Accurate delineation of pathological lungs from computed tomography (CT) images remains mostly unsolved because available methods fail to provide a reliable generic solution due to high variability of abnormality appearance. Local descriptor-based classification methods have shown to work well in annotating pathologies; however, these methods are usually computationally intensive which restricts their widespread use in real-time or near-real-time clinical applications. In this paper, we present a novel approach for fast, accurate, reliable segmentation of pathological lungs from CT scans by co

INTRODUCTION: Alteration of bone trabecular architecture is a predictor of fracture risk in osteoporosis. Until now, microarchitecture can only be measured on a bone biopsy, thus limiting microarchitecture analysis in routine clinical practice for osteoporosis. Texture analysis on X-ray images has been advocated to be a suitable means to assess two-dimensional (2-D) microarchitecture in the research field. But little is known about the relationships between three-dimensional (3-D) architecture and texture analysis, particularly in clinical practice. The purposes of the study were: (1) to explo

PURPOSE: The paper introduces a novel two-step network based on semi-supervised learning for intestine segmentation from CT volumes. The intestine folds in the abdomen with complex spatial structures and contact with neighboring organs that bring difficulty for accurate segmentation and labeling at the pixel level. We propose a multi-dimensional consistency learning method to reduce the insufficient intestine segmentation results caused by complex structures and the limited labeled dataset.
METHODS: We designed a two-stage model to segment the intestine. In stage 1, a 2D Swin U-Net is trained

BackgroundQuality control (QC) in mammography is crucial for breast imaging and it relies predominantly on subjective assessment of image quality (IQ) in phantom.PurposeTo validate the efficacy of automated software assessment in comparison with human observers.Material and MethodsA total of 80 processed images of the ACR DM phantom were collected from mammography systems supplied by five different vendors. IQ was assessed using in-house developed software and 11 human observers (five experts and six non-experts). Three different target objects of various sizes and shapes were scored (six fibe

We developed an advanced computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) scheme for the detection of various types of lung nodules on chest radiographs intended for implementation in clinical situations. We used 924 digitized chest images (992 noncalcified nodules) which had a 500 x 500 matrix size with a 1024 gray scale. The images were divided randomly into two sets which were used for training and testing of the computerized scheme. In this scheme, the lung field was first segmented by use of a ribcage detection technique, and then a large search area (448 x 448 matrix size) within the chest image was auto

Liver cancer remains a major cause of cancer mortality, and precise CT-based liver tumor segmentation is critical for early diagnosis and personalized treatment. In practice, fully 3D‑supervised training is limited by prohibitive annotation costs and memory and compute demands. Achieving 3D segmentation from purely 2D supervision is attractive yet challenging due to through-plane context loss, inter‑slice inconsistency, weak boundaries, and low contrast and noise. We propose LiT‑WSAG, a 2D‑trained framework that reconstructs voxel‑wise 3D masks. Built upon SAM‑Med2D, it incorporates a wavelet‑

Lymph node (LN) assessment is an essential task in the routine radiology workflow, providing valuable insights for cancer staging and treatment planning. Identifying scatteredly-distributed and low-contrast LNs in 3D CT scans is highly challenging, even for experienced clinicians. Previous lesion and LN detection methods demonstrate the effectiveness of 2.5D approaches (i.e., using 2D backbone with multi-slice inputs), leveraging pretrained 2D model weights and showing improved accuracy as compared to separate 2D or 3D detectors. However, slice-based 2.5D detectors do not explicitly model inte

Breast cancer was the most diagnosed cancer around the world in 2020. Screening programs, based on mammography, aim to achieve early diagnosis which is of extreme importance when it comes to cancer. There are several flaws associated with mammography, with one of the most important being tissue overlapping that can result in both lesion masking and fake-lesion appearance. To overcome this, digital breast tomosynthesis takes images (slices) at different angles that are later reconstructed into a 3D image. Having in mind that the slices are planar images where tissue overlapping does not occur,

