Measurement and interpretation of a maxillary occlusal cant in the frontal plane.

PURPOSE: A cant of the maxillary intermolar (M1-M1) plane is a reflection of facial asymmetry and can be measured on an anterior-posterior cephalogram in degrees relative to the true horizontal or directly on the patient as the difference in millimeters between the right and left medial canthi to canine distances. The purpose of this study is to measure the correlation between the maxillary cant measured in degrees and measured in millimeters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We hypothesize that the number of degrees of maxillary cant equals the millimeter difference between the lengths of the 2 sides

Evaluation of vertical facial height reduction and severity of temporomandibular joint disorders using Shimbashi number and cephalometric analysis.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between vertical dimension at occlusion (VDO) and various grades of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) versus controls. Methods: Clinically measured Shimbashi number and radiographic cemento-enamel junction (CEJ-CEJ) measurements on 120 TMD patients and 40 controls were evaluated. Radiographic lateral cephalometric skull images of the patients were subjected to cephalometric analysis. The relationship between Shimbashi number, the cephalometric values, and its correlation with the degree of TMD were evaluated and statistically analy…

Use of dissimilar trifocals to equalize fields of view for asymmetric orbital positions secondary to progressive facial hemiatrophy.

A 58-year-old woman presented, complaining that the vertical field of view (henceforth referred to as "field") through the middle (intermediate distance) segment of her right trifocal lens was disturbingly narrower than the left. She had undergone facial surgery for Parry-Romberg syndrome, after which right enophthalmos and hypo-orbit persisted. The longer lens-to-eye distance in the enophthalmic right eye caused the 7-mm vertical dimension of the middle segment to subtend a smaller angle at the right eye than the left, producing unequal fields. Trifocals with a larger 10-mm right eye intermed…

The Dahl Concept as a Conservative Approach for Anterior Tooth Wear: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Moderate to severe localized tooth wear presents a significant clinical challenge, compromising masticatory function and aestheti … the management of moderate localized anterior tooth wear. An intentional 2 mm increase in occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) was established using fixed interim crowns on maxillary anterior teeth (13-23) in supra-occlusion, immediately resulting in the temporary posterior disclusion of the posterior teeth. This controlled interference initiates the physiological pro …

Comparison of the accuracy of different types of bite recordings - an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction of a three-dimensional jaw position determined by a bite recording is an important aspect of prosthetic therapy. … e components showed greater deviations compared to jaw positions with greater protrusion and higher vertical dimensions. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To achieve reliable model mounting with high accuracy, recordings should include the use of a frontal jig and four small recording platelets made of silicone, especially if only a slight elevation of the vertic …

Nasopharyngeal structure development in patients with cleft palate who underwent repair surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the developmental characteristics of bony nasopharyngeal (NP) in children with cleft palate (CP) and … llary point (PMP) and anterior point of the atlas (At) representing the anterior-posterior (AP) and vertical dimension of the NP. The linear dimension of the NP (i.e. Ho-At, Ho-PMP, At-PMP) and its area was also calculated. RESULTS: The bony structures of NP in the clef-affected subjects in isolated CP subgroup, had a significantly greater downward development in t …

An assessment of the usefulness of Kinesiograph as an aid in the diagnosis of TMD: a review of Manfredini et al.'s studies.

AIM: Performing a literature review of publications by Dr. Manfredini et al. related to their temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injection therapy outcome with conclusions on the clinical utility of computerized measurement devices used in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). In addition, reviewing their published opinion on an occlusion: TMD versus a biopsychosocial paradigm for TMD. Manfredini et al. authored an article published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) 2013, "An Assessment of the usefulness of jaw kinesiography in monitoring temporomandibular dis

A fully digital workflow to register maxillomandibular relation using a jaw motion tracer for fixed prosthetic rehabilitation: A technical report.

OBJECTIVE: This technique aimed to describe a fully digital workflow to register maxillomandibular relation for fixed prosthetic rehabilitation. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Mandibular kinematics could be reproduced in a four-dimensional (4D) virtual patient based on the intraoral scan, facial scan, cone beam computed tomography, and jaw motion trajectory, which helped record centric relation and determine a proper occlusal vertical dimension in a virtual environment. The therapeutic position could be exported directly to the dental computer-aided design software for digital waxing design with a …
