Based on the major locus genetic model, we designed a computer program used BASIC language for comprehensive segregation analysis in IBM microcomputer. The applicability of the program has been tested by analyzing 113 nuclear families with ichthyosis vulgaris selected by family method and family-history method, 98 nuclear families with ichthyosis vulgaris selected by family method as will as 101 nuclear families with sensorineural deafness of unknown causes. The program is useful for genetic analysis and genetic counselling.

This paper examines the power of the sporadic v. familial method as applied to schizophrenia and major depression. The model used assumes aetiological heterogeneity with a subpopulation of cases due to a 'major' environmental event and the remainder resulting from a generalized single major locus. The findings suggest that, for sample sizes to which it is commonly applied, the sporadic v. familial classification has low power to detect aetiological heterogeneity. When applied to nuclear families, substantial power requires at a minimum 100-150 proband families. If the proportion of environment

Autism may involve an autoimmune pathogenesis in a subgroup of patients. The frequency of anti-nuclear antibodies in 80 autistic children and their relationship to a family history of autoimmunity were studied, compared with 80 healthy, matched children. Children with autism had a significantly higher percent seropositivity of anti-nuclear antibodies (20%) than healthy children (2.5%; P < 0.01). Fifty percent of anti-nuclear antibody-seropositive autistic children had an anti-nuclear antibody titer of > or =1:640 (very high positive); 25%, > or =1:160 (high positive); and the remaining 25%, 1:

BACKGROUND: A study by Shah & Sonuga-Barke (1995) identified a relationship between family structure and the mental health of Pakistani Muslim mothers and their children. Children in extended families fared better, but their mothers fared worse than their nuclear family counterparts. The present study replicates and extends this study by exploring the impact of nuclear and extended family living on the mental health of three generations (children, mothers and grandmothers) in British Hindu as well as Muslim communities.
METHOD: 44 Muslim and 42 Hindu families participated in the study. The me…

PURPOSE: A growing body of research has identified the influence of family factors on depression. This study aimed to investigate the effect … nd depressive symptoms.
RESULTS: After LCA analysis, three family structure types were delineated: Nuclear Family, Paternal Grandparents Family (single father + paternal grandparents as primary caregivers), and Paternal Grandparents Family (single mother + maternal grandparents as primary caregivers). Detection rate of depressive symptoms in non-nuclear familie …

Zoe, a 13-year-old white girl, presents as a new patient to your pediatric clinic with complaints of frequent emesis, anxiety, and learning problems, and previous diagnosis of cerebellar ataxia. Parents accompany Zoe and state, "it is really hard for her to go out, she gets sick and falls easily." She was born full term by vaginal delivery without complications. Given globally delayed milestones, she received early intervention services. Feeding problems began at infancy, including gastroesophageal reflux and aspiration pneumonia. At age 2, Zoe saw a neurologist and brain MRI revealed cerebella

Darier disease (DD) and Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD) are autosomal dominantly inherited genodermatosis, caused by mutations in ATP2A2 gene and ATP2C1 respectively. We investigated clinical and laboratory two patients - a men with Darier disease and a woman with Hailey-Hailey disease. The patient with Darier disease has mucosal lesions and dental modifications associated with mild mental retardation. At Hailey-Hailey case, the skin lesions are associated with neuropsychiatric and endocrinologic disorders. In both cases, the mutation is inherited from parents. Even if this diseases have similar f

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a common, age related, idiopathic generalized epileptic syndrome. We aimed to define the expression of JME in Indian probands and study the occurrence of seizures/epileptic syndromes in their family members.
METHODS: We studied 225 JME probands with a uniform protocol. recording the type and frequency of seizures, precipitating factors, EEG data, and family history. Detailed family pedigrees were drawn to include all the 1st- and 2nd-degree relatives of probands. The seizures/epileptic syndromes in relatives examined were classified in a unifor

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: To identify the pathogenic gene and mutation site of a Chinese family with congenital cataract.
METHODS: Eight family members and 100 controls were employed, and targeted exome sequencing was used to identify the genetically pathogenic factor of the proband.
RESULTS: Targeted next-generation sequencing identified a novel missense mutation c.209A>C (p.Q70P) of CRYBB1 gene in the family. Sanger sequencing results showed that this heterozygous mutation was a causative mutation, which was not found in unaffected family members and healthy controls. Bioinformatics predicts

Thirtynine of nuclear leukocyte Pelger-Huët anomaly occurring in two Italian families are presented and discussed. The study of the genealogical trees has confirmed that the anomaly is a familial and congenital form, with autosomal dominant inheritance. The incidence of the anomaly in our popolation is 1 to 4,500. In the heterozygous form the anomaly is characterized by decreased segmentation of the nucleus, distinctive nuclear forms and pyknosis of the nuclear chromatin out of proportion of the nuclear area. The results of morphologic, cytochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetic studies are
