BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of intractable reflux in children includes rumination syndrome, but confirming the diagnosis using antroduodenal manometry is invasive, is costly, and requires anesthesia. High-resolution esophageal manometry with impedance (HRM-MII) overcomes these limitations, and the goal of this study is to validate the use of HRM-MII as a diagnostic tool for rumination and to describe the subtypes of pediatric rumination.
METHODS: We reviewed the HRM-MII tracings of 21 children presenting with symptoms of intractable reflux in whom rumination was being considered. P

BACKGROUND: Rumination is the voluntary, albeit subconscious return of gastric contents to the mouth. Currently, rumination syndrome and repetitive belching disorders are considered separate diagnoses, as defined by Rome III criteria and high-resolution oesophageal manometry (HRM).
AIM: To test the hypothesis that these conditions represent a common behavioural response to aversive digestive stimuli and that successful treatment can be directed at both the stimulus and the response.
METHODS: Case-note review of consecutive patients with a final diagnosis of behavioural digestive disorders be

Rumination is a syndrome characterized by the effortless regurgitation of recently ingested food. It has been linked to severe medical and psychosocial conditions including malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and complete social withdrawal. Psychotherapy, the current treatment modality for rumination, may improve symptoms but requires significant motivation and is rarely curative. We hypothesized that a complete fundoplication would eliminate, or at least impair, the ability to regurgitate gastric contents through the esophagogastric junction. We performed a Nissen fundoplication in five patie

Aerophagia and rumination syndrome are functional upper gastrointestinal disorders that are becoming increasingly recognized in otherwise-healthy children and adults. Aerophagia is primarily characterized by troublesome repetitive belching and abdominal symptoms that result from air sucking and swallowing. Rumination syndrome is primarily characterized by regurgitation occurring shortly after meal intake. Physiologic studies suggest that both disorders are a result of habitual behavior with associated esophageal and gastric physiologic deviations. However, the underlying etiology of these diso

OBJECTIVES: Up to 20% of patients with refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) might have postprandial rumination. The aim of this study was to distinguish persistent GERD-related postprandial regurgitation from rumination in patients with refractory GERD undergoing ambulatory multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring.
METHODS: We first characterized 24-hour and postprandial MII-pH patterns in 28 consecutive patients with confirmed rumination syndrome (positive clinical and high-resolution manometry/impedance). We compared such MII-pH patterns with those from 30 pat

BACKGROUND: Rumination is defined as the repetitive, effortless regurgitation of recently ingested food into the mouth. These episodes are preceded by a rise in intragastric pressure (IGP) and mainly occur postprandially. IGP peaks >30 mmHg have been proposed as a cutoff to differentiate rumination from reflux events. In clinical practice, we observed that this cutoff, which does not consider esophagogastric junction (EGJ) resistance, is not always reached.
METHODS: We studied 27 patients with rumination syndrome [age: 43.6, 59% female] and 28 gastro-esophageal reflux disease patients [age: 4

OBJECTIVES: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) involve emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms; however, there is little understanding of psychological factors that contribute to these disorders. It was hypothesized that rumination, a form of depressive self-focused attention, is related to premenstrual distress.
METHOD: Study 1 involved women (N = 735) meeting criteria for No/Mild PMS, Moderate/Severe PMS, and PMDD using retrospective self-report. Study 2 involved women (N = 85) meeting diagnostic criteria for PMS or PMDD (i.e., PMD group) and healthy

BACKGROUND: Emotion Regulation (ER) and Suicide Crisis Syndrome (SCS) are psychological processes involved in suicide. Within ER, both the use of rumination and dysfunctional emotion beliefs are associated with suicide. SCS, a pre-suicidal mental state involving cognitive and affective dysregulation, is related to short-term suicide risk.
AIMS: Here, we first examined associations between ER (beliefs about the uncontrollability of emotions and rumination), SCS and suicide behavior, and second, we test a multistep model in which ER factors are linked to suicide behavior through SCS.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Dental erosion occurs after exposure to intrinsic or extrinsic acids. Exposure to intrinsic gastrointestinal acids is associated with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, or gastroesophageal reflux. Extrinsic dietary acids from foods or beverages also can cause erosion, particularly when exposure is prolonged by holding or swishing behaviors.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should screen patients exhibiting dental erosion for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Clinicians should screen patients withou

