A total of 2,732 patients at the Royal Dental College, Copenhagen, were studied for occurrence of cleft uvula. The prevalence was 1.13%, and the ratio of partial to total clefts was 30:1. From a comparison with results of previous studies, it is concluded that the prevalence of cleft uvula in the Danish population appears to be in the same range as in other white populations which have been studied.

Localized pathological changes of the uvular are rare but potentially life-threatening complications after general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation. A case of postoperative swollen and elongated uvula after general anaesthesia in a prone position is presented. A mechanical trauma seems to be the most likely etiology.

BACKGROUND: A bifid uvula is an anatomic variation that can be predictive of sub-mucous cleft palate, which may cause velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Bifid uvula prevalence in the literature ranges from 0.18% to 10.3%, depending on the population studied. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of bifid uvula in the Geneva's school children population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Geneva's primary school children, from September 2014 to June 2015. An examination of the uvula was performed by dentists working for the Scholastic Dental Service, after a spec…

INTRODUCTION: Investigators have been interested in the structure and function of the uvula for centuries. Some of them emphasized its influence on the tone of voice, others its immunological role. Since the times of Hippocrates, people have been afraid of the uvula oedema, as it could lead to apnea and death. It was also suspected that upper airway diseases originated from the uvula. That's why excision of the uvula has been a common practice in folk medicine carried out as a ritual act in the North Africa and Middle East for many centuries up to now. Nowadays Evidence Based Medicine recommen…

Chronic cough is a distressing symptom for patients and parents in paediatric practice. Investigations of the child with persistent cough can be simple or complex depending on the underlying cause. There are some unusual reasons for chronic cough, which need to be kept in mind when investigating the cause. A case of a long, floppy uvula causing chronic cough through mechanical irritation of upper airway is reported.

We report two cases of Quincke's disease, an isolated form of angioneurotic edema involving the uvula that is induced by several factors, including foods, drugs, and inhalants. Although Quincke's disease has prominent oral manifestations, it has only rarely been described in the dental literature. The rapid onset and progression of the disorder, combined with the risk of respiratory compromise, may result in a serious medial emergency. Clinical manifestations include a nonerythematous swollen uvula, fullness in the throat, and signs of airway obstruction. A hereditary form of angioneurotic ede…

The association of bifid uvula with otitis media and scarred tympanic membrane was studied in White Mountain Apache Indians at Canyon Day, Arizona. Of 349 persons seen during a survey for otitis media, 13.5 percent had clinical otitis media, and 64.2 percent had scarring of the tympanic membrane of the otoscopically worse ear; 20.3 percent had bifid uvula. Bifid uvula was not associated with clinical otitis media or scarred tympanic membrane.
