IR, Raman and SERS studies of methyl salicylate.

The IR and Raman spectra of methyl salicylate (MS) were recorded and analysed. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum was recorded in silver colloid. The vibrational wave numbers of the compound have been computed using the Hartree-Fock/6-31G* basis and compared with the experimental values. SERS studies suggest a flat orientation of the molecule at the metal surface.

[Tomography reconstruction of optic parameters of biological objects based on the proportional medium approximation].

Described in the paper is a reconstruction algorithm for special distributions of optical parameters of biological objects based on the non-stationary axial model of radiation transport in case of proportionality of the absorption and scattering coefficients. The proportionality coefficient, used in reconstruction, is shown to influence a precision of images being restored. The appropriate recommendations are defined of how to diminish the occurring distortions.

Evaluation of a new foetal shielding device for pregnant brain tumour patients.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to propose a new foetal shielding device for pregnant cancer patients to reduce the foetal dose associated with treatment techniques using multiple gantry angles, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). METHODS: Three shielding structures were designed to minimise the scattered and leaked radiation from various gantry angles and radiation scattering within the patient. The base-plate part that can be placed on the treatment couch was designed to reduce the scattered and leaked radiation generated at g

Laser photocoagulation for radiation retinopathy after ophthalmic plaque radiation therapy.

AIM: To evaluate the use of scatter laser photocoagulation to prevent radiation related retinopathy, maculopathy, and loss of vision. METHODS: This was an interventional case series. 66 eyes with posterior choroidal melanomas treated by ophthalmic plaque radiation therapy were reported. Of these patients, 50 were selected because they developed radiation retinopathy; 45 of these were treated with sector scatter laser photocoagulation to regress clinically evident radiation retinopathy. 16 additional patients (considered to be "high risk" to develop radiation retinopathy) were also treated. A convenient method for guarding against localized mucositis during radiation therapy.

Metal restorations, such as full gold crowns and dental implants, can cause forward and back scatter radiation during radiation therapy with a dose enhancement to adjacent tissues. Mucositis, one of the most common complications of the radiation treatment of oral, as well as other head and neck malignancies can result. A method for constructing a buccolingual guard in the clinical setting using hydroplastic material is described. The guard can be easily oriented and adapted to an existing radiation stent, adding positional stability and patient comfort. When adequate thickness of material is u

Computer simulation of forward wave propagation in soft tissue.

A method for simulating forward wavefront propagation in heterogeneous tissue is discussed. The intended application of this method is for the study of aberration produced when performing ultrasound imaging through a layer of soft tissue. A one-way wave equation that permits smooth variation in all acoustically important variables is derived. This equation also describes tissue exhibiting nonlinear elasticity and arbitrary frequency-dependent relaxation. A numerical solution to this equation is found by means of operator splitting and propagation along the spatial depth coordinate. The numeric

Mini C-Arm: Are the risks truly 'mini' to theatre practitioners?

The Mini C-Arm device is increasingly being used in orthopaedic and extremity surgeries, due to the understanding that it minimises radiation exposure and scatter radiation when compared to a conventional C-Arm. However, concerns persist when considering occupational exposure to individuals who routinely partake in procedures with this tool. Anaesthesia providers, surgeons, and scrub practitioners, in particular, are often positioned near the Mini C-Arm during these procedures and may be subject to multiple repetitive doses of radiation from a higher volume of cases. Unlike circulating staff t

Effectiveness of radiation protection systems in the cardiac catheterization laboratory: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: As numbers and complexity of percutaneous coronary interventions are constantly increasing, optimal radiation protection is required to ensure operator safety. Suspended radiation protection systems (SRPS) and protective scatter-radiation absorbing drapes (PAD) are novel methods to mitigate fluoroscopic scattered radiation exposure. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness regarding radiation protection of a SRPS and a PAD in comparison with conventional protection. METHODS: A total of 229 cardiac catheterization procedures with SRPS (N = 73), PAD (N = 82) and sta

Estimating head and neck tissue dose from x-ray scatter to physicians performing x-ray guided cardiovascular procedures: a phantom study.

Physicians performing x-ray guided interventional procedures have a keen interest in radiation safety. Radiation dose to tissues and organs of the head and neck are of particular interest because they are not routinely protected by wearable radiation safety devices. This study was conducted to facilitate estimation of radiation dose to tissues of the head and neck of interventional physicians based on the dose recorded by a personal dosimeter worn on the left collar. Scatter beam qualities maximum energy and HVL were measured for 40 scatter beams emitting from an anthropomorphic patient phanto

The optics of human skin.

An integrated review of the transfer of optical radiation into human skin is presented, aimed at developing useful models for photomedicine. The component chromophores of epidermis and stratum corneum in general determine the attenuation of radiation in these layers, moreso than does optical scattering. Epidermal thickness and melanization are important factors for UV wavelengths less than 300 nm, whereas the attenuation of UVA (320-400 nm) and visible radiation is primarily via melanin. The selective penetration of all optical wavelengths into psoriatic skin can be maximized by application of

Modeling and optimization of a multiple-ring double scattering system for proton therapy.

