Just-in-Time Strategies to Reduce the Effect of Interviewer Bias During Trainee Recruitment.

Bias impacts all aspects of medical trainee applications, from grades to narrative reviews. Interviews provide an avenue to become acquainted with applicants beyond their written application, but even the most egalitarian interviewers are subject to implicit biases, including those who hold marginalized identities themselves. Simply building awareness around implicit bias is inadequate to reduce the effect. Here, 5 evidence-informed strategies are presented that can be implemented by faculty on-the-spot to mitigate the impact of implicit bias during the short interview interaction: individuati

Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Perceptions and Treatment of Underrepresented in Medicine Physician Assistants/Associate Educators.

On Thursday, June 27, 2023, the US Supreme Court struck down race-conscious admission practices in higher education. While other demographic factors, such as the traditional Health Resources and Services Administration-disadvantaged background indicators, can be considered during the holistic admission process, explicit consideration based on race and/or ethnicity is prohibited. As a result, physician assistant/associate (PA) programs are tasked with developing novel ways to address equity, diversity, and inclusion during the admission and hiring processes. As Drumgold et al note, closing the

A New Dawn: Resident Recruitment in the United States in the Post-COVID Era.

The widespread adoption of virtual residency interviews in response to the COVID-19 pandemic led to an explosion in literature comparing the pros and cons of virtual and in-person interviews, but also led to an explosion in already-high residency application and interview volumes. While virtual interviews were substantially cheaper for all involved, there is fear that applicants and programs cannot judge one another as well as during in-person interviews. Likewise, increases in application volumes have made holistic application review more challenging for program directors, but the recent rise

Gendered hiring and attrition on the path to parity for academic faculty.

Despite long-running efforts to increase gender diversity among tenured and tenure-track faculty in the U.S., women remain underrepresented in most academic fields, sometimes dramatically so. Here, we quantify the relative importance of faculty hiring and faculty attrition for both past and future faculty gender diversity using comprehensive data on the training and employment of 268,769 tenured and tenure-track faculty rostered at 12,112U.S. PhD-granting departments, spanning 111 academic fields between 2011 and 2020. Over this time, we find that hiring had a far greater impact on women's rep

Men in occupational therapy.

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of male occupational therapists so that better strategies for recruiting men into the profession can be developed and the problem of retaining men in the field can be addressed. Male occupational therapists were surveyed at 3-year intervals, in 1978, 1982, and 1985. Our survey results were compared with results of the 1969 American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Member Data Survey reported by Jantzen (1973), the 1982 AOTA Member Data Survey, and an unpublished study by Watson (1983). The number of professional occupational

A Study on the Prevalence of Occupational Stress Among Police Personnel in Delhi.

Introduction Occupational stress or stress at work is a real challenge for workers as well as organisations. Work-related stress can be caused by poor work organisation, poor work design, poor management, unsatisfactory working conditions, and lack of support from colleagues and supervisors. Police personnel work in such conditions that make them vulnerable to adverse physiological and psychological outcomes; however, this often goes underreported, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. The current study focused on two types of occupational stress, namely operational stress and organisational stres

Predicting Maximal Military Occupational Task Performance from Physical Fitness Tests Using Machine Learning.

PURPOSE: Optimal performance in military tasks is crucial for operational success. These tasks are often simulated in training, assessing personnel performance within a military environment. However, these assessments are time-consuming and a potential injury risk. Physical characteristics such as muscular strength, power, aerobic endurance, and circumferences can be used to predict these dynamic and demanding tasks. Utilizing machine learning models to predict assessment outcomes may lead to optimized management of personnel, time, and interventions in the military. METHODS: This study recru

The association between PTSD and cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in male veterans of the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts: a systematic review.

Military personnel with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can experience high levels of mental and physical health comorbidity, potentially indicating a high level of functional impairment that can impact on both military readiness and later ill-health. There is strong evidence to implicate PTSD as a contributory factor to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) among serving personnel and veterans. This systematic review focusses on the association between PTSD and cardiovascular disease/risk factors in male, military serving and ex-serving personnel who served in the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts.
