Experiments with several patients suffering from stress incontinence have shown that indirect stimulation of the levator ani with a vaginal stimulator and especially of the anal sphincter with an anal stimulator affects the urethral sphincter in the same way as direct stimulation. These findings are significant since they enable us to avoid the use of implantable stimulators by substituting external ones. External stimulation is worth trying in all cases of stress incontinence, where other conservative measures have failed. In our cases the results have been very satisfactory.

This is a review of the literature on the main neuromodulation techniques, focusing on the possibility of introducing sensory threshold ULFTENS into them. Electro neuromodulation techniques have been in use for many years as promising methods of therapy for cognitive and emotional disorders. One of the most widely used forms of stimulation for orofacial pain is transcutaneous trigeminal stimulation on three levels: supraorbital area, dorsal surface of the tongue, and anterior skin area of the tragus. The purpose of this review is to trigger interest on using dental ULFTENS as an additional tri

BACKGROUND: Skin sensation is the primary factor limiting the intensity of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). It is well established that different waveforms generate different sensations, yet transcranial stimulation has been limited to a relatively small number of prototypical waveforms.
OBJECTIVE: We explore whether alternative stimulation waveforms could substantially reduce skin sensation and thus allow for stronger intensities in tES.
METHODS: We systematically tested a range of waveforms in a series of 6 exploratory experiments stimulating human adults on the forearm and in on

Evolving research has provided evidence that noninvasive electrical stimulation (ES) of the eye may be a promising therapy for either preserving or restoring vision in several retinal and optic nerve diseases. In this review, we focus on minimally invasive strategies for the delivery of ES and accordingly summarize the current literature on transcorneal, transorbital, and transpalpebral ES in both animal experiments and clinical studies. Various mechanisms are believed to underlie the effects of ES, including increased production of neurotrophic agents, improved chorioretinal blood circulation

Ghrelin is a peptide hormone produced mainly by the stomach and has widespread physiological functions including increase in appetite. The stimulation of the ghrelin system represents a potential therapeutic approach in various disorders characterized by deficient ghrelin signaling or by low appetite. This stimulation may be achieved via pharmacological targeting of the ghrelin receptor with synthetic ghrelin or ghrelin mimetics or via increased endogenous ghrelin production. Recently, it was demonstrated that gastric electrical stimulation (GES) with Enterra parameters results in increased gh

Our understanding of motor learning, neuroplasticity, and functional recovery after the occurrence of brain lesions has increased considerably. New findings in basic neuroscience have provided an impetus for research in motor rehabilitation. Several prospective studies have shown that repeated motor practice and motor activity in a real world environment have a favorable effect on motor recovery in stroke patients. Electrical stimulation can be applied in a variety of ways to the hemiparetic upper extremity following a stroke. In particular, electromyography (EMG)-triggered electrical muscle s

OBJECTIVE: Poor functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury is generally attributed to irreversible target atrophy. In rats, we addressed the functional outcomes of prolonged neuronal separation from targets (chronic axotomy for up to 1 year) and atrophy of Schwann cells (SCs) in distal nerve stumps, and whether electrical stimulation (ES) accelerates axon regeneration. In carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients with severe axon degeneration and release surgery, we asked whether ES accelerates muscle reinnervation.
METHODS: Reinnervated motor unit (MUs) and regenerating neuron numbers wer

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) refers to electrical stimulation of muscles in order to improve the impaired motor function. This is achieved by activating skeletal muscles with constant frequency trains of stimulations. This method has been found useful in various neurological disorders like hemiplegia, foot drop and paraplegia including spinal cord injuries. The first half of this review focuses on the broad clinical applications of functional electrical stimulation, its mechanism of action and the complications of this mode of therapy. Advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) is characteri

BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence is a particularly embarrassing and distressing condition with significant medical, social and economic implications. Electrical stimulation has been used with apparent success in the treatment of faecal incontinence. However, standards of treatment are still lacking and the magnitude of alleged benefits has yet to be established.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of electrical stimulation for the treatment of faecal incontinence in adults.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group Specialised Trials Register (searched 13 March 2007) and r

Electric and electromagnetic fields regulate extra-cellular matrix synthesis and stimulate repair of fractures and nonunions. Studies of electric and electromagnetic fields suggest they (1) regulate proteoglycan and collagen synthesis and increase bone formation in models of endochondral ossification, (2) accelerate bone formation and repair, (3) increase union rates in fractures previously refractory to healing, and (4) produce results equivalent to bone grafts. Electric and electromagnetic fields regulate the expression of genes in connective tissue cells for extra-cellular matrix proteins,

The use of electricity to stimulate nerves or muscles is nothing new. In the 18th century Galvani recognized that electricity could be converted into "nerve force". Numerous applications of electrical stimulation have been explored, most notably cardiac pacing, cochlear implants or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) units for pain control. Spinal cord injury (SCI), with its "transecting lesion" that leaves intact nervous system below the injury completely disconnected from the centers that exert motor control provides the ideal opportunity for electrical stimulation use. The goal of this paper was the development of an optimized stimulation pattern of leg muscles that would allow paraplegic subjects to perform the movement of pedaling and thereby to drive a tricycle by means of functional electrical stimulation (FES). To obtain maximum average power output with minimum muscle force, the start, duration and amplitude of the stimulation signal applied to the individual muscles had to be optimized depending on the pedaling frequency. For the basic theoretical investigations the rider-tricycle system was modeled as a rigid body system on which the muscle forces ar

In 73 patients composing 84 ears, with persistent decompensated tinnitus and sensorineural deafness, tinnitus suppression was attempted with low frequency, low ampere transdermal electrical stimulation (TDES). The causes of tinnitus were presbyacusis, unknown aetiology, Noise exposure, otosclerosis, ototoxic drugs, Endolymphatic hydrops, labyrinthitis and post head injury. Reduction of tinnitus was achieved in 38 of 84 ears. Results were achieved in patients with the following order. 1) Unknown aetiology 53.3% 2) Ototoxic drugs 50% 3) Presbyacusis 45% 4) Labyrinthitis 40% 5) Post head injury,

The investigations of biologic actions (in vitro, animal, and human) demonstrated several effects that help explain why electrical stimulation works. Based on the latest scientific understanding of the wound healing process, one would expect that a therapy that decreases edema, debrides necrotic tissue, attracts neutrophils and macrophages, stimulates receptor sites for growth factors, stimulates growth of fibroblasts and granulation tissue, increases blood flow, stimulates neurite growth, induces epidermal cell migration, prevents postischemic oxygen radical-mediated damage, inhibits bacteria

Bilateral deafness can occur in patients with Menière's disease who have undergone a labyrinthectomy in one ear. To investigate the feasibility of a cochlear implant in the labyrinthectomized ear, promontory electrical testing by transtympanic needle was performed in six patients who had undergone a unilateral transmastoid labyrinthectomy 6 weeks to 5 years previously. All patients had a behavioral response to the stimulus, and each described a different pitch percept with the four frequencies used. Five of the patients demonstrated an electrically evoked middle latency response. These data ar
