Dementia and visual hallucinations are common complications of Parkinson's disease (PD), yet their patho-anatomical bases are poorly defined. We studied alpha-synuclein (alphaSyn), tau and amyloid-beta (Abeta) pathology in the claustrum of 20 PD cases without dementia, 12 PD cases with dementia (PDD) and 7 cases with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). alphaSyn positivity was observed in 75% of PD cases without dementia and in 100% of PDD and DLB cases. Abeta was observed in the claustrum in 25% of PD, 58% of PDD and 100% of DLB cases. Tau was negligible in all cases restricting further analysis.

Tuberculosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Here, we show that spiroindolone, an effective treatment for plasmodia, is also active against Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites. In vitro, spiroindolone NITD609 is cidal for tachyzoites (50% inhibitory concentration [IC50], 1μM) and not toxic to human cells at ≥10μM. Two daily oral doses of 100 mg/kg of body weight reduced the parasite burden in mice by 90% (P=0.002), measured 3 days after the last dose. This inhibition of T. gondii tachyzoites in vitro and in vivo indicates that spiroindolone is a promising lead candidate for further medicine development.

Ravuconazole (RCZ) was evaluated for efficacy in comparison to fluconazole (FCZ) and itraconazole (ITZ) in murine models of disseminated histoplasmosis. All regimens tested prolonged survival (P < 0.05 to 0.0001). At equivalent doses of 50 mg/kg of body weight, RCZ and ITZ were equally effective and RCZ was more effective than FCZ (P = 0.02). Clearance of fungal burden from the livers and spleens of mice showed RCZ and ITZ at doses of 50 mg/kg to be efficacious but not curative. These data indicate that RCZ should be studied further.

A total of 1527 cases of total body cancer (TBC) presented at M G I M S between 1(st) Jan. 1992 to 30(th) April 1999. ENPLO cancers comprised 656 (42.9%)casees. Ca cervix was the commonest cancer amongst TBC comprising 15.3% cases. Ca oral cavity was the commoncest among ENPLO cancers comprising 24.3% cases followed by Ca oesophagus comprising 19.1% Ca oropharynx comprising 16.9%, Ca hypopharynx comprising 13.4%, Ca larynx comprising 11.3% and Ca Nose and PNS comprising 5.7% cases. ENPLI cancers constiuted the major burden of TBC in our hospital.
