In this research, the composition of free phenols, bound phenols, and anthocyanins and their in vitro antioxidant activity and in vitro α-glucosidase inhibiting activity were observed in different barley colors. The outcomes revealed that the contents of total phenols (570.78 mg/100 gDW), total flavonoids (47.08 mg/100 gDW), and anthocyanins (48.07 mg/100 g) were the highest in purple barley. Furthermore, the structure, composition, and concentration of phenolics differed depending on the colors of barley. The types and contents of bound total phenolic acids and flavonoids were greater than th

Brewers' spent grain (BSG), the main by-product of the brewing industry, is a rich source of minerals and water-soluble vitamins such as thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, and cobalamin. Bioaccessibility through in vitro digestion is an important step toward the complete absorption of minerals and B group vitamins in the gastrointestinal system. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) together with inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the quantification of the macro- and micro-minerals. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatograp

Foliar fertilization delivers essential nutrients directly to plant tissues, reducing excessive soil fertilizer applications that can lead to eutrophication following nutrient leaching. Foliar nutrient absorption is a dynamic process affected by leaf surface structure and composition, plant nutrient status, and ion physicochemical properties. We applied multiple methods to study the foliar absorption behaviors of manganese (Mn) and phosphorus (P) in nutrient-deficient spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) at two growth stages. Nutrient-specific chlorophyll a fluorescence assays were used to visualiz

Short-term heat stress during male meiosis causes defects in crossover formation, meiotic progression and cell wall formation in the monocot barley, ultimately leading to pollen abortion. High temperature conditions cause a reduction of fertility due to alterations in meiotic processes and gametogenesis. The male gametophyte development has been shown to be particularly sensitive to heat stress, and even short-term and modest temperature shifts cause alterations in crossover formation. In line with previous reports, we observed that male meiosis in the monocot barley exposed for 24-45 h to hea

Stripe rust is a fungal disease that has devastated the barley production for a long time. The present study focused on the role of β-glucan, PR proteins, diamine oxidase (DAO), polyamine oxidase (PAO), key enzymes and metabolites of phenol and proline metabolism in the stripe rust resistance of barley. RD2901 with resistant behavior against stripe rust showed increased levels of PR proteins, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL) along with the accumulation of β-glucan and lignin which strengthen the plant cell wall during plant-pathogen interaction. It also depicted

Manganese (Mn) deficiency affects various processes in plant shoots. However, the functions of Mn in roots and the processes involved in root adaptation to Mn deficiency are largely unresolved. Here, we show that the suberization of endodermal cells in barley (Hordeum vulgare) roots is altered in response to Mn deficiency, and that the intensity of Mn deficiency ultimately determines whether suberization increases or decreases. Mild Mn deficiency increased the length of the unsuberized zone close to the root tip, and increased the distance from the root tip at which the fully suberized zone de

The application of the protein and polysaccharide fractions of barley spent grain as a basis of growth media for probiotic bacteria was studied. High values of biomass yield, cell viability, and organic acid production were observed in the variants of media containing the barley spent grain supplemented with lactose, ascorbic acid, yeast extract, and mineral salts. Cells of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria had the typical rod-shaped morphology.

Despite the large worldwide beer consumption, allergic reactions have very rarely been reported. We describe two cases of severe systemic reactions due to beer ingestion: one case of anaphylaxis requiring emergency care and one of generalized urticaria and angioedema. The two patients underwent a detailed diagnostic procedure involving skin testing, oral challenge with additives, detection of specific IgE to the components of beer, and oral challenge with beer in one patient. The results of the tests, in the particular skin tests and IgE assay, allowed us to detect barley as the specific ingre

5-n-Alk(en)ylresorcinols represent a major group of constitutive defense phenolic lipids in cereals; however, the non-target effects of fungicides on their accumulation, homologue profiles, and biological activity remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the effects of tebuconazole, a triazole fungicide widely used for cereal seed treatment, on biomass production, 5-n-alk(en)ylresorcinol accumulation, and homologue composition in five barley cultivars, and evaluated the antifungal activity of the predominant synthetic homologues against Rhizoctonia cerealis. Two-way ANOVA revealed th

To develop high-quality cereal vinegar, this study utilized barley flour and wheat bran for acetic acid fermentation. Compared to the wheat bran group (WB group), total phenols, β-glucan, ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, ethyl palmitate, and (2R,3R)-(-)-2,3-butanediol were identified as the key nutrients and flavor substances in the barley flour group (BF group). To further enhance the nutritional and flavor quality, these key nutrients and flavor substances were selected as indicators. Optimization was achieved by adjusting the barley flour amount to 83%, fermentation temperature to 33 °C, mash