We present an algorithm for volumetric registration of 3D solid shapes. In comparison to previous work on image based registration, our technique achieves higher efficiency by leveraging a template tetrahedral mesh. In contrast to point- and surface-based registration techniques, our method better captures volumetric nature of the data, such as bone thickness. We apply our algorithm to study pathological skull deformities caused by a particular condition, i.e., craniosynostosis. The input to our system is a pair of volumetric 3D shapes: a tetrahedral mesh and a voxelized object represented by

A recently developed blind deblurring algorithm based on the edge-to-noise ratio has been applied to improve the quality of spiral CT images. Since the discrepancy measure used to quantify the edge and noise effects is not symmetric, there are several ways to formulate the edge-to-noise ratio. This article is to investigate the performance of those ratios with phantom and patient data. In the phantom study, it is shown that all the ratios share similar properties, validating the blind deblurring algorithm. The image fidelity improvement varies from 29% to 33% for different ratios, according to

Accurate recognition of early-stage pneumoconiosis presents significant challenges due to the irregular morphology, diffuse distribution, and small size of pulmonary lesions. Existing 2D methods struggle to focus on lesion-level 3D characteristics and inter-slice correlations in localized weak lesion regions, resulting in incomplete feature extraction and inaccurate calculation of lesion volume. To obtain complete 3D fine-grained lesion features in the entire lung, this paper proposes an early pneumoconiosis recognition network (EPRNet) to enhance fine-grained feature acquisition abilities and

PURPOSE: Noise power spectrum (NPS) is a commonly used performance metric to evaluate noise-reduction techniques (NRT) in imaging systems. The images reconstructed with and without an NRT can be compared via their NPS to better understand the NRT's effects on image noise. However, when comparing NPSs, simple visual assessments or a comparison of NPS peaks or medians are often used. These assessments make it difficult to objectively evaluate the effect of noise reduction across all spatial frequencies. In this work, we propose a new noise reduction profile (NRP) to facilitate a more complete an

This study's aim was to assess whether deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) techniques are non-inferior to ASIR-V for the clinical task of pulmonary nodule detection in chest computed tomography. Up to 6 (range 3-6, mean 4.2) artificial lung nodules (diameter: 3, 5, 8 mm; density: -800, -630, +100 HU) were inserted at different locations in the Kyoto Kagaku Lungman phantom. In total, 16 configurations (10 abnormal, 6 normal) were scanned at 7.6, 3, 1.6 and 0.38 mGy CTDIvol (respectively 0, 60, 80 and 95% dose reduction). Images were reconstructed using 50% ASIR-V and a deep learning-based

This paper presents a methodology for three-dimensional (3D) computer modelling of the breast, using a combination of 3D geometrical primitives and voxel matrices that can be further subjected to simulated x-ray imaging, to produce synthetic mammograms. The breast phantom is a composite model of the breast and includes the breast surface, the duct system and terminal ductal lobular units. Cooper's ligaments, the pectoral muscle, the 3D mammographic background and breast abnormalities. A second analytical x-ray matter interaction modelling module is used to generate synthetic images from monoen

Three-dimensional CT imaging of the wrist was performed in 20 patients: three with Kienböck's disease, 14 with fractures or dislocations of the carpal bones, two with dislocation of the distal radio-ulnar joint and one with an intra-articular fracture of distal radius. These images were compared with those of plain radiographs and computed tomography. With the exception of two cases of distal radio-ulnar joint dislocation and one case of hamate body fracture, three-dimensional CT imaging was helpful in detecting the displacement of the fracture and in determining the location and the direction

The diagnostic value of three-dimensional (3-D) image reconstruction in conditions affecting the craniofacial skeleton and the skull base has been assessed and the results compared with the CT scans used. Owing to reconstruction artefacts and some limitations in the exact display of 3-D images, no substantial improvement in diagnosis can be expected. Nonetheless, 3-D images facilitate the analysis and detection of complex fractures of the craniofacial skeleton and improve surgical planning and postoperative evaluation.
