Topographical patterns of lobar atrophy in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fronto-temporal dementia (FTD) designates a group of relatively common neurodegenerative disorders. The aim of this study w … ral region distinguished the language variant. AD patients, by contrast, did not differ from NC for frontal lobe volume but had smaller anterior temporal lobes (p = 0.03). Both dementia groups had medial temporal lobe atrophy of similar magnitude. A logistic regression model including 4 regional measures correctly classified 100% of subjects. CONCLUSION: FTD …

Frontal brain expansion during development using MRI and endocasts: relation to microcephaly and Homo floresiensis.

A major hall of hominid brain evolution is an expansion of the frontal lobes. To determine if a similar trajectory occurs during modern human development, the MRI scans of 118 living infants, children, and adolescents were reviewed and three specific measurements obtained: frontal width (FW), maximal cerebral width (MW), and maximal cerebral length (ML). The infantile brain is uniformly wide but relatively short, with near equal FW and MW. The juvenile brain exhibits a wider MW than FW, while FW of the adolescent brain expands to nearly equal MW, concurrent with an increase in ML. The preferen…

Occipital Monitoring of Patient State Index During Frontal Tumor Resection: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Frontal patient state index (PSI) monitoring is impractical during frontal lobe tumor resection due to surgical field interference. No validated alternative monitoring positions exist currently. This study evaluated the agreement between standard frontal and experimental occipital PSI monitoring. METHODS: A SedLine sedation monitor was used to record frontal and occipital PSI values in 16 patients who underwent frontal lobe tumor resection. PSI data were collected at 2-second intervals starting from sensor attachment to headframe fixation. Agreement was assessed using the Bland-Al…

[A case of Wegener's granulomatosis presenting with tonic-clonic status epilepticus].

A 47-year-old man with a diagnosis of paranasal Wegener's granulomatosis was admitted to our hospital for generalized seizures. He had been treated with long-term predonine therapy after the initial onset of Wegener's granulomatosis. The ictal EEG showed generalized spike and wave complexes, mainly presenting in the bifrontal areas. The postictal EEG revealed periodic localized sharp discharges in the left frontal area. At the initial seizure onset, a midline multilobular mass lesion having a heterogeneous enhancement effect was detected in the lower frontal lobe on gadolinium-enhanced T1-weig…

Localizing value of verbal automatisms, vocal automatisms, singing, and humming: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a systematic review of the localizing and lateralizing value of verbal automatisms, vocal automatisms, ictal singing … s and case series were included in this review. Vocal automatisms were significantly more common in frontal lobe epilepsy (summary proportion = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.36-0.47) compared to temporal lobe epilepsy (0.30, 95% CI = 0.22-0.37; p = 0.019). A non-significant trend toward a higher likelihood of vocal automatisms in left versus right-sided epilepsy was observ …

The Frontal Aslant Tract and Supplementary Motor Area Syndrome: Moving towards a Connectomic Initiation Axis.

Connectomics is the use of big data to map the brain's neural infrastructure; employing such technology to improve surgical planning may improve neuro-oncological outcomes. Supplementary motor area (SMA) syndrome is a well-known complication of medial frontal lobe surgery. The 'localizationist' view posits that damage to the posteromedial bank of the superior frontal gyrus (SFG) is the basis of SMA syndrome. However, surgical experience within the frontal lobe suggests that this is not entirely true. In a study on n = 45 patients undergoing frontal lobe glioma surgery, we sought to determine i…

Epileptic motor behaviors during sleep: anatomo-electro-clinical features.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related complex motor seizures have long been considered pathognomonic features of Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (NFLE). In recent years, these manifestations have also been reported to have a temporal or insular origin. METHOD: We describe 40 drug-resistant epileptic patients with complex motor seizures during sleep, submitted to presurgical stereo-EEG (SEEG) evaluation and seizure-free after surgical resection of the epileptogenic zone. RESULTS: In a significant proportion (30%) of these patients, seizures arose from extra-frontal regions, including mainly the temporal …

[Speech and thought disorder in frontal syndrome following subarachnoid hemorrhage].