Background/Objectives: Fibromyalgia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by persistent pain. Emerging evidence highlights the role of emotional and cognitive processes in modulating pain experience. Anger, for example, can influence pain and patients' adjustment to the disease. Studies showed that metacognitions and anger rumination can worsen state anger, thereby increasing perceived pain intensity. The present study aims to investigate the presence of a relationship between pain, dysfunctional metacognitions, anger rumination, and state anger. Methods: The study included 446 participants

Rumination is a form of perserverative cognition that focuses on negative content, generally past and present, and results in emotional distress. Initial studies of rumination emerged in the psychological literature, particularly with regard to studies examining specific facets of rumination (e.g., positive vs. negative rumination, brooding vs. self-reflection, relationships with catastrophic thinking, role of impaired disengagement, state vs. trait features) as well as the presence of rumination in various psychiatric syndromes (e.g., depression, alcohol misuse, generalized anxiety disorder,

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal disorders typically present with common symptoms. The most relevant non-mucosal diseases are gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia and rumination syndrome. The literature pertaining to these 3 conditions was reviewed.
KEY MESSAGES: Gastroparesis is characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction of the stomach. The cardinal symptoms include postprandial fullness (early satiety), nausea, vomiting and bloating. The most frequently encountered causes of these symptoms are mechanical obstruction (pyloric stenosis), iatrogenic dis

Milk fat depression (MFD) syndrome represents a significant drawback to the dairy industry. The aim of this study was to unravel the ruminal metabolome-microbiome interaction in response to diet-induced MFD in dairy cows. Twelve healthy second parity Holstein dairy cows (days in milk (DIM) = 119 ± 14) were randomly assigned into control (CON, n = 6) group and treatment (TR, n = 6) group. Cows in TR group received a high-starch total mixed ration (TMR) designed to induce an MFD syndrome. Decreased milk fat yield and concentration in TR cows displayed the successful development of MFD syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is common in people who have experienced recent Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), and predicts worse medical outcomes. Mechanisms underpinning the development of depression and its association with poor medical outcomes are unclear however. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of perseverative negative thinking (e.g. worry and rumination) in predicting depression in people with recent ACS.
METHODS: Adults attending specialist inpatient and outpatient cardiology services who had recently experienced ACS were invited to participate in this observational prospecti

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Rumination syndrome is characterized by effortless recurrent regurgitation of recently ingested food into the mouth, with consequent expulsion or re-chewing and swallowing. We investigated whether rumination is under volitional control and can be reversed by behavioral treatment.
METHODS: We performed a prospective study of 28 patients who fulfilled the Rome criteria for rumination and had no organic disorders on the basis of a thorough evaluation. The diagnosis of rumination was confirmed by intestinal manometry (abdominal compression associated with regurgitation). Patien

OBJECTIVE: Skeletal dysplasias, cartilaginous or skeletal disorders that sometimes result in abnormal bone development, are seldom reported in free-ranging wild animals. Here, we use photogrammetry and comparative morphometric analyses to describe cases of abnormal appendicular skeletal proportions of free-ranging giraffe in two geographically distinct taxa: a Nubian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis) in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda and an Angolan giraffe (Giraffa giraffa angolensis) on a private farm in central Namibia.
RESULTS: These giraffe exhibited extremely shorten

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses often face patient safety incidents that can cause physical and emotional harm, even leading to s econd victim syndrome and staff shortages. Rumination-a common response after nurses suffer a patient safety event-may play a specific role between the second victim experience and turnover intention. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for supporting psychiatric nurses and retaining psychiatric nursing resources.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the associations among second victim experience, rumination, and turnover intention in psychiatric nurses and

This review investigated whether unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies, such as attentional biases, worry, rumination, and thought control, are associated with experiences of psychosis. These processes, known collectively as the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS), form a central tenet of the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model. Three research questions based on assumptions underlying the CAS were addressed. It was predicted that processes of (a) self-focused processing, (b) negative perseverative thinking (worry and rumination), and (c) counterproductive thought control would be ass

The infant rumination syndrome has not been previously reported in a neonatal intensive care setting. We recently managed three infants in our newborn intensive care unit who developed rumination following chronic courses in the unit. The events leading to this condition in each infant are described, as well as the successful treatment program that was instituted. With recognition of factors predisposing to this disorder, the problem may be avoided, providing these infants with the best chance for optimal development despite the need for prolonged intensive care.
