A prospective study of 76 consecutive patients over the age of 40 years, with exudative pleural effusion, was undertaken to determine the common causes of such a clinical condition. Malignant pleural effusions were the most common in this series, found in 49 patients (64.47%), all but one being metastatic from elsewhere. Forty were secondary to a carcinoma of the bronchus, 3 from carcinoma of the breast, 1 each from carcinoma of the ovary, oesophagus, and larynx; lymphoma accounted for the remaining 2. Cefsulodin (CFS), a new antipseudomonal cephalosporin, shows a potent antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and some Gram-positive bacteria, whereas it shows low activity against many Gram-negative rods. Sixty-five abscesses, including 6 infected biliary systems and 15 sterile fluid collections, were treated by percutaneous catheter drainage in 77 febrile patients who were evaluated by computerized tomography or ultrasonography of intraabdominal infection. Experimental dermo-epidermal separation by suction was performed on primary irritant dermatitic and normal symmetrical skin areas. Primary irritant dermatitis was induced by 24-hour patch tests with an aqueous 10% benzalconium chloride solution in 12 healthy volunteers. PGE1 activity in the epidermis, dermis and blister exudate was measured by a radioimmuno assay technique. A clinical and galactographic investigation was carried out on 103 patients with hematic, serous-hematic, and serous nipple discharge. The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 72 years. This report presents a rare case of bilateral exudative retinal detachment (ERD) as an early manifestation of differentiation syndrome (DS) in a woman in her early 30s undergoing induction therapy for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide.
