UNLABELLED: Jugular bulb oximetry is the most widely used method of monitoring cerebral oxygenation. More recently, measurement of brain tissue oxygenation has been reported in head-injured patients. We compared the changes in brain tissue oxygen partial pressure (PbO2) with changes in jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjVO2) in response to hyperventilation in areas of brain with and without focal pathology. Thirteen patients with severe head injuries were studied. A multiparameter sensor was inserted into areas of brain with focal pathology in five patients and outside areas of focal patholog

Oxygen (O2) is now essential for the survival and growth of many organisms. Although the current atmosphere is rich in O2 due to the action of photosynthetic organisms, this was not the case in the past, and even now, many existing ecosystems are oxygen-poor. Under these conditions, appropriating a continuous source of O2 through photosymbiosis can represent an important selective advantage. In this review, we first present the advantages that hosts can gain from O2 production by photosymbionts. However, O2 production is also associated with oxidative stress, and we discuss how organisms hosti

Hypoxia in plants is detrimental to plant growth and crop productivity. It typically arises from adverse environmental conditions that limit oxygen availability, thereby restricting mitochondrial respiration. However, hypoxia also occurs in specific plant tissues where oxygen levels are low due to intense respiratory activity or limited oxygen diffusion. Under these conditions, the existence of a molecular oxygen-sensing mechanism directs plant metabolism and developmental pathways, matching plant fitness to the environment. Oxygen sensing also allows hypoxia to act as a developmental cue, gui

In most vertebrates, hemoglobin's primary function is to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. Hemoglobin is also expressed in cells such as dopaminergic neurons and chondrocytes, as well as in organelles such as mitochondria. Depending on its location, hemoglobin subunits can interact with proteins involved in various functions, including anion exchange, nitric oxide synthesis, and ATP synthesis. These interactions suggest that hemoglobin has diverse regulatory roles beyond gas transport. During hypoxia and an excess of nitrite and protons, deoxygenated hemoglobin exhibits nitrite reductase ac

Immediately after birth the newly born infant aerates the lungs, diminishes pulmonary vascular resistance, and initiates gas exchange. However, under certain circumstances this process will not be adequately accomplished. Asphyxia is characterized by periods of hypoxia and ischemia leading frequently to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The mainstay of newborn resuscitation resides in the establishment of a functional residual capacity and an adequate oxygenation. Recent guidelines have established guidelines which provide counsel on the use of oxygen in term infants. However, preterm oxygenati

Retinopathy of prematurity is on the rise and a third epidemic has been identified. In spite of extensive research and progress in the understanding of this disease in recent years, 50 000 children worldwide are blinded by this condition each year. The relation between hyperoxia, low-gestational age, growth retardation, oxygen dependent growth factors, and oxidative stress are now being understood more clearly. We know that in the first phase of retinopathy of prematurity, hyperoxia inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor. In the second phase, vascular endothelial growth factor rises, and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become a more or less accepted standard in the algorithm of advanced acute … hanges in indications and the materials used. Impressive technical progress has been made in pumps, oxygenators, and coating of artificial surfaces, leading to a higher biocompatibility and to a lower rate of procedure-related complications. The potential of new inline pumps in combination with a decreasing rate of procedure-related complications might lead t …

We investigated the ventilatory response to normobaric poikilocapnic hyperoxia in healthy subjects. The study was carried out in 26 subjects of the mean age 26 +/- 0.9 (SE) years, who breathed pure oxygen through a two-way valve for 10 min. The subjects were in the sitting position with a mouthpiece and nose clip attached. Ventilatory flow was recorded using a pneumotachograph and minute ventilation was calculated from the tidal and frequency components. The SaO(2) and alveolar CO(2) tension were continuously monitored. Ten of the same subjects constituted a control group in which room air was
