Self-help techniques for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Even with the best treatment available in the United States, people with schizophrenia often remain troubled by auditory hallucinations. Given the less than optimal results of traditional mental health care, the following exploratory study was conducted. A convenience sample of 33 adult outpatients with schizophrenia were interviewed to elicit what (if any) self-help strategies they used for coping with auditory hallucinations. The patients were all being treated at a community mental health clinic. The self-help strategies reported by the patients included (a) physiological changes, (b) cogni

Clinical approach to dyspareunia.

Dyspareunia needs to be addressed from an integrated patient-centered perspective. This review analyzes the organic causes of pain during intercourse. Factors that are often underevaluated in the clinical setting include hormonal, inflammatory, muscular, iatrogenic, neurologic, vascular, connective, and immunitary causes. Psychosexual factors, such as vaginismus, loss of libido, arousal disorders and sexual pain-related disorders, often overlap. A preliminary clinical approach aimed at integrating different biological and psychosexual etiologies in a comprehensive manner is discussed in this a

Potentially traumatic interpersonal events, psychological distress and recurrent headache in a population-based cohort of adolescents: the HUNT study.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent headache co-occurs commonly with psychological distress, such as anxiety or depression. Our objective was to assess the hypothesised association between exposure to PTIEs and recurrent migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) in adolescents, and to further examine the potential impact of psychological distress on this relationship. DESIGN: Population-based, cross-sectional cohort study. The study includes self-reported d

From Fear to Function: How Physiotherapists Navigate Psychological Challenges in Patients Undergoing Rehabilitation After ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Psychological readiness plays a critical role in return to sport (RTS) outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), yet physiotherapists (PTs) often feel unprepared to support this aspect of recovery. Although clinical guidelines advocate for psychological strategies, practical tools and structured interventions remain scarce. HYPOTHESIS: Experienced PTs will actively use psychological strategies during rehabilitation to support patient readiness for RTS. PTs perceive themselves as playing a central role in addressing psychological barriers. STUDY DESIGN: Qual

Clinical assessment of decision-making capacity in acquired brain injury with personality change.

Assessment of decision-making capacity (DMC) can be difficult in acquired brain injury (ABI) particularly with the syndrome of organic personality disorder (OPD) (the "frontal lobe syndrome"). Clinical neuroscience may help but there are challenges translating its constructs to the decision-making abilities considered relevant by law and ethics. An in-depth interview study of DMC in OPD was undertaken. Six patients were purposefully sampled and rich interview data were acquired for scrutiny using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Interview data revealed that awareness of deficit and th

Growing up in foster families or institutions: attachment representation and psychological adjustment of young adults.

This study considers whether type of placement (foster care versus institutional care) is related to patterns of attachment representation and the quality of psychological adjustment in a sample of 48 young adults, who grew up either in foster care or in institutions. The subjects were interviewed using the Adult Attachment Interview (George, Kaplan, & Main, 1996, [2001]) and their psychological adjustment was assessed by using the Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 1993; German version by Franke, 2000). The results show significantly more positive effects of foster care when compared with in

Psychosocial Cardiological Schedule-Revised (PCS-R) in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit: Reflections Upon Data Collection (2010-2017) and New Challenges.

INTRODUCTION: The Psychosocial Cardiological Schedule (PCS) was developed as a screening tool for patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to detect clinically relevant psychosocial/cognitive problems requiring psychological assessment/intervention. Filled out by a trained nurse, it classifies patients according to their need or not for a psychological interview and intervention provided by the psychologist (PCS-Yes vs. PCS-No). AIMS: The main aim was to compare PCS data collected, respectively, in 2010 and 2017, regarding patients' socio-demographic characteristics, clinical variables
