Investigating RNA Viruses Infecting Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi.

Fungi are known to be frequently infected by mycoviruses, which could play an important yet underexplored role in the fungal holobiont. Mycoviruses can enhance fungal traits, such as salinity tolerance and resistance to fungicides, and may also benefit plant hosts in tripartite interactions. While research on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has focused on their ecological and agricultural value, few studies have explored their virome, possibly due to the difficulty of culturing AMF in the lab. This study presents an updated bioinformatic approach for virome characterization, emphasizing RNA…

Anticancer Properties of Selected Wood-Inhabiting Fungi.

Wood-inhabiting fungi constitute a valuable source of biologically active compounds with significant therapeutic potential. Particular attention is paid to species known for their high content of polysaccharides, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, and other secondary metabolites exhibiting cytotoxic and immunomodulatory activities. The results indicate that extracts obtained from these fungi may inhibit tumor growth, induce apoptosis, and support the immune response of the organism. Although further clinical studies are required, wood-inhabiting medicinal fungi represent a promising direction …

Classifying fungi biodiversity using hybrid transformer models.

Fungi are essential members of ecosystems, playing key roles in nutrient cycling, agriculture, and medicine. Their classification into proper species helps us to understand their biodiversity, allowing us to leverage their ecological and practical benefits. A new hybrid deep learning-based technique has been proposed, merging the Vision Transformer and Swin Transformer models with transfer learning frameworks like MobileNetV2, DenseNet121, and EfficientNetB0 for Fungi multiclass classification. This study utilized a publicly available dataset containing 9115 images of five fungal species from …

Fungi-Bacteria Correlation in Alcoholic Hepatitis Patients.

Alcohol-related liver disease is one of the most prevalent types of chronic liver diseases globally. Alcohol-related liver disease begins with fatty liver, which further develops into hepatic inflammation, hepatocyte injury, and progresses to fibrosis and cirrhosis. Compositional changes of gut bacteria and fungi were found in patients with alcohol-related liver disease. However, the functional changes of fungi and correlations between fungi and bacteria have not been investigated. In this study, we first examined the functional capacity of fungi in patients with alcohol-related liver disease …

PDR-like ABC systems in pathogenic fungi.

ABC transporters of the Pleiotropic Drug Resistance (PDR) family are the main actors of antifungal resistance in pathogenic fungi. While their involvement in clinical resistant strains has been proven, their transport mechanism remains unclear. Notably, one hallmark of PDR transporters is their asymmetry, with one canonical nucleotide-binding site capable of ATP hydrolysis while the other site is not. Recent publications reviewed here show that the so-called "deviant" site is of crucial importance for drug transport and is a step towards alleviating the mystery around the existence of non-cata…

Nematode-trapping fungi eavesdrop on nematode pheromones.

The recognition of molecular patterns associated with specific pathogens or food sources is fundamental to ecology and plays a major role in the evolution of predator-prey relationships. Recent studies showed that nematodes produce an evolutionarily highly conserved family of small molecules, the ascarosides, which serve essential functions in regulating nematode development and behavior. Here, we show that nematophagous fungi, natural predators of soil-dwelling nematodes, can detect and respond to ascarosides. Nematophagous fungi use specialized trapping devices to catch and consume nematodes…

Allergic alveolitis due to wood-rot fungi.

Farmer's lung is rare in Australia whereas allergic alveolitis due to domestic fungal exposure ("domestic allergic alveolitis") is common. However there has been no systematic analysis of the fungi responsible for domestic allergic alveolitis in Australia. The aim of this study was to determine the sources and types of fungi that cause this type of alveolitis in Australia. Twelve subjects with recently diagnosed, biopsy proved, alveolitis thought on clinical grounds to be due to domestic fungal exposure were studied. The houses of all subjects were inspected, and fungal samples were taken. All…

Friendly fungi: symbiosis with commensal Candida albicans.

Mucosal tissues are constitutively colonized by a wide assortment of host-adapted microbes. This includes the polymorphic fungus Candida albicans which is a primary target of human adaptive responses. Immunogenicity is replicated after intestinal colonization in preclinical models with a surprising array of protective benefits for most hosts, but harmful consequences for a few. The interaction between fungus and host is complex, and traditionally, the masking of antigenic fungal ligands has been viewed as a tactic for fungal immune evasion during invasive infection. However, we propose that dy

Fungi, fungicide discovery and global food security.

Securing sufficient food for a growing world population is of paramount importance for social stability and the well-being of mankind. Recently, it has become evident that fungal pathogens pose the greatest biotic challenge to our calorie crops. Moreover, the loss of commodity crops to fungal disease destabilises the economies of developing nations, thereby increasing the dimension of the threat. Our best weapon to control these pathogens is fungicides, but increasing resistance puts us in an arms race against them. New anti-fungal compounds need to be discovered, such as mono-alky lipophilic …

Adaptation strategies: how environmental fungi become fatal?

Most fungi contributing to systemic human infections are environmental pathogens, whose fatal pathogenicity is largely derived from their survival strategies developed to adapt to a plethora of natural stressors. A well-studied example of such pathogens is Cryptococcus neoformans. C. neoformans can cause life-threatening cryptococcosis and meningoencephalitis, which claim more than 600 000 lives annually. Recent findings reveal that the coordinated application of strategies like morphotype transition, cell-cell communication and cellular heterogeneity play critical roles in optimizing fungal s…
