Epidemics of Japanese encephalitis (JE) are widely distributed throughout Asian countries including Japan, Korea, Thailand and India. In Japan, the incidence of JE has decreased markedly since 1967 due to widespread vaccination of children, a decreased mosquito population and other factors. However, approximately several cases of JE per year still occur during the period from August to early September, with high frequency in Kyushu, southern Japan. In this paper, the clinical features and MRI findings were reviewed. Also, St. Louis encephalitis, California encephalitis and Venezuelan encephali

The changing epidemiological and distribution patterns of Japanese encephalitis in various southern and east Asian countries are described. Immunization is considered to be the only practical way to control the infection. Several vaccines have been developed and two types of inactivated vaccine are now available for use in man.

Forty-nine consecutive patients with laboratory-confirmed acute Japanese encephalitis were studied to identify risk factors present at hospital admission which were associated with a fatal outcome. Sixteen patients (33%) died. The following constellation of findings correlated with a fatal outcome: infectious virus in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), low levels of Japanese encephalitis virus-specific IgG and IgM in both CSF and serum, and a severely depressed sensorium. Age, sex, days ill before admission, distance from home to the hospital, past medical history, CSF protein content, and CSF leukocy

We describe a variant of typhoid which was clinically indistinguishable from Japanese Encephalitis (JE). The strongly encephalitic presentation led to a potentially serious delay in starting specific antibiotic therapy. Awareness of the usual form of typhoid is of great importance to Army doctors because of the presence of British soldiers and families in the Dharan area of southern Nepal where both typhoid and JE are endemic.

In 2011, Bhutan's Royal Centre for Disease Control began Japanese encephalitis (JE) surveillance at 5 sentinel hospitals throughout Bhutan. During 2011-2018, a total of 20 JE cases were detected, indicating JE virus causes encephalitis in Bhutan. Maintaining JE surveillance will help improve understanding of JE epidemiology in this country.

A 7-month-old Japanese boy was diagnosed as having meningo-encephalitis with anterior horn cell damage. The complement fixation (CF) and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests showed increased antibody titers against Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, but HI antibody in the mother's serum was not increased. It appears that the lack of JE-antibodies from the mother may have resulted in increased JE viral infectivity in the patient. A decrease in the incidence of antibodies against various viruses in women of childbearing age may lead to increased rates of severe viral infection in infants.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled inflammatory response of the central nervous system is a hallmark of severe Japanese encephalitis (JE). Although inflammation is necessary to mount an efficient immune response against virus infections, exacerbated inflammatory response is often detrimental. In this context, cells of the monocytic lineage appear to be important forces driving JE pathogenesis.
MAIN BODY: Brain-infiltrating monocytes, macrophages and microglia play a major role in central nervous system (CNS) inflammation during JE. Moreover, the role of inflammatory monocytes in viral neuroinvasion dur