Here is described a case of a patient suffering from cerebral hemorrhage resulting in the perforation of the third cerebral ventricle and massive damage of the frontal lobes in consequence of the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm. After neurosurgical operation the patient's general state improved, but in spite of this he displayed symptoms of the frontal syndrome with many symptoms in the area of abstractional thinking and reflectiveness and a significant reduction of higher emotionality. Very interesting in this case is the neurolinguistic symptomatology. The rehabilitation and pharmacother…

Phase synchronization alterations of EEG oscillations during emotional video processing in depression and anxiety: a transdiagnostic study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates overlapping neurobiological variations across transdiagnostic psychiatric disorders. Considering depression and anxiety as the most common and co-occurring symptoms in affective disorders, we hypothesize shared symptom-related electrophysiological aberrations in the neural rhythmic oscillations across diagnostic boundaries. METHODS: 53 treatment-naïve patients with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or depressive episode in bipolar disorder, and 83 healthy controls (HC), underwent 64-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recording

Memory and executive function in older adults: relationships with temporal and prefrontal gray matter volumes and white matter hyperintensities.

Forty-eight healthy adults aged 65-85 were recruited for structural magnetic resonance scans after an extensive neuropsychological battery that ensured a high degree of variability across the sample in performance on long-term memory tests, and on tests traditionally thought to rely on prefrontal cortex. Gray matter volumes were measured for three gyri in the frontal lobe (superior, middle, inferior), six gyri in the temporal lobe (superior, middle, inferior, fusiform, parahippocampal, and hippocampus), and the occipital lobe. Gray matter volumes declined across the age range evaluated, but wi…

Marked increase in mitochondrial DNA deletion levels in the cerebral cortex of Huntington's disease patients.

To determine if somatic mtDNA mutations might contribute to the neurodegeneration observed in Huntington's disease (HD), we quantitated the amount of the common mitochondrial 4977 nucleotide pair deletion (mtDNA4977) in cortex and putamen of HD patients and age-matched controls by the serial dilution-polymerase chain reaction method. Cortical deletion levels were analyzed in the temporal, frontal, and occipital lobes. HD temporal lobes had an 11-fold greater mean mtDNA4977 deletion level than age-matched controls, and HD frontal lobes had fivefold greater levels. HD occipital lobe and putamen …

Funny or Angry? Neural Correlates of Individual Differences in Aggressive Humor Processing.

Humor has been a hot topic for social cognition in recent years. The present study focused on the social attribute of humor and showed different stories to participants, which were divided into four types according to the model of humor style, to explore the underlying neural mechanism of point-to-self aggressive humor and how individual differences modulated it. Measuring the degree of anger and funniness, results suggested that aggressive humor helped us in social communication by reducing the degree of anger. The neural activities showed that bilateral temporal lobes and frontal lobes playe…

Abnormal imitation-related cortical activation sequences in Asperger's syndrome.

Subjects with Asperger's syndrome (AS) are impaired in social interaction and imitation, but the underlying brain mechanisms are poorly unde … ccipital cortex to the superior temporal sulcus, to the inferior parietal lobe, and to the inferior frontal lobe, and finally, 75 to 90 milliseconds later, to the primary motor cortex of both hemispheres. Monobloc and bipartition in craniofacial surgery.

BACKGROUND: The frontofacial monobloc advancement with osteogenic distraction is increasingly used as a surgical treatment for children with complex craniosynostosis-associated syndromes. However, the subfrontal osteotomy cuts to free the facial skeleton from the skull base require extradural retraction of the frontal lobes. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and degree of radiologically identifiable frontal lobe changes and whether any such changes affected the patients' outcome. METHODS: The clinical records and preoperative and postoperative computed tomography imagin…

Cerebral cortex Functional Networks of Transdermal Electrical Stimulation at Daling (PC7) Acupoint.

The cerebral cortex functional network of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals during transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on 21 healthy subjects was constructed by using three modules: standard low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA), phase-locking value (PLV), and complex network. We investigated the brain functional network triggered by PC7 stimulation by comparing with resting state and non-acupoint stimulation. The results showed that the PC7 stimulation mainly activated frontal lobe and temporal lobe including prefrontal cortex (BA10), insular lobe (BA13)…

Distribution of cerebral cortical lesions in corticobasal degeneration: a clinicopathological study of five autopsy cases in Japan.

We investigated five Japanese patients with autopsy-proven corticobasal degeneration (CBD) both clinically and pathologically, and examined the distribution of their cerebral cortical lesions in hemisphere specimens. The lesions were classified into three categories (slight, moderate and severe). Only two of our patients had clinical features considered to be typical of CBD. Severe lesions were present in the posterior portions of the frontal lobe, anterior to the precentral gyrus in two patients with the clinical diagnosis of CBD. By comparison, in two patients with clinically diagnosed front…
