The Skills and Employment Opportunities Project: report of an evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: the research was designed to evaluate the success of a Project set up to find employment or training in ordinary firms or organisations for people with disabilities. METHODS: three main sources of data were used: the Project's data-base, which included information on client 'outcomes'; postal questionnaires and interviews with Project clients; postal questionnaire and interviews with referrers to the Project. RESULTS: the rate of referral to the Project vastly exceeded expectations. According to the Project's 'outcome' categories, 66% of the clients were successfully placed, and …

Disclosing HIV status and sexual orientation to employers.

Seropositive gay and bisexual men who reveal their sexual orientation or HIV/AIDS status to their employer risk discriminatory reprisals. However, non-disclosure may limit potential social, emotional, and tangible support. Among our sample of 389 seropositive gay and bisexual men employed in the US, 52% were 'out' to their employer and 35% had disclosed their serostatus to him or her. Among gay men, employer awareness of their sexual orientation was related to their being European American (vs Latino or African American), being HIV-seropositive for more than 4 years, and having a gay or bisexu

Employment in family planning and women's status in Bangladesh.

This study investigates how employment in family planning affects the status of community workers. The focus is on three critical variables: prestige, professional status, and social influence. The data are derived from a focus-group study conducted in 1987-88 in the Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning Project in Matlab, Bangladesh. Focus-group sessions were held with community workers, their husbands, community leaders, and community women. Results show that although community workers initially faced intense hostility in the community, they succeeded in maintaining the prestige that…

The impact of circularity and circular strategies on firm employment.

In the past, research on a circular economy often focused on economic and ecological sustainability, while research on the social side of circularity has stepped up recently. The circular economy is often framed as a way to not only foster competitiveness and resource security, but also create opportunities to boost employment and provide high-quality, local jobs. This study aims to be the first to empirically interrogate this labor-enhancing assumption by using advanced Natural Language Processing in a unique combination with cross-sectional regression analysis for all private companies in Be…

The Roles of Gender and Employment Status in Abdication Decisions.

Abdication-the act of giving up a choice to another person-has been shown to prompt reciprocal generosity (Kardas et al., 2018), but it is not clear whether men or women are more likely to engage in abdication. The present research utilized a gift card scenario adapted from Kardas et al. (2018) in two Amazon Mechanical Turk samples to explore whether women abdicated more frequently than men, whether men abdicated to women less frequently than to other men, and whether employment status predicts abdication. In experiment one, participants (N = 520) were assigned to one of three conditions in wh…

The Impact of Transportation Infrastructure on Women's Employment in India.

Indian women's labor force participation is extremely low and they are much less likely than men to work in the non-farm sector. Earlier research explained women's labor supply by individual characteristics, social institutions, and cultural norms, but not enough attention has been paid to the labor market opportunity structure that constrains women's labor market activities. Using data from the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) in 2004-05 and 2011-12, we examine how village transportation infrastructure affects women's and men's agricultural and non-agricultural employment. Results from f…

Canine visceral leishmaniasis biomarkers and their employment in vaccines.

The natural history of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) has been well described, particularly with respect to the parasite load in different tissues and immunopathological changes according to the progression of clinical forms. The biomarkers evaluated in these studies provide support for the improvement of the tools used in developing vaccines against CVL. Thus, we describe the major studies using the dog model that supplies the rationale for including different biomarkers (tissue parasitism, histopathology, hematological changes, leucocytes immunophenotyping, cytokines patterns, and in vi

Employer Groups Pushing For Improving Maternal Health.

Given the startling statistic that the rate of women dying of pregnancy-and childbirth-related complications in the United States is increasing, it seems logical that the U.S. health system would focus on improving outcomes in this area of care. But not all health plans address this disparity in health care delivery.

Interventions for improving employment outcomes for workers with HIV.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are adults of working age. Therefore unemployment and job loss resulting from HIV infection are major public health and economic concerns. Return to work (RTW) after diagnosis of HIV is a long and complex process, particularly if the individual has been absent from work for long periods. There have been various efforts to improve the RTW of persons living with HIV (HIV+), and many of these have been assessed formally in intervention studies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of interventions aimed at sus…

Implications of childhood autism for parental employment and earnings.

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in parental labor force participation, hours of work, and annual earnings associated with childhood autism spectrum disorders (ASD). METHODS: We used the 2002-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to examine parental labor market outcomes of children with ASD relative to children with another health limitation and children without health limitations. A logit model was used to estimate parental labor force participation. A tobit model was used to estimate parental hours of work and earnings. RESULTS: On average, mothers of children with ASD earn 35% ($7189) less

Employment and drowsy driving: a survey of American workers.

Drowsy driving is a major public health problem in the United States. Employment characteristics affect sleep, yet little is known about relationships between employment variables and drowsy driving. This study examined employment correlates (specifically, hours worked per week and shift work) and rates of self-reported drowsy driving, falling asleep while driving, and traffic crashes due to sleepiness in 1,000 employed adults who completed a telephone survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation. Working > 40 hr per week and shift work were associated with increased risk for drowsy drivi…

Genetic testing in the workplace: the employer's coin toss.

A toss of the coin by the modern-day employer reveals two options regarding genetic testing in the workplace. The employer may choose to take advantage of increasingly precise, available, and affordable genetic testing in order to ascertain the genetic characteristics--and deficiencies--of its employees. This outcome exposes the employer to a vast array of potential litigation and liability relating to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fourth Amendment, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and state legislation designed to protect genetic privacy. Alternatively, the employer may neglect t

Motherhood, employment and the development of depression. A replication of a finding?

A prospective inquiry of a largely working-class sample of women with children considers the effect of employment on risk of developing clinical depression. The hypothesis was that there would be a direct protective effect arising from employment once quality of other support was taken into account. In fact full-time working mothers were at high risk. This appeared to be explained by either prior work strain or a severe event involving 'deviant' behaviour on the part of husband/boyfriend or child. Neither factor was relevant for part-time workers. The severe events appeared to be particularly …

Insurance effects on employer group dental expenditures.

As the number of dental insureds and the amount of insured expenditures have increased over the past decade, so has interest in determining insurance effects on dental demand among employer groups and their insureds. Using Pennsylvania Blue Shield (PBS) employer group data representing 50-65% of all PBS insureds, the authors estimate the own-effect of basic insurance rates (diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, extraction services) and the cross-effects of riders A (crowns and oral surgery), B (prosthodontics), C (periodontics), and D (orthodontics) insurance rates on annual basic e

Health and employment of a female population in an urban area.

The authors discuss the results of a survey of women aged 25 to 50 living in a university town in southern France (Montpellier). Morbidity of these women (reported health problems, consultation with health care professionals etc) was analysed as a function of whether or not they were employed out of the home. Overall, differences were minimal; after correction for demographic factors, the only significant difference was more frequent reports of fatigue, overwork or nervousness in the employed women. Satisfaction with life situations was more closely correlated with health than was employment p…