This study investigates proton beam scattering systems with the aim of improving beam-shaping efficiency and increasing transmission within the radiation field for low-energy beams under intensity-limited conditions. These improvements are particularly relevant for delivering radiation fields at high dose rates for ocular proton therapy (OPT) and even at ultra-high dose rates for potential FLASH radiotherapy applications. A systematic methodology was developed to design multiple-ring double-scattering systems that maximize transmission under a field-homogeneity constraint while controlling the

Dissipative Scattering of Spinning Black Holes at Fourth Post-Minkowskian Order.

We compute the radiation reacted momentum impulse Δp_{i}^{μ}, spin kick ΔS_{i}^{μ}, and scattering angle θ between two scattered spinning massive bodies (black holes or neutron stars) using the N=1 supersymmetric worldline quantum field theory formalism up to fourth post-Minkowskian (4PM) order. Our calculation confirms the state-of-the-art nonspinning results, and extends them to include spin-orbit effects. Advanced multiloop Feynman integral technology including differential equations and the method of regions are applied and extended to deal with the retarded propagators arising in a causal

[Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis of Beam Hardening and Iodine Contrast CT Values: Effects of Body Size and Tube Voltage].

PURPOSE: The quantitative accuracy of computed tomography (CT) values in contrast-enhanced CT is affected by tube voltage, body size, and scattered radiation. This study aimed to analyze the influence of these factors on CT values using Monte Carlo simulation and to clarify the usefulness of tube voltage optimization considering body size. METHODS: The Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System was used to analyze transmitted X-ray spectra at 80-140 kV in water phantoms (16-32 cm in diameter) containing contrast medium. Sinograms were generated under conditions that included both primary an

Radiation Exposure to the Brains of Interventional Radiology Staff: A Phantom Study.

Numerous papers report the occurrence of head and neck tumors in interventional radiology (IR) physicians. Recently, appropriate dosimetry and protection have become much more important. To accomplish these, first, we should accurately understand how the brain is exposed. We assessed the dose distribution of the head and clarified the relationship between head exposure and brain dose. We used eight radiophotoluminescence dosimeters (RPLDs), two at the surface of the eyes and six inside the phantom head. We conducted measurements with three kinds of irradiation fields: one irradiated the whole

Artifacts in fluoroscopy and changes in radiation dose caused by heating blankets and insulating covers during simulated endovascular treatment.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess whether insulating covers and warming systems cause artifacts in fluoroscopy, and whether they alter the radiation dose. METHODS: Eight insulating and warming systems were wrapped around the phantom in order to obtain images in fluoroscopy, and to measure the absorbed and scattered radiation dose. A dosimeter, endovascular catheters, and stents were placed into a phantom. The other dosimeter was placed outside of a C-arm table, at the operator's and anesthesiologist's locations. RESULTS: Most of the insulating covers did not cause artifacts in the fluoroscopy and

Building protection- and building shielding-factors for environmental exposure to radionuclides and monoenergetic photon emissions.

We describe a simplified method for calculating both building protection- and shielding-factors for generic one- and two-story housing-unit models that are source-term dependent. Typically, radionuclide-independent factors are applied generically to external dose coefficients to account for the radiation shielding effects of indoor residences. In reality, the shielding effectiveness of each housing-unit would change over time as the radionuclide mixture and gamma-ray energy spectrum change due to physical effects such as deposition, radioactive decay, weathering effects, and decontamination ef

Estimating radiation exposure during paediatric cardiac catheterisation: a potential for radiation reduction with air gap technique.

INTRODUCTION: The air gap technique (AGT) is an approach to radiation dose optimisation during fluoroscopy where an "air gap" is used in place of an anti-scatter grid to reduce scatter irradiation. The AGT is effective in adults but remains largely untested in children. Effects are expected to vary depending on patient size and the amount of scatter irradiation produced. METHODS: Fluoroscopy and cineangiography were performed using a Phillips Allura Fluoroscope on tissue simulation anthropomorphic phantoms representing a neonate, 5-year-old, and teenager. Monte Carlo simulations were then use

A comparison of out-of-field dose and its constituent components for intensity-modulated radiation therapy versus conformal radiation therapy: implications for carcinogenesis.

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in scatter and leakage between 6-MV intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT); to describe the relative contributions of internal patient scatter, collimator scatter, and head leakage; and to discuss implications for second cancer induction. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Dose was measured at increasing distances from the field edge in a water bath with a sloping wall (1) under full scatter conditions, (2) with the field edge abutting but outside the bath to prevent internal (water) scatter, and (3) with

The Dilution Paradox in Extracellular Vesicle Flow Cytometry.

Concentrations of extracellular vesicles (EVs) can be measured by flow cytometry, which detects fluorescence and light scattering signals from single particles. To ensure single particle detection, plasma samples are diluted based on their particle concentration, which can differ 100-fold between samples. Here we studied how sample dilution affects EV detection by flow cytometry. EVs were measured in human plasma (i) with different concentrations of spiked-in purified lipoproteins, (ii) at different dilutions, and (iii) using either scatter-triggering or fluorescence-triggering. In addition, t
