Louisiana neurosurgeons and the organ procurement shortage: a comparative analysis of perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values.

The supply of transplantable organs continues to fall behind demand. Knowledge of the perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values held by health care workers involved in the process is critical. This is particularly true of neurosurgeons because of their pivotal role in the procurement process. Survey data are used to compare neurosurgeons (n = 59) with emergency physicians (n = 125), critical care nurses (n = 267), and other physicians (n = 445). Analysis revealed that attitudes among those health care workers regularly involved with organ procurement and transplantation--neurosurgeons, emerge

Improving Care at Correctional Facilities: Listening, Learning and Creating Change from a Patient Care Quality Office.

Correctional Health Services (CHS) became part of the Provincial Health Services Authority in British Columbia (BC) in October, 2017. There are 2,700 clients in BC in 10 facilities, and approximately 60% of these clients have mental health issues and/or substance use issues. To address healthcare quality complaints and queries for this unique setting, in keeping with provincial legislation, nursing role of the patient care quality specialist was created in 2018. Challenges, particularly related to direct communication limitations due to the security of incarcerated persons, have led to adapted…

Parental Leave and Corporate Welfare at the Territorial Health Company of Fermo. A Cross- Sectional Prospective Study (Marche, Italy).

INTRODUCTION: One of today's main issues is balancing work and family life, which significantly impacts the socio-economic and working conditions of the population. Since the last century, support for parenthood has been at the center of legislative attention both in Italy and Europe. The Italian Constitution of 1948 began addressing the shift from the woman's exclusively domestic role, promoting female workforce integration from the 1950s. Today, Italian legislation focuses on gender equality and worker protection, with measures aimed at reconciling work and family life. Recent terminological

Legal requirements for pharmacists to destroy unused medications in skilled nursing facilities. - A 50 state review and insights based on the Covid-19 pandemic.

A novel challenge presents itself when the law requires a pharmacist be on site to perform their required duties, such as destroying unused medications, however a skilled nursing facility is not allowing them to enter the property due to a pandemic. Current laws regarding drug destruction are unclear and vastly differ among the states. At times, there is even conflict between skilled nursing facility laws and regulations with pharmacy laws and regulations. This legal analysis reveals that the states are divided into 4 general groupings. 1) Where a pharmacist is physically required on site to d

Attitudes, knowledge, and behavioral control regarding child abuse reporting in middle eastern nursing professionals: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse is critically underreported in the Middle East, with up to 90% of cases going unidentified. Nurses play a central role in child protection systems, yet factors influencing their reporting practices in this region have not been comprehensively synthesized. This study aims to review systematically and meta-analyze evidence on Middle Eastern nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and perceived behavioral control regarding child abuse reporting. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science,

Leadership Experiences of Nurse Managers in a Saudi Ministry of Health Hospital: A Focused Ethnographic Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the key priorities of Saudi Vision 2030 is to ensure that all Saudi citizens have access to high-quality healthcare, but this goal is constrained by international and domestic nursing staff shortages. Nursing directors have recommended introducing a professional career path focused on developing nurses' leadership skills. Despite recognition of nurse managers' key role in recruiting, retaining, and engaging nurses, few studies have explored how Saudi managers acquire and deploy leadership skills. This study explores how nurse managers view and experience workplace leadership

Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer: A call for action in high-income countries with low rates of breastfeeding.

Women in the UK have a 15% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Like other high-income countries, women in the UK are having children later in life which increases their risk. The risk of breast cancer is reduced by 4.3% for every 12 months of breastfeeding, this is in addition to the 7.0% decrease in risk observed for each birth. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (20%) and in carriers of BRCA1 mutations (22-55%). The mechanisms of reduced risk as a result of pregnancy are related to changes in RNA processing and cellular differentiation. The UK has a low ra

Nursing leadership in Housing First implementation: A comparative analysis of care coordination approaches across four U.S. states.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness affects over 650,000 Americans annually, with 25% to 30% experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Despite evidence supporting Housing First approaches, implementation remains inconsistent across states, leading to fragmented care delivery and persistent housing instability for vulnerable populations. PURPOSE: To analyze Housing First implementation across four U.S. states and identify nursing practice and policy implications using the Minnesota Public Health Intervention Wheel framework. METHODS: Comparative case study analysis of Housing

Palliative care nursing and moral coherence: Early responses to MAiD as hastened death.

BackgroundSince its inception over half a century ago, a defining attribute of palliative care philosophy has been an insistence that this approach intends to neither hasten death nor prolong life. A commitment to facilitate a 'natural' end-of-life trajectory is ubiquitous in palliative care discourse. However, as an increasing number of jurisdictions around the world legislate to allow assisted death, palliative care providers are having to re-evaluate the relevance of this commitment for the relational ethics of their practice.Research Aims and ParticipantsIn this paper, we explore how a sam

Evaluating newly acquired authority of nurse practitioners and physician assistants for reserved medical procedures in the Netherlands: a study protocol.

AIM: The study protocol is designed to evaluate the effects of granting independent authorization for medical procedures to nurse practitioners and physician assistants on processes and outcomes of health care. BACKGROUND: Recent (temporarily) enacted legislation in Dutch health care authorizes nurse practitioners and physician assistants to indicate and perform specified medical procedures, i.e. catheterization, cardioversion, defibrillation, endoscopy, injection, puncture, prescribing and simple surgical procedures, independently. Formerly, these procedures were exclusively reserved to phys

Policy to practice: Translating "non-directive" pre-abortion counselling from legal stipulation to healthcare encounters.

BackgroundThe liberalisation of abortion law does not necessarily translate into quality services. The South African Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act includes the requirement of non-mandatory and non-directive pre-abortion counselling. However, pre-abortion counselling in public abortion clinics is often directive, coercive and, at times, anti-abortion. Objectives: We reflect on our attempts to ensure that the legislative requirement of "non-directive" pre-abortion counselling is realised in public termination of pregnancy clinics through the nurses' participation in an in-service aborti

Improving access to care through Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: Focus on perinatal patients with Opioid Use Disorder.

Perinatal substance use disorders, and all of the associated sequelae, continue to be a national health crisis that is further impacted by shifts in access to obstetrical care, particularly in rural areas. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) specifically presents as a medical condition for which evidence-based guidelines support the use of medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the form of Methadone or Buprenorphine for both non-pregnant and pregnant women. However, the overall rates of access for those treatment modalities remain sparse. There is a public call to increase access to MOUD

[Reshaping the Value of Nursing: Toward a Sustainable Future].

Under population aging and rising healthcare demand pressures, the nursing workforce has become even more critical to healthcare system stability. However, Taiwan is currently facing a "dual crisis". Nearly 40% of newly licensed nurses do not enter clinical practice, creating a substantial annual workforce gap, while current staff continue to exit the profession at a high rate due to overwork and poor work-life balance. This vicious cycle poses an existential threat to the foundations of healthcare. It is worth noting that this problem is not unique to Taiwan. Similar challenges have been wide

COSMOS - a study comparing peripheral intravenous systems.

In many areas of the world, safety peripheral intravenous systems have come into widespread use. The Madrid region was the first in Spain to adopt such an approach. These systems, though initially introduced to protect users from sharps injuries, have now evolved to include patient protection features as well. Patient protection, simply stated, means closing the system to pathogen entry. The authors' purpose was to investigate, in a prospective and randomized study, the clinical performance of a closed safe intravenous system versus an open system (COSMOS - Compact Closed System versus Mounted
