triploids (R2C and RC2) with distinct mitochondrial genomes but similar nuclear genomes exhibit different embryonic development times and growth rates. They are an excellent model for studying how nuclear and mitochondrial genes coordinate. Here, we performed the mRNA-seq of four stages of embryonic development (blas

Despite their suitability for studying evolution, many conifer species have large and repetitive giga-genomes (16-31 Gbp) that create hurdles to producing high coverage SNP data sets that capture diversity from across the entirety of the genome. Due in part to multiple ancient whole genome duplication events, gene family expansion and subsequent evolution within Pinaceae, false diversity from the misalignment of paralog copies creates further challenges in accurately and reproducibly inferring evolutionary history from sequence data. Here, we leverage the cost-saving benefits of pool-seq and e

Recent studies have demonstrated the value of ancillary techniques, including p57 immunohistochemistry and short tandem repeat genotyping, f … les in all regions, with variable paternal:maternal allele ratios (usually >2:1); pure androgenetic diploidy was identified in those cases with a sufficiently sized villous component having trophoblastic hyperplasia and features of CHM. Fluorescence in situ hybridization demonstrated uniform diploidy in 7 cases, including 4 of 5 tested cases with trophobla …

BACKGROUND: Dioecy, a sexual system of single-sexual (gynoecious/androecious) individuals, is rare in flowering plants. This rarity may be a result of the frequent transition from dioecy into systems with co-sexual individuals.
RESULTS: In this study, co-sexual expression (monoecy and hermaphroditic development), previously thought to be polyploid-specific in Diospyros species, was identified in the diploid D. oleifeara historically. We characterized potential genetic mechanisms that underlie the dissolution of dioecy to monoecy and andro(gyno)monoecy, based on multiscale genome-wide investig

Telomerase activity has been found in the somatic tissues of rainbow trout. The enzyme is essential for maintaining telomere length but also assures homeostasis of the fish organs, playing an important role during tissue regeneration. The unique morphological and physiological characteristics of triploid rainbow trout, when compared to diploid specimens, make them a promising model for studies concerning telomerase activity. Thus, in this study, we examined the expression of the Tert gene in various organs of subadult and adult diploid and triploid rainbow trout females. Upregulated Tert mRNA

Non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) is a clinical entity induced by the ingestion of gluten that leads to intestinal and/or extraintestinal symptoms, and is diagnosed when celiac disease and wheat allergy have been ruled out. In addition to gluten, other grains' components, including amylase trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) and fermentable short-chain carbohydrates (FODMAPs), may trigger symptoms in NCWS subjects. Several studies suggest that, compared with tetraploid and hexaploid modern wheats, ancient diploid wheats species could possess a lower immunogenicity for subjects suffering from NCWS. Thi

Hematology is a simple but reliable method to determine the influence of environmental stressors on the physiology and performance of teleost fish. Understanding the detailed impacts of elevated temperature on the hematology of fish can help us to evaluate fish responses to climate change. Therefore, cellular and biochemical changes in peripheral blood were investigated in diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) brook trout and in 2n rainbow trout exposed to 20 °C for 32 days in comparison to fish acclimated to 9 °C. Additionally, survival and growth rates and the relative mRNA expression of heat-shock

BACKGROUND: Turkey is one of the major exporters of mandarins in the Mediterranean region. Seedlessness in citrus, which is one of the most desired fruit quality traits, especially in fresh mandarin export markets, can be obtained via triploidy as in many fruit species. Triploid plants can be recovered by 2x × 2x hybridizations in citrus, as well as 2x × 4x and 4x × 2x crosses. Hence, we aimed to develop local triploid hybrids by using the embryo rescue technique in five crosses using eight different citrus varieties in the present study.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Embryos isolated from abortive se

An intriguing outcome of hybridisation is the emergence of clonally and hemiclonally reproducing hybrids, that can sustain, reproduce, and lead to the emergence of polyploid forms. However, the maintenance of diploid and polyploid hybrid complexes in natural populations remains unresolved. We selected water frogs from the Pelophylax esculentus complex to study how diploid and triploid hybrids, which reproduce hemiclonally via hybridogenesis, are maintained in natural populations. During gametogenesis in diploid hybrids, one of the parental genomes is eliminated, and the remaining genome is end

Brettanomyces bruxellensis is a unicellular fungus of increasing industrial and scientific interest over the past 15 years. Previous studies revealed high genotypic diversity amongst B. bruxellensis strains as well as strain-dependent phenotypic characteristics. Genomic assemblies revealed that some strains harbour triploid genomes and based upon prior genotyping it was inferred that a triploid population was widely dispersed across Australian wine regions. We performed an intraspecific diversity genotypic survey of 1488 B. bruxellensis isolates from 29 countries, 5 continents and 9 different

Influence of waterborne butachlor (BUC), a commonly used pesticide, on morphometric, biochemical, and molecular biomarkers was evaluated in juvenile, full sibling, diploid and triploid African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Fish were exposed for 21 days to one of three concentrations of BUC [mean measured µg/L: 22, 44 or 60]. Unexposed (control) triploids were heavier and longer and had higher visceral-somatic index (VSI) than diploids. Also, they had lighter liver weight (HSI) and showed lower transcript levels of brain gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), aromatase (cyp191b) and fushi taraz

The effect of ploidy on scale-cover pattern in linear ornamental (koi) common carp Cyprinus carpio was investigated. To obtain diploid and triploid linear fish, eggs taken from a leather C. carpio female (genotype ssNn) and sperm taken from a scaled C. carpio male (genotype SSnn) were used for the production of control (no shock) and heat-shocked progeny. In heat-shocked progeny, the 2 min heat shock (40° C) was applied 6 min after insemination. Diploid linear fish (genotype SsNn) demonstrated a scale-cover pattern typical for this category with one even row of scales along lateral line and fe