Zinc (Zn) deficiency significantly impacts plant growth and productivity in agriculture. Seed priming is a promising strategy to enhance plant tolerance to nutrient deficiencies. This study examines the effects of priming barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds with silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs), nitric oxide (NO), and their combination on germination and growth under Zn-deficient conditions. Primed seedlings showed superior growth, and improved photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant enzyme activities, the ascorbate-glutathione cycle function, nutrient-related gene expression, and sucrose metabolism

Barley yellow mosaic disease (BYMD), a soilborne viral disease, severely compromises winter barley productivity. This disease is caused by barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and the barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV), occurring in either single or mixed infections. To elucidate pathogenesis, 10 barley varieties with differential resistance were systematically analyzed. Virus-specific RT-qPCR revealed distinct accumulation patterns of BaYMV and BaMMV in infected tissues. Crucially, transmission requires temperatures persistently below 10°C for 40 to 54 days, facilitating viral entry into roots fo

BACKGROUND: Enzyme supplementation and the inclusion of fibre in the barley-based diets have been some of the alternatives proposed to improve productivity in the absence of growth promoters.
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate the effect of adding sunflower hulls (SFH), a multi-enzyme carbohydrate, and feed forms (mash and pellet) on performance and some physiological parameters in broiler chickens fed barley containing diets.
METHODS: Treatments were two feed forms (mash vs. pelleted), and four diets consisted of a barley-based diet (control, CTL) or test diets which contain

Recent reports have highlighted that beer labelled "gluten-free", crafted with enzymatic treatments to remove gluten, may contain polypeptides that could be immunotoxic to individuals with coeliac disease. As strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is the only way to manage this condition, accurate labelling is crucial to those with coeliac disease. This paper aims to discuss the presence, levels and immunogenicity of gluten peptides found in gluten-reduced barley beers. While advances have been made in the detection and quantification of gluten peptides in beer, there are still challenges to t

Developing plants from in vitro culture of microspores or immature pollen grains (androgenesis) is a highly genotype-dependent process whose effectiveness in cereals is significantly reduced by occurrence of albino regenerants. Here, we examined a hypothesis that the molecular differentiation of plastids in barley microspores prior to in vitro culture affects the genotype ability to regenerate green plants in culture. At the mid-to-late uninucleate (ML) stage, routinely used to initiate microspore culture, the expression of most genes involved in plastid transcription, translation and starch s

A step-wise, 'test-all-positive-gluten' analytical methodology has been developed and verified to assess kernel-based gluten contamination (i.e., wheat, barley and rye kernels) during gluten-free (GF) oat production. It targets GF claim compliance at the serving-size level (of a pouch or approximately 40-50g). Oat groats are collected from GF oat production following a robust attribute-based sampling plan then split into 75-g subsamples, and ground. R-Biopharm R5 sandwich ELISA R7001 is used for analysis of all the first15-g portions of the ground sample. A >20-ppm result disqualifies the prod

Hybridization using overgo probes is an established approach for screening arrayed bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries. We have improved the use of overgos by increasing the yield of positive clones using reduced levels of radioisotopes and enzyme. The strategy involves labeling with all four radiolabeled nucleotides in a hot pulse followed by a cold nucleotide chase and then extending the exposure time to compensate for reduced specific activity of the probes. The resulting cost savings and reduced human exposure to radiation make the use of highly pooled overgo probes a more attr

Carbon catabolite repression 4 (CCR4) is a conserved mRNA deadenylase regulating posttranscriptional gene expression. However, regulation of CCR4 in virus infections is less understood. Here, we characterized a pro-viral role of CCR4 in replication of a plant cytorhabdovirus, Barley yellow striate mosaic virus (BYSMV). The barley (Hordeum vulgare) CCR4 protein (HvCCR4) was identified to interact with the BYSMV phosphoprotein (P). The BYSMV P protein recruited HvCCR4 from processing bodies (PBs) into viroplasm-like bodies. Overexpression of HvCCR4 promoted BYSMV replication in plants. Conversel

Metal contaminated crops from contaminated soils are possible hazards for the food chain. The aim of this study was to find practical and cost-effective measures to reduce metal uptake in crops grown on metal contaminated soils near a former metal smelter in Austria. Metal-inefficient cultivars of crop plants commonly grown in the area were investigated in combination with in-situ soil amendments. A laboratory batch experiment using 15 potential amendments was used to select 5 amendments to treat contaminated soil in a pot study using two Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars that differed in
