Air and Bone-Conduction Masseteric Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials: A Simulated Conductive Hearing Loss Study.

INTRODUCTION: Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials assess saccular-masseteric pathway function using air-conducted or bone-conducted stimuli. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether simulated bilateral conductive hearing loss differentially affects mVEMP response characteristics under air- and bone-conducted stimulation in young adults. METHODS: Fifty healthy participants were included in the study. Conductive hearing loss was simulated in 25 individuals using silicone-blocked foam ear tips to create controlled bilateral attenuation. Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic poten

Verification of EasyGain Settings in the Roger Remote Microphone System.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the EasyGain settings on a wireless receiver used with a remote microphone (RM) affected output as a function of hearing loss and receiver type. METHOD: To assess the effects of the EasyGain setting on a Roger receiver, a Phonak Naida V90 superpower hearing aid (HA), two universal Roger X (02) receivers, two Roger 18 integrated receivers, and a Roger Inspiro transmitter were used. An electroacoustic evaluation was performed for five degrees of hearing loss ranging from a flat 40 to 80 dB HL, and for nine EasyGain settings from +8 to -8 dB

Ciliopathy: Usher Syndrome.

Ciliopathies are a group of disorders caused by a defect in ciliogenesis, ciliary protein trafficking. Because nearly every cell in the body (including the photoreceptors) contains cilia, defects in ciliary proteins typically affect multiple organ systems. Usher syndrome is the most common syndromic cause of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and accounts for 10-20% of cases of RP Inheritance is autosomal recessive, and the retinal dystrophy is usually rod-cone dystrophy (Figs. 32.1 and 32.2). These patients have RP with sensorineural hearing loss (partial or complete) since birth; some may have vestib

Cochlear implants in single-sided deaf recipients: Near normal higher-order processing.

OBJECTIVE: Single-sided deafness (SSD) is a condition where an individual has a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing on the contralateral side. The use of cochlear implants in individuals with SSD leads to functional improvements in hearing. However, it is relatively unclear how sounds incoming via the cochlear implant (independent of the hearing ear) are processed and interpreted by higher-order processes in the brain. METHODS: Scalp electroencephalography and auditory event-related potentials were recorded monaurally from nine experienced single sided

The fundamental and medical impacts of recent progress in research on hereditary hearing loss.

What would define real progress in the field of deafness research in fundamental and medical terms? In fundamental terms, progress would be measured by an improvement in our knowledge of the development and physiology of the ear. In medical terms, progress would lead to the division of the broad category of hearing defects into distinct clinical entities or subclasses, the collection of epidemiological data, the creation of molecular diagnostic tests, the improvement of genetic counselling services and the development of new therapeutics. In this review, we will introduce some general consider

Improvement in hearing loss over time in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) are reported to have conductive (CHL) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), but there is little information pertaining to the progression of hearing loss over time. The goal of this study was to examine the prevalence of CHL and SNHL in adults and children with CdLS and look for changes in SNHL over time. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with CdLS presenting to a CdLS clinic was conducted. Also, a written survey of clinical concerns was collected from additional patients/families seen in the clinic and through the Cor

Obsessive-compulsive disorder presenting with musical obsessions in otosclerosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Musical obsessions consist of intrusive recollections of music fragments that are experienced as unwanted. Otosclerosis is caused by an abnormal bone homeostasis of the otic capsule and represents a frequent cause of hearing impairment. Many conditions causing hearing loss have been associated with musical hallucinations, but the association between musical obsessions and hearing loss is frequently overlooked. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 51-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder who developed musical obsessions soon after being d

No dramatic age-related loss of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons in Bcl-2 over-expression mice or Bax null mice.

Age-related decline of neuronal function is associated with age-related structural changes. In the central nervous system, age-related decline of cognitive performance is thought to be caused by synaptic loss instead of neuronal loss. However, in the cochlea, age-related loss of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) is consistently observed in a variety of species, including humans. Since age-related loss of these cells is a major contributing factor to presbycusis, it is important to study possible molecular mechanisms underlying this age-related cell death. Previous studies suggested

CHARGE syndrome in a child with a CHD7 variant and a novel pathogenic SOX2 variant: A case report.

CHARGE syndrome is a clinically heterogeneous condition that typically presents with a loss-of-function mutation in CHD7. SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome is a rare condition associated with hypogonadism and hearing loss. Herein, we describe the case of a Japanese boy presenting with a micropenis, bilateral cryptorchidism, cupped ear, right facial nerve palsy, and bilateral hearing loss, clinically meeting the diagnostic criteria for CHARGE syndrome, but with optic nerve hypoplasia, which is atypical for the syndrome. Therefore, a genetic analysis (next-generation sequencing) was performed. In addit

Medical aspects of ageing in a population with intellectual disability: II. Hearing impairment.

Hearing function of an institutionalized population with intellectual disability, consisting of 70 subjects with a mean age of 70.1 (range 60-92) years at initial evaluation, was assessed during a 10-year longitudinal study. One subject had Down's syndrome and could not be assessed as a result of dementia. The total prevalence of mild to severe hearing loss (33.3% in the 60-70 age group and 70.4% in those over age 70) was comparable to reported data from an ageing population without intellectual disability in the United Kingdom (37%, respectively 60%). However, the proportion of moderate to se

Hearing loss rather than vestibular loss identifies patient subgroups with different outcomes in Meniere's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between Meniere's disease (MD) duration and both hearing thresholds and vestibular dysfunction. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. First, the relationships between MD duration and pure-tone audiometry thresholds for each frequency, the canal paresis (CP) ratio, and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain were analysed. Second, clinical characteristics, CP values, and VOR gains were compared between patient groups with low and high hearing thresholds to determine whether they exhibited different clinical presentations. STUDY SAMPLE: The stud

Patients' perceived outcomes after stapedectomy for otosclerosis.

We conducted a retrospective study of 29 patients who had undergone stapedectomy for otosclerosis to determine how well their subjective perceptions of hearing improvement correlated with objective audiometric measurements. Patients expressed their assessments of hearing function by completing two versions of the Hearing Disability and Handicap Scale (HDHS). One version of the HDHS was based on patients' retrospective recollections of their hearing impairment prior to surgery, and the other reflected their assessment of their current function. We evaluated these HDHS data both separately and i

The use of a small fenestra technique with the Fisch piston in the surgical treatment of otosclerosis.

The modern surgical treatment of otosclerosis consists of replacement of the sound conducting function of the stapes by a prosthesis. The results obtained in 100 consecutive patients using the small fenestra technique and a 0.4 mm. Teflon and steel wire prosthesis are reported. The surgical technique is described. The hearing was improved in all patients. In 92 per cent of the patients an optimal hearing gain was found after an observation time of 1 to 4 years. Five patients required re-operation during the observation time. The small fenestra technique and the Fisch prosthesis were considered
